  • Good old Bracknell! Did you know that Bracknell was a 'hub town' and was an alternative to living in London? In the 50s/60s it was a new town with brand new facilities, shops, play areas, easy access into London via rail, etc. This was the place to be!
My mother and father originally lived in Bracknell and my grandparents lived there until 2012 -- I know it well.
Nowadays a complete overhaul of the 1960s town centre is long overdue - and it's already started (Dec2013) but I'm going to miss the old Bracknell. WHY?? I have so many memories of Bracknell and walking around takes me back to my childhood as the town centre has not changed much in 30 years.
This is my last opportunity to do my last tour of the lifts that I once knew before these are pulled down in the major 750 billion town centre refurbishment.
    Why the LIFT tour?
This has been an interest of mine since I was small. My Nan lived in Bracknell and she was the only one in my family to entertain my interest in lifts. She used to take me to see all the lifts in the town centre -- Bentalls, car park 1, car park 2, up until car park 5 (now derelict but still there! -- see different video). I remember all these lifts from when I was small, some are fairly original, some are derelict and as you'll see in the videos, most are modernised -- NOT GOOD FOR ME!
We start with the noisy escalators in Charles Square. Not much has changed with these since the 70s/80s. They are still very clunky and old.
The fountain in Charles Square is a clock - every 5 minutes it's supposed to tell the time, then go back into a random formation afterwards. Not sure if many people can tell the 'random' and the 'telling the time' formation apart!

Good video. Found a few similar ones in Finland, just as rattly!
Keep up the good work, your lift videos are so interesting and detailed. So nice that these old lift machine systems are being documented before they unfortunately disappear.

I used to ride these in the late 90s-early 00s... I worked at the Met Office and used to dig these!
The charity shops often had sudden surges of really good vinyl and CDs as well.
    Great days!

A previous company I worked for did the CCTV in the old met office. I remember the lifts there - there were 4 lifts. 2 on one side, facing the 2 on the other side. Express lifts with the usual white-up, red-down lanterns and arrival bell! The guy in charge of security was an old bloke who was not easy to get on with. Hated going there.

It didn't matter if the clock fountain was right or wrong, because nobody knew how to tell the time from it. But it's gone now, along with all the escalators, Charles Square itself, and three-quarters of the town, which is being rebuilt. The new centre is being called 'The Lexicon' for reasons no one can understand. Supposed to be finished later this year (2017), so it will be interesting to see what emerges.

Looks like a cool place. I somehow can imagine that after it has been refurbished, it will look crap.

This reminds me of Vällingby in Stockholm... It was built in the 50´s and have much of that arcitecture left intact. But many elevators has been more or less modded and modern, not a single 50´s lift original has been found... only a Zaiser escalator inside a shop was found...

i'm really surprised this escalator exists and hasn't been modernised. I remember this CLUNK-KER-CLUNK-KER-CLUNK from when I was about 7 years old!! (41 now)

OMG! I was about to type "i might be a Schindler" and 58 seconds in I was right.
I know two Schindlers and BOTH have the notorious smell of hot rubber and machinery going on and it feels like the speed is variating. I think you should have ride a Schindler in your life before you die else you miss something..

I suspect the motor room would've been nice. Also, have you ridden a paternoster before?

I was always scared of escalators and elevators and now I am even more terrified because I heard so many stories of people losing their life to the crushing machines .

+mrmattandmrchay Hey, yes I know it seems a bit weird. Normally I don't film escalators as I'm more interested in old lifts.
I'm hoping that you can come around to my side of thinking with these links...
      th-cam.com/video/PnTgwEOU_H8/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/Bc2F9DfDAiQ/w-d-xo.html
It amazes me sometimes... you name it, SOMEONE SOMEWHERE is interested in it. One that surprised me is washing machines....!!!? Yep, there are channels all about washing machines also!
Anyway, this escalator has special memories for me. It has now been ripped out in Bracknell's massive town centre modernisation programme, but I remember this from when I was about 6 years old (1978!) so wanted to film the old clunky escalator before it was removed (can't believe it's attracted 60k views though!!)
