All these ignorant people here calling out on the actors dance performance and ada, making comparison to Umrao Jaan films from Bollywood probably don’t know that this drama is the most or rather absolutely authentic screen adaptation of the novel, this geo tv drama is excellently done with even original poetry from the novel. This is “mujra” where the dancer is also the singer , people pointing out on her foot work and all, how is one supposed to recite a ghazal with high energy latka and jhatka? Rekha’s dance may be more appealing but definitely not period appropriate, it’s replete with bollywood style, the story too was significantly altered with a bollywood twist, making it a one dimensional love story , but given the time limitation on a film it is understandable. And Aishwarya’s Umrao Jaan was the absolute worst with horrendous manipulation of the story and annihilations of the characters. Ruswa must have turned in his grave !
One fact people ignore is that it was the first drama of Geo as a private channel. They did it very carefully because state-owned PTV has a strict policy on showing dance.

sir if you will see this drama, rekha performance will not be liked by your soul, in this all character are soul touching and seems true, rekha picture & rekha looks like commericial hide reality
Great lyrics; Rekha or Madhuri would have done it wayy better I guess becoz a song this type demands agile footwork and Indian classical dance excellence but we should not overlook this actress's honest efforts, she deserves due appreciation for trying out. Rekha's Umrao Jaan is still the most authentic and my favourite of all.👍
This is mujra ,not pure classical nritya of some kind. Umrao here is not just a dancer but a poet and singer as well. By the way Rekha’s Umrao Jaan was not an authentic adaptation, in fact it was significantly altered. This drama is the most authentic of all. You should watch this, will forget those bollywood films!

The Pakistani umrao jaan movie was actually totally different from the original novel and Rani’s role was horrible , a sobbing woman , melodramatic, and the authentic urdu you’re talking about was definitely not period appropriate, people in 19th century Awadh did not talk like that!! Also that movie as a whole is an eye sore! Cheap Cardboard sets with card board actors! This drama is the best adaptation of the novel till date, 1981 movie by Muzaffar Ali comes second, although the language was more appropriate in the latter.
Their versions were the most unrealistic. In those times the dancers would also recite the poetry/ghazals themselves whilst dancing. Also The origional 1st Umrao Jaan Ada movie actually came out if Pakistan in in 1972.
