We kayaker Caladesi in 2015. We rented a tandem kayak. We did the mangroves and was pushing away from some of the brush and a million tiny black crabs were in the trees. My husband sitting behind me jumping and made me feel like we would tip over. Needless to say I think that's the fastest I ever paddled and I now just go solo in my own kayak instead of a tandem. 🤣 Great video!
Your video brought back some great memories. In 1964, while fishing in Hurricane Pass between Caladesi and Honeymoon islands, I hooked and fought for 30 minutes an estimated 20 foot Tiger Shark. It finally broke the line. Quite thrilling considering we were in a 14 foot boat at the time. It would have been a worlds record for Tiger Sharks if we had landed it.
That’s quite a story Jim, thank you for sharing! Safe paddling out there, and be safe out there when you’re fishing as well!
I lived on Marathon Key for a few years...I also did jet skis thru as well as kayaks...IDELING the jet skis only. :). AMAZING!
jspd1jack meu bem Thanks for the comments! Have a great weekend and safe paddling out there!
Those views! My God, amazing
To funny, I grew up there too. But never took a Kayak through the mangroves. Thanks for showing me the route. Going back to visit this summer.
Robert Mueller Thanks for The comments Robert! Have fun and paddle safely!
Lovely paddle! I looked for I Lived in Paradise at my local library but they don’t have it, so I’ll look for it from a book store. Thanks for the recommendation, I love Florida history.
I really enjoyed that book, hopefully you can find it somewhere!
Very good documentary and explanation
Thanks for watching! Have a great day!
Nice! Next time I’m in Florida I’m doing it!
Cool video. My wife and I will have to kayak Caladesi the next time we're camping at Fort DeSoto.
Thank you James! You’ll love it! Safe paddling out there!
Hello thank you for your video. Its amazing!! Very detailed and well explained. I've been waiting to do this Kayak tour for a while and didnt know how. I'l ldefintely do it this weekedn
Thanks Luciana! Enjoy your trip and safe paddling!
How would a SeaEagle 393RL perform for that paddle trip? I just received a 393RL and a 300X this week, and am going to be unboxing and paddling them on a local river this weekend.
Hi 👋 there, Michael! Yes, absolutely! The 393 RL is perfect for extended touring like paddling out to Caladesi and through the mangroves and back would be. I have done 18 mile days in that boat. If I had it back when I shot that video, I would’ve used it there as well. Hope you have a great weekend out there!
@@KayakCliff Thank you, Cliff. I’m in Kentucky, but want to make that paddle and others when I visit family in the Tampa area.
Great video. What are you using to edit your videos? The animated flag pins are cool! Mind sharing some technical specs?
Thank you for your videos, I enjoy them. I see you have a jackson journey. I have an old touring kayak I bought used to make sure I like kayaking. Well, I do and I want to upgrade. I’ve been thinking about buying the Journey. Also have looked at the tsunami 145. I know you think both are good boats from your video. Could you give me your opinion on the journey vs tsunami? I want it to be comfortable and fast. I like doing camping kayak trips and exploration. No interest in fishing.
Happy Hartshornes Hi, that’s a great question; thanks for asking! I’m glad that you got a kayak and really enjoy kayaking!
Both the tsunami 145 and the Jackson journey 140 are wonderful kayaks. Here’s why I prefer the Jackson Journey: It’s a more “playful” boat. What I mean by that is when you do not have the rudder in the water, it turns very easily without much effort at all. It also “edges” excellently. Edging is when you lean to the right, it will turn to the left and vice versa the other way. This is a nice feature to have in your boat. I would only recommend the Journey with the rudder option though. When you have heavy cross currents or heavy crosswinds, it will track much better. Because of the “rocker” that they have built into the hull, which makes it more playful, it also blows off course in heavy wind if you don’t have a rudder.
Now, the Tsunami has a nice v-cut into the hull, and it extends down the whole length of the hull. Whereas the Journey has a v in the front, but it is a more rounded hull.
The Tsunami will track well in all conditions because of their v, but will not be as playful in turning or edging as the Journey.
In making a purchase last this, I encourage you to try out both boats to make the best decision. Most stores will let you try them out first.
Good luck and safe paddling!
Kayak Cliff thank you! I have an old Aquaterra Chinook with a rudder that is 16 feet. I really needed the rudder in the Gulf of Mexico. I have taken it down rivers too and it was quite difficult to turn. I think the journey sounds like what I’m looking for. Thank you for your input.
Happy Hartshornes - When I bought the Jackson Journey (I have two of them now) I didn’t expect the playfulness in the boat. It tracks straight when paddling, but maneuvers on a dime. I quickly came to appreciate this feature! You definitely need the rudder with this boat! I do not normally use the rudder, but if I have strong cross currents or a strong crosswind - I really like to have it! Have fun and safe paddling!
Kayak Cliff, you have to use Bluetooth for safety. Love the video though.
Thanks Brett! Safe paddles & travels out there!
How does it take to kayak from the landing at Clearwater to the Marina in Caladesi, approximately?
That is a further distance from Clearwater Beach ramp to Caladesi Island marina. I would say 6 miles each way. It would be a very nice paddle though! You could paddle up there along the bay side, then navigate back through the mangrove trails! Safe paddling and enjoy!!!
Hey kayak cliff have you kayaked Sanibel island,,pine island area
Hey there! No, I have not kayaked down there yet, but I did boat down there as a kid. Beautiful area!!!
how's the kayaking in the reddington beach/Indian rocks beach area
Hi Lee - I have never kayaked down in that area, but I plan too! Check it out and let me know what trails would be worthy of filming a video for. Thanks a lot and safe paddling!
Kayak Cliff next time I'm in Florida I will. I'm here in the dallas area and loved your Denton creek video.
Not concerned about sharks or alligators?
No, if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. They are more scared of you than you are of them. Safe paddling out there and thanks for the comments!
