Mackerras is arguably the greatest promoter and champion of Janacek's music. He restored the orchestration of Jenufa to Janacek's original wishes, i.e., into the form in which it is most often now performed (and rightly so). He has tremendous knowledge and experience with all of Janacek's works. There is a reason the Czech Philharmonic is playing so beautifully with him on the podium. Great performers, and so many fine solos from the orchestral first chairs., Bravi tutti.
Mackerras never attained the “star” accolade of some other conductors of his era but he was as fine as any without any doubt. I once heard him conduct a Verdi opera in London and his performance remains to this day the best I’ve ever heard from any conductor and believe me I’ve heard many.

Andrea Guarino I will hazard a guess as to why you say he was overrated. Because he wasn' t a Czech, correct? You probably don't know how highly even Czechs rate him in Czech music, and especially that of Janaček.
