    Such an exciting episode, but what else can you expect with such wonderful guests?!?
    I always find it very interesting (and slightly sad) to hear how booktubers often feel pressured about reading (or not reading) certain books for the channel's sake, because as a subscriber, I honestly could not care less about what people are reading so long as it brings them joy!!
    Also, I love Brian's one for the road segments, his positivity definitely helps me be a bit more mindful and kind (to myself and others) throughout the days! Cheers 🥰

    As usual a wonderful discussion, and this one was particularly uplifting!! I also want to mention just how many new channels I have discovered to follow through you, Johanna--I honestly think this video series is one of the best for getting to know someone new and being led to check them out. I appreciate it so much!
    Something Theo said also resonated with me really strongly... I've toyed with the idea of creating a channel one day, when my time is a bit more free, but when he said how nice it was to lurk for a bit during his break and just enjoy without being called on to contribute, it struck a chord with how I feel lol. I watch SO many streams live and the idea of trying to be part of chat and keep up with the video in real time is just so overwhelming, so I rarely do... And it makes me appreciate all the more what you guys do for us lurkers, always staying engaged and being entertaining in your discussions hours on end, week after week. I have so much admiration for that!! So I just wanted to throw that out there. You ALL are awesome. :)

    This conversation was great craic (dont worr its Irish Gaeilge for fun 😂). I'm currently 180 pages into Ships of Merior and loving it, aside from Dakar.

      I can't stand Dakar!!! 😆 Ships of Merior was my least favorite because he had so much page time. There are, however, some great moments. Warhost of Vastmark (the next book) was a homerun for me!

    I've only come around to watch the video today #teamreplay. But boy am I always happy to see and hear you guys. A very interesting as well as insightful conversation. Also, I love how all three of you have such a healthy and well-reflected perspective on the larger booktube 'thing'. I much prefer adult Booktube (no, not THAT kind of 'adult' 🤣) to the hypefest of the earlier years.
    Thanks, Johanna for always being a great host. And also thanks to Rick Thunder and Cat Stevens for being on the show!

    I am with Theo where I like to bounce around so series are tough (ASOIF took me 12 years) but I have found that most good series when you do come back to them you can easily slip back into the world. But if people are worried they can always start a notebook/journal/something where they can keep their thoughts on a series that they can then come back to.

    • @Johanna_reads
      @Johanna_reads  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is so true! I was going to bring up my journaling method but let that one go. There are so some series in which I've let years go by between books (Gentleman Bastards and The Dark Tower), and it worked out just fine! I think that's a testament to strong series!

    A factor I often see when it comes to reviews on YT is that a lot of reviewers just simply aren't very good at reviewing, and because they aren't getting views, have no incentives to improve.
    Another factor I think is reviewers for various other media (film, tv, games etc) have soured reviews on the platform for a lot of people as they've become hyper reactionary, and for many are becoming increasingly reliant on outrage culture, spread misinformation and complaining about how "woke" something supposedly is, even if its not, and leaning further into far-right ideologies. They will complain about how "woke" Disney is etc yet won't acknowledge Disney as a corporation have backed unambiguously Conservative causes.
    Some traditional publications have become out of touch and some of the more popular reviewers have become... boring, i watched some recent videos from a reviewer I used to watch years ago and he's so monotone now and has said he actively avoids making negative reviews (despite that he had a healthy balance before) and is now potentially perpetuating Toxic Positivity, so to combat a growing problem, they embraced another.

    • @Johanna_reads
      @Johanna_reads  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, it's easy to dismiss reviews based on views rather than understanding reviewing as a skill, let alone reviewing on camera! Not everyone is interested in developing that skill, and some viewers/readers are only interested in overall enjoyment level, which is understandable. I still love many channels that are not focused on in-depth reviews.
      As for what you shared about negative reviews, I find value in those, but I can also understand only selecting books you're sure to enjoy. I also value being able to look critically at books we love. Bookborn did a great video about that recently!

    I meant to ask in the chat but didn't. Have you any idea why vol 3 of The Wars of Light and Shadow, The Warhost of Vastmark, is so hard to find? I have it on order from Amazon and they have not been able to fulfill the order for over a month. My local chain bookstore is completely out of stock in store and for online order. Have you noticed this? I should have stated at the outset (excuse my manners) what an excellent episode this was with two great guests and channels that I follow. Thanks, Johanna!

    • @Johanna_reads
      @Johanna_reads  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@binglamb2176 I didn’t know there was low production for that book. The hardbacks are probably harder to find, but if it’s any help, Warhost of Vastmark is the second half of the Ships of Merior in hardback. Thank you so much!
