Thank you so much for this information and I work in waste and this helped me figured out why my customers waste wasn’t solidifying. It was because they didn’t have enough CaO. They were using the wrong Fly Ash!
Thanks! You really are a help in my life and very inspiring. I don’t want to just be a great concrete finisher or builder, but I want to know why, and how I can improve the properties of my concrete to make a better product with higher service life for customers. So you definitely give me a lot to ponder and Im going to research more. Class f fly ash and silica fume seem like something that I could incorporate in small amounts. Thanks tyler!
An excellent breakdown of the SCMs, thank you! Today Lehigh Cement priced slag and fly ash on par with OPC. A mild Winter etc lowered fly ash supply, and their west coast slag now comes out of Japan. They said the increased demand can all be traced back to this video!

I'm not so much a concrete lover. As much as just intrigued by your enthusiasm on the subject. Also it seems pretty practical knowledge to have in my pocket...assuming I actually retain some of this
Hello Tyler, I think discovering this channel is the best thing that happened to me!! I usually read articles, never tried to use youtube for such things. First time and I'm already this filled with great data for a verry short time!! Thanks for this fantastic video ! Keep up the great work my friend.
I don't know how effective it is to comment on old posts, but I would also heartily agree with the request for more of Tyler's thoughts on Metakaolin. We are an independent ready-mix company and have been using Metakaolin as a standard third powder ingredient (10% of cementitous) in all of our concrete mixes for three years now. I think we would have seriously upset contractors and owners if we suddenly stopped using it. As far as I am aware, we are the only ready-mix company using MK to this extent.
@@fredfunk1017 we started with metakaolin for our zero slump mix, then figured out how to avoid needing it (even though we like it - trying to make that mix as normal as possible). The remainder we now use with hydrated lime plaster and really like that combo for a finish coat. It strengthens the lime considerably.
Thank you for your thorough analysis. I have a question. You indicated that under alkali silica reaction, that pH goes down whereas formation of Ca(OH)2 helps raise the pH into alkaline range not, as you said, down which is the acid range. Please advise if you meant to say it increases instead of decreases pH. Also, since this process remains to be a chemical reaction, the ultimate product depends on the stoicheometric admixture of its ingredients. Mass action law, if ignored, could affect the degree to which this chemical reaction moves to the right(the product formation.) Therefore, particle size and the time of hydration could be a valid determinant of the strength of the final product. I await your comments.
Hello Tyler Could you give me your opinion on fumed silica (pyrogenic silica) as an admixture for concrete in comparison to silica fume (if there is any difference).
I don't mean to criticize, but when using abbreviations, itcwould help to say, at least once, what thry mean. What is SCM? IS OPC "ONLY PORTLAND CEMENT"? I am an uneducated construction worker and firefighter. Trying to learn.
SCM means supplementary cementitious material OPC means original portland cement I know the abbreviations can seem weird but this is what is used in the industry. I will try and do better next time. Thank you for the comment!!!
Could different SCMs be combined? With Silica Fume only being 5%, seems you could combine with fly ash F for superior strength and chemical protection.
HI Tyler, could you help me to clarify why FA-C type have similar reactivity as OPC? base on the information of triangle (SIO2, CaO, Al2O3) they only have pozzolan reactivity. thanks
I want to make a dome home in a tropical, third world location that is resistant to earthquakes and typhoons. Can anyone make a recommendation for mixtures ? I may wish to pump/spray it on to a form and re-enforce it with basalt rope. Thank you.
I have been wondering about this for years. No one knows about it realy, they just say they don't like the mud. Setting block its always the motar joint that fails in a storm. Its always hot in florida and monopours do crack a couple of days later but not often. and there's the plastic sawdust stuff too. Thanks for spelling it all out. Roof shingle mud gets brittle after 20 years and then the winds come, doctor some up and sell it to concerned new home owners. Roofers just dont want to mix another batch. Hahha
where do I buy silica fume ? The person selling me cement never heard of what you are talking about... Can you show me how to use silica fume? Is silica fume a type of gas? From google, it looks like a powder... Please be clear. I've no idea what you talking about, and I want to understand you!
There is an amazing software called B4Cast www.b4cast.com/ You imput all the mechanical and thermal properties of concrete, type of formwork, enviroment temperature, structure dimensions, etc, etc....and it can compute the specific areas and time where your concrete will exceed its tension strength...therefore cracking. There is a free trial...but if you really want it.... software is expensive.
Thanks again Tyler!! I rattle off a few facts from this video and now everyone thinks I'm some kind of concrete wizard around the office.

I am encouraging Tyler to add metakaolin to his chart. Tyler, your videos are extremely helpful, but even more so with metakaolin included.
What is metakaolin?
Thank you, Mr. Tyler. Your presentations are always worth watching. Have a great day. 🌻
Sir.. I am glad that I finally found ur channel to learn more about basic .. no words to explain .m

also this topic puts me to sleep if I happened to need that at the time. and as a backup, you remind me of Saul Goodman, so there's that

:)
Thanks Tyler ..... what are your thoughts on Metakaolin
Love your videos!
How does sodium bentonite work as an SCM?
Hi Tyler, I liked a lot your presentation and I'd like to ask you about Metakaolin, how it modifies these properties?

metakaolin is super easy to make too
Is it ok to use Fly Ash F and Slag together. So 50% OPC, 25% Fly Ash F and 25% Slag or will that dilute the mixture too much?

Great info! Any thoughts on mix design for extruded 3D printed cement? That's my area.
YES! We are making a lot of good progress in that work. Check out my instagram at concrete.tyler for some updates.
