This is a ticking stick. This is multiple sticks glued for reference instead of a single stick outlined to reconstruct the reference. There will be specific use cases where this is faster and other cases where outlining will be faster, but they are the same core method.
It seems to me using a piece of cardboard or craft paper just a bit smaller than the finished piece, but laying it on the same substrate might improve the accuracy. And by just outlining a single stick instead of gluing multiple ones down you would also save some time.
