Im turning 55 this year man what a childhood the 1970s were great. By this time, i was already a diehard Oakland Raiders fan. Oh, how i miss those days, and the football was awesome 💪
I'm 51 and this was really the first year that I understood what I was watching and really got in to the games. Huge Cowboys fan, cried when they lost to the Rams in the playoffs. This was a great weekend of football at a great time. Thanks for all the work putting this together. Really good work.
The games of the 70's between Dallas/ Washington were legendary....Just like Steelers/ Raiders in the AFC.... This game between Dallas/ Washington was a fantastic game...Down to the wire with at least 8 HOF on sideline and field..
I'm a year younger and this was also the first year I actually watched and followed the NFL. I'll never forget this season and watching the Super Bowl w/ Rams and Steelers.
The thing I loved about these days was the distinct voices. You'd hear and automatically know the announcer: Curt Gowdy, Don Criqui, Frank Glieber, Pat Summerall, Vin Scully, Merle Harmon (as well as Lindsey Nelson who's not on here). These guys today; with a few exceptions, they all sound alike.
Very underrated point, a lot of copycats and Syracuse alums doing PBP nowadays. For better or worse, those names you mentioned all were distinctive men and voices, also helps they mostly smoked like chimneys and drunk like sailors on a weekend pass. Which helped makes their voices so distinct.

Been a Steeler Fan since 1968, Was in the Military during this time. This was the last Super Bowl the Steelers would win Vs the Rams in January of 80, Not until 2006 would we win another. Great Memories.
What a great day of football! Loved watching my Cowboys win what is probably the greatest regular season comeback win in team, or possibly NFL, history. I didn’t see it live as I grew up in the Houston area, and we had the Oilers-Eagles game. Bittersweet knowing we lose in 2 weeks to the Rams, especially watching how badly they played against the Saints (and we had beat them earlier that year too). It should have been another Cowboys-Steelers Super Bowl rematch, or better yet, Cowboys-Oilers - Renfro caught that TD pass.
We were at Texas Stadium that afternoon. I was super anxious for the game Monday night being a Charger Backer. Early on, we were waiting for an update on whether the Bucs held on the beat the Chiefs and head to the playoffs. I also had one eye on the Oilers game. Almost did not go as neither team ment anything to me. Glad I did as it turned out to be one of the Best Pro Football games I have ever attended. That do or die matchup had everything you could ever want to witness in a game and more. I still wish that Mosely had gotten a chance to kick on the last play just to wring another drop of suspense out of this game. He would have never hit it, but it sure would have been fun to watch the Cowboys fans squirm just a little more.
Very cool backstory. I live in NYC and CBS aired the Redskins vs Cowboys game that day. It remains my favorite all-time regular season Cowboys game. #2 Cowboys Vs Giants 1993 finale Emmitt Smith game
The Vikings-Patriots game was the last of Jim Marshall’s 20-year career. He had been with Minnesota since its inception in 1961. He retired having played in 282 consecutive games.
Never knew Jim Mora, Sr. was an assistant with Seattle until seeing him shake Jack Patera's hand at the end of the Seahawks win at Oakland. Learn something new all the time.....
I had been visiting my grandparents in suburban Chicago that weekend. As was usually the case, we had arrived on Thursday and planned to drive back to Michigan on Sunday. The expressways in Chicago were slick from snow and ice that Sunday, but we drove back anyway because my mom had a graduate school class on Monday that she had to attend. We saw a multi car accident on the Dan Ryan Expressway in the general area where one would get off to go to Soldier Field. There were a number of other accidents the rest of the way home, but we stopped counting after we slid off the road.
The 1979 Bucs rain game and the 1982 Patriots snow plow game are the closest that the NFL has gotten to 0-0 ties in the modern era. 2007 Dolphins-Steelers was closer but the Steelers were due to score if the game had gone to overtime if they didn’t win it in regulation.
@@danyluk1 Thank you. Did not know that was a song! I have never been much on music. But NBC used that for openings of sports and so did CBS! Love looking at the old highlights! Back then you had to watch all the games to know what was going on in the rest of the NFL!
Raiders really blew a great shot at making the postseason in '79. They could've been the fly in the ointment with the teams that were in. Owned Pittsburgh from 1976-1983 and definitely wouldn't have been intimidated by them whatsoever.
@Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot I don't think the Raiders beat Pittsburgh in 79, but they would have given them a better game than Miami did, and they would have played the Oilers tougher than Denver did. The 79 Broncos had no offense.
@@chrisuncleahmad789 It depends. If the Broncos would have won the next night (on MNF against the Chargers), the Raiders would have been eliminated, and the Chargers would have went to Houston (both would have been 11-5, and Houston would have had the better conference record). In reality, though, the Chargers won, and the 10-6 Raiders (who swept the Broncos that year) would have went to Houston for the WC game.
@@chrisuncleahmad789 I thought Raiders would've beaten Seattle that weekend. Never happened. Seattle matched up well and swept the Raiders in 1978, 1979 & even in 1983. Raiders beat them however when it mattered most in 1983 AFC championship game.
As a Bears fan in Chicago in 1979 we needed to wait on the Washington/Dallas to see if the Bears got into the Wildcard game. The game was not televised in Chicago so we needed to hear updates on news radio on the Dallas comeback putting the Bears into the playoffs, old times
Crazy what we did for football. I spent many a Sunday trying to keep track of score as we only got an early Noon cst game and the Pokes at 1cst. No late game. I was always tuned in a 6pm to Disney on NBC or 60 on CBS on those weeks praying the late 3pm cst game ran long and we got bonus coverage. KOA IN Denver saved me when the Broncos played late after Daylight savings fell back the second half of the season too. Another treat when we went to Cowboys and Oilers games and they were early, my Dad often let us stay after to watch the late games from the Stadium. They had satellite feeds of the late games normally.
As a result of Tampa Bay’s win, the only way the Bears could make the playoffs was if they beat St. Louis by at least 34 points and have Washington lose at Dallas. That’s exactly what happened as the Bears won 42-6, while the Redskins squandered a 34-21 advantage late in the fourth quarter to lose to the Cowboys 35-34.
Before I begin, how has this been edited together? 12 hrs is a commitment, and there were only 14 games per Sunday in 1979, is there an hr dedicated to each game, interspersed with studio shows ie....NFL Today? Just trying to figure out how to best consume this. Thank you.
