I just put the bag in the container. And then I seal the bag shut with a clip. This protects the food from getting eaten by your pets or in case a mouse gets in your house..
Except that plastic containers are not mouse or rat proof, and they can chew their way in without you noticing until you get to the bottom of the bag and notice holes in the plastic bag with droppings and the smell of rodent urine, and a hole in the bottom of the container.
We use a small plastic container kept in the kitchen for dog food. We refill it when it’s empty. It’s easier than going to the bag every time we need to fill bowls.

I learned a long time ago from my vet, who was president of two state boards, to leave my dog's food in the original bag and store it in the freezer. It defrosts fairly quickly and I've had no issues whatsoever with any of my dogs since I started using this storage method.

There are many benefits to keeping a cat indoors least of which is they are always where you left them. Dogs need to be on a leash, need lots of exercise and have to be protected from coyote and vehicles and other predators including the two-legged kind.
I only feed kibble as a late night snack before bed as my senior cats can't go a long time in between meals. I vacuum seal the bag after opening and place in freezer. I store about 2 weeks supply in a glass jar in the cupboard. We refill the jar right after feeding the last serving to give the food 24 hours to thaw before next feeding. Our cats share 2 cans of wet food per day plus get 1 meal of human food like cooked liver or chicken. No vet bills in the last 10 years.❤
@invalidrequest Nothing to do with diet. My cats are indoor cats and we wash our hands after touching other animals. Ou cats were vaccinated for the first 5 years of their lives and research has proven that is all you need except for animals born with immune defiency birth defects. No not at all. My family usto to be big in to hound hunting. From the 40s to the late 80's. Most of them feed nothing but dog food. The dogs lived fine ran and worked when they were supposed to. And it wasn't a little sampling of dogs . It was way over a thousand. They had different packs for foxes, deer, coon and bear, dad had at least 50 at the time. Some Vets push anything to make money. Those special diet foods are pushed at times when other alternatives exist such as making your own or switching to wet food instead of kibble. The vet biz is becoming like human healthcare. Pharmaceuticals call the shots.
I keep my dog's dry food in the bag, but I have two Rubbermaid garbage containers with snap-lock lids in my garage where I store it and also put small cardboard boxes in the bottoms of the containers to keep the bags off the plastic containers. The garage is under my house, so it's always cool down there...even on the hottest summer days. In winter, the temp stays at around 45°, so I can also keep things cold without having anything freeze. I also keep a lot of food staples for myself down there in a metal cabinet. Over my lifetime, I've had six Dobies...on my 7th now. Got my first in the early 70s and my vet recommended Pedigree dry dog food. Had very good luck with Pedigree over the decades...most of my dogs lived into their 14s without any health issues...but my vet recommended that I moisten the food with hot water, wait to cool it to warm and then feed it to them. That way, the food swells in the bowl and not in their stomach and they don't need to drink a ton of water right after they eat to soften all that dry food. This avoids bloat, dry skin problems and other digestive issues. I also mix in meat and veggies and give them fruit as treats. Since my dog is over 80 pounds, two 40 pound bags of Pedigree don't last very long, but I order them from Chewy and never had a problem of getting stale food...and since I'm older, I don't have to lug big bags home from the store.
Nice I just started moistening my little dog's food because at 14 her teeth are starting to bother her and she was eating less. She is back to eating normal amounts without switching to "people food" which vets don't recommend.
Wow!! I bought my plastic Dog Food container so long ago I don't remember where or if it's dog food safe but since this batch is about to run out I will be leaving the kibble in the bag from now on!!! At least I do let one bag run out before I dump in the new one, I also only feed them kibble for Breakfast, for dinner I make their food. This is great info, Thank you!!
Thanks for the info. I just recently learned myself as I started researching how to store dog food, long-term , pouring the kibble in a plastic container, as I’ve been doing for years can make my pets sick. Thankfully, both dogs who eat different food are running out of food this weekend so I’m gonna take out the leftover kibble and wash the containers out very good and leave them outside to dry for the rest of the day. From now on, I will be storing my kibble in the bags in the plastic container. I’m also gonna be looking into getting airtight containers as well.
We installed a trash compactor in our kitchen and just didn't find much use for it. So, it's perfect size to fit a large bag go kibble. We open the compactor, man handle the bag of food into it, then carefully open the top of the bag so that it can be folded down over the top. it's amazing how well this works out for us and our hooligans! Thank you so much for this video, it serves to reinforce our thinking!
I'm not convinced but appreciate the message to keep your pet's food clean and safe. I use the same 2 containers (I wash them before I dump the new bag into them) But might entertain getting a bin that can hold the giant bag of cat food and just store the bag in the closed bin that way. But, for 15 years these two rubbermaid bins have worked perfectly and my cats still scream and yowl for their food when the food dishes are empty.
I store mine in a sealed glass container. I wash the container every other bag. I always finish old food before opening a new bag, I store it in a cabinet away from the sun, & I’ll now take a picture each time of the lot number. Sheesh, pet food should come in resealable bags. Then I’d just keep it in the bag. Don’t worry though my girls also get other protein, fish, fresh veggies, fruit, whole foods as well.
Glad I’m on top of this already. Great info. One thing I do with the bag is empty, reuse. It becomes a trash bag. Tuck in a 13 gallon trash bucket and fold the sides down. I have a German Shepherd and he has a few cats. Plus, help feral kitties. So we have lots of bags to repurpose. To include litter bags. Hope the tip helps 😊
I buy a bag large enough to last one month. I pour some into a plastic container meant for Human Cereal, store it in the pantry, and refill it weekly. My dogs get fed twice daily. Now I know I need to start washing the container every refill. So, my question would be this: Should humans stop storing their cereal (kibble) in containers made and sold for that purpose??
Yes the chemicals that make up plastic containers are toxic and they continue to vent over the lifetime of the container. Bachelor of science medical technology also bachelor of arts teaching science high school many master's level courses teaching science.
I use glass containers that seal nicely not too big, holds about 1.5 to 2lbs so they go thru it quickly.. I usually don't buy the bigger bags. Containers sit on counter out of sunlight. My cats love their kibbles.
Primarily feed my cat wet food but keep some kibble around for treats & use in scavenging toys I made. I keep it in a ceramic jar that has a metal clasped top with a silicone seal. Same as I use for my coffee beans.
The cat I've adopted was fed wet food exclusively by her previous owners. Now she's losing all her teeth (8 y/o). All cats need some crunchy food in their diet to clean their teeth. I think that's a good plan you have, they don't need a lot. But they do need some.
@@purplemicrodot58 I'm sorry but that's a myth & nothing but a marketing tool. 'Crunchy' food does not clean teeth & in fact the ingredients that bind the kibble together also help to bind starches to tooth enamel, which makes for prime plaque breeding etc. Their teeth need cleaning the same as ours & unless you have a feline that tolerates toothbrushing at home, you'll need to get regular cleanings at the vet if you want them to have healthy teeth. Especially when you consider their lifespan is twice that of the feral feline.
Thank you for the info. Pet suffocation is another big danger to keep in mind about large food or cat litter containers. ‼️❌ I've seen a video on instagram where a cat was able to get into one of those large plastic food containers and the lid closed on him trapping him in. He nearly suffocated before he was found, and others haven't been as lucky 😿 I looked it up and found a website called Prevent Pet Suffocation that has helpful advice. Quote from their article on plastic containers and the dangers to cats: "Prevent Pet Suffocation has documented several felines that have suffocated in a plastic bin or container. Cats are quick on their feet and their agility allows them to easily jump on countertops, tables, refrigerators, and other appliances where they have easier access to food bags and containers" So even if you think your curious cat won’t possibly get into a large food container, closet, pantry etc. where you keep the food, think twice and keep your pets safe 🩷
@@thebkpets I hadn’t either until I saw someone posted what happened to their cat, it was with one of the bins that are Amazon top sellers in the pet food container category. We all learn from each other!
I live in the country. Yes, I feed my dogs kibble but they get other stuff too. I store the kibble in the bag in a large metal trash can with a lid. That is to keep rats, opossums, raccons, and squirrels out of it. I store all of the animal food for all of the farm animals that way. I have dogs, cats, meat rabbits, goats, guinea fowl, and chickens. The cats are barn cats they take care of the snake and rodent issues for the most part. The guineas and chickens take care of the bugs and snakes. The dogs take care of the wild rabbits that love our garden.
Our BC eats what we eat for dinner, mixed with a bit of small batch kibble. Cat's the same, only they just get kibble as a small snack. Raw meat, cooked meat.
I recently inherited a 6 year old, indoor outdoor cat. She likes the dry stuff, but I’m going to slowly switch her to swanson chicken packs. Pretty much just chicken chunks in water. She loves it!
One bag at a time, leaving in the self sealing bag and placed into a stainless metal container with lid in a cool, dry, dark place, never adding old to new and finishing the bag within a couple or months at most. Plus throwing out food that has sat in the dish for more than about 36 hours - at most. Water changed daily. Litter cleaned daily using only non toxic easy to clean litter. Often human companions do not know why their dog or cat suddenly gets ill. Yep, it can be the way you handle their food, whatever that food might be.
Genius video. I store my dog and cat food in a big container, thinking about what you're saying long ago, but your video assured me that I was doing the right thing! Valuable info! Thanks!!!
My nieces’ Frenchie was always getting sick and having allergies….they switched from Kibble to a natural food, I think Farmers something…..anyway she’s MUCH better now.
you always see, warning signs on plastic brushes for dogs and such for a risk of cancer due to the plastic. I will be keeping my kibble in the bag from now on. Never really thought about it until this video, even after seeing the warning on a dog brush I bought for the plastic marterial. wow.
Yep plastic is horrable in many ways. It is toxic it is not easy to recycle it does not degrade in landfills either. Plastic should only be used for medical stuff and some products but not everything. We need to go back to glass, metal paper. I am old enough to remember returnable bottles and wax paper straws and milk cartons. We surived
What do you mean noted brands? Brands we showed in this video? This isn’t a video about “what kibble to buy”. It’s simply how to store and nothing else
My dog was diagnosed with cancer...given mere months to live....we stopped kibble and made him his food ourself, fresh, organic, lots of fish, cooked meats, safe vegetables and Thai rice, pumpkin incorporated into his treats. Tumors gone in first year....he lived 8 more years passing recently having just made 22 years old...he was a boarder collie mix and smart as they come. Love your dog? Say no to the toxic kibble...do your homework.
I've been using the same tupperware container my mom used for her dog for my dog. We're talking 30 year old container if you count mom using for human food for years before her dogs food. Now it's at my house with my dogs kibble in it.
Thanks so much for sharing this with us; I know kibble is a bit tricky but I never suspected it could become dangerous! I have 2 happy house panthers and I"m always looking for new ways to upgrade their diet. 🐈⬛ Mostly I share meat with them at mealtimes, and spend a chunk more $ so I can feel assured I"m not buying a whack of fillers in their food. * Yes, I read the labels carefully. The strange part of that is the fact they both gravitate toward the cheaper stuff, and I wonder, is it more tasty than the higher quality cans?
House panthers, how cute 😂 I recently began weaning mine off Blue Wilderness to FirstMate kibble, and they LOVE the FirstMate brand (I do both wet/dry diet, and their coats are so shiny and soft now). I think it's partially bc of the kibble shape...seems to be easier to get out of the bowl bc it's shaped like a 3 pointed star and flatter. So unless they're the same look, it could be kibble shape making the difference.
Bro everyone's opinion is that every type of food for a dog is horrible and not what u should feed or do to food. At this point my dogs just screwed and eating my diet of doritos and the $1.69 pack of hot dogs from Walmart.
We have one of those tall narrow bins that was created for storing rolls of wrapping paper. We don't dump anything into it. Instead, we just put the entire 20 lbs. bag into it. The top of the bag is rolled down and pinned with a big clamp. This bin is kept in the basement. Upstairs in the kitchen we have a plastic container that was meant to hold breakfast cereal. We periodically refill this container from the 20 lbs. bag. This makes refilling the cats' bowls a much easier chore and the kibble is well maintained in a food grade container for shorter periods of time. That smaller container is kept on a high kitchen shelf where sunlight (and cats) does not get to it.
I put the food into sandwich size ziploc style bags and back into the original bag then into a plastic container. The plastic keeps insects or pests or even smoke (not a great cook) or sprays out. The zips keep air out and all of the nutrients fresh. Roughly one or two servings each zip and I did not introduce much air into any of the servings, I squeeze air out before sealing. Sounds like a lot of work but done the first day zero work for weeks and I am confident the food is good.
Great video!! 😊🐺 I'm just thinking.. should people wash their food container before replacing with the new dog food? Then I'm thinking about if the washed container isn't completely rinsed abd dry.. chance of mold in the spots we cant see? 😮 Anyway.. just a thought.. sorry to be picky! Thank you for making rhis video 😊 I like how you stored the food at the end 😊 It's best way for kibble
@@naturetrail3043 I just washed my plastic dog food containers out. They both hold 40 pounds apiece. I could not believe the amount of oiliness that was on the inside of the container. Thankfully, both my dogs have never become sick from the food and in fact, my one dog will be 15 years old November 7, which, according to my vet isn’t very common since she is a large dog weighs between 65 and 70 pounds. A border collie retriever mix.
Here's a question. This works fabulously if you are giving your dog/cat one type of food. However, what if you are feeding them a mixture of dry foods? OH, and what about storing some of the food in an automatic feeder that distributes a few times of the day? How much food goes rancid in how much time? Also, I have had several bags ziplock features break as the bags are consistently opened/closed. What's a solution to verifying the kibble in the bag with the "ziplock failure hole" (whatever size it is) doesn't go rancid when that occurs? Thanks for the knowledge!
Good to know I've been doing it right, I buy a brand that the large bag is actualy filled with smaller 500g bags, I store the little bags in a big food safe bin inside a cabinet, then once open I put the kibble in a little hermetic glass jar that stores about enough for 2 days for my 2 cats, close the bag with a pin and put it back in the bin (a little bag lasts about a week for 2 cats, so their food is always fresh).
Very good video. We do use that plastic container from Amazon, but the idea about losing the Lot Number was brilliant and not taking it out of the main bag is different than what we do. So, we will change our ways after watching your video.
I started using the food grade sealable bucket method. Pour the bag of food into the 5 gallon bucket, screw on the gasketed lid into the mounted lid. Saves me the issue of food going moldy or mice. Also can add in the iron powder packets to remove moisture. And the buckets can be stored outside or in the garage in the winter... safe from mice.
There’s a delivery service that covers one of the PetSmart stores in town and so I ordered some new food and some smaller bowls. Currently have large bowls that are in the window that my cat eats from, and I use Costco size bags and I store them in a plastic see-through food, safe container, so time to change all that
Very informative!! Great video~ I keep kibble in the bags that they come in, store in a cool, dark area, and never buy bags larger than 10 lbs, so that I can use the contents within a few wks after opening.
If kibble is so bad, why is it sold by so many companies? Kinda the same for humans eating processed food and cereals with food coloring by many manufacturers.
don't forget to consider lead, I don't serve food or water in anything but clear glass or all white ceramic dishes as lead can leach into foods if made w/colored glass or colored anything
Some of us have 50 pound dog food bags (I have 4 german shepherd/labs), live in the country and can't keep mice out of the bag unless its in a plastic container. What do you suggest?
Also, dont buy a bag that is too big for your pet to use up fairly quickly. Big bags are more cost effective, but only if you have multiple pets eating that bag.
My vet said feeding your dog the crappiest canned food you could possibly find, is far better than the highest quality dry kibble you could possibly find.
I see your point and have heard this but vets are not the best source of nutritional information just like docs are not for people...most food found in traditional grocery stores that sell pet food is garbage, you have to go online to find the better quality, there are some descent dry foods/dehydrated/raw out there that are much better than wet food (many wet foods made w/grains as first ingredient, highly inflammatory to pets) but you have to look around/research and its important to serve filtered good tasting water to pets/they will drink it if the water is fresh and clean (served in a large clear glass bowl is best)...blessings to all
@ very good points. Thank you. Especially human doctors. My experience has been terrible and they just want to put me on crappy prescriptions and don't even bother to give me quality advice.
Gees guess I did things correctly by accident. I presume same applies to cat kibble. I empty part of bag in cookie jar glass or ceramic that doesn’t let light in. The rest of bag was sealed with clips and put in metal container in dark cool place. Yes I had to go in every week but that was okay. Just one cat but she lived to over18 years. Still miss her. Thanks for the info, thinking about a small dog, I need to get out and walk more. Caring for pets is so much more complicated than it was.
I feed my cats wet/canned (morning) & dry kibble (late afternoon). They seem to 'graze' in the dry all night. I never buy a large bag of dry food as it would last several months! Good advice about containers. Thank you.
Thanks for the info. I stick to the brand of cat kibble my vet recommended and buy the smaller bag to use up with a clip. Will take your good ideas and not use plastic bins. Cheers! 😺
Best to store kibble in it's original bag in the refrigerator and only take out what is being served at that time. Make sure you press out the air in the bag and close tightly.
Chelsea Kent in Lakewood, Colorado (Hero's Pets) is also a Canine Nutritionist. Her research shows that NO BRAND of kibble is healthy, regardless of how it is stored. We are so glad that we switched to The Farmer's Dog for our furry friends.
@lindah.1104 We have a small mini-split in our garage to control the extreme temps in summer and winter -- more for the deep freeze and extra fridge out there, but it also benefits the catfood storage for our outside gang. They patrol for snakes and rodents, which there are plenty of here in the countryside. 😊
Thanks you so much for this, very informational. This is why youtube was created. Im going to start getting smaller bags of dog food. I get 24 pound and my dog usually finishes it within a month.
I have a screw lid dog food container like the one shown in the video . but I no longer use it . I use an empty popcorn can to store my dog's food . It is light proof , and although not necessarily airtight , it serves the purpose , as with two dogs , a 15 pound bag doesn't last that long .
I buy 34 pound bags as it is cheaper that way. Once the old food is close to being used up, I open the new and divide into metal popcorn tins with tight fitting tops. I only take out enough into a smaller container to last 2-3 weeks.
Many people won't agree that the human natural diet should be meat and meat primarily or entirely. But nobody can argue that a cat and a dog naturally not in captivity or with humans would not eat vegetables or rice or any of that garbage. Dogs and cats should not be eating kibble processed foods. They should be eating meat, fish, eggs, and dairy For variety, a little bit of fruit or vegetables can't really hurt in moderation, but it sure the hell shouldn't be the principal of their diet. With that said, yeah don't store food in plastic .
Kibble isn’t bad. In the end it depends on what your pet likes, dry or wet. They’ll tell you what works. My cats past and present only like a certain brand. I saw a commercial for a wet cat food. So I bought a can. He refused to eat it. He didn’t care about slick marketing. He didn’t touch it so no more of that and went back to what he liked in wet available. That’s my back up.
Well shit....I had absolutely NO knowledge of this nor have I EVER had any vet provide me with this information. Having said that I do find it hard to to ignore the sense of this claim and it will cause me little or no extra work to adopt a better manner of storing my wee guys food...thanks for the information and I have subscribed to your channel
I went to Uline and got an industrial dry-ingredient storage container. These containers are used to hold ingredients in manufacturing human food. I couldn’t find a “dog food” one that seemed like it was actually airtight at all. Now it makes sense.
I prefer if people used wet food to feed their dogs. Wet food is for more easily understood as perishable & it’s more nutritious. By wet food I mean homemade dog food/prey model diet/precooked wholistic food for dogs like “the farmer’s dog” series. However, these are great tips for those who have yet to make the switch, or those who seek to store treats!
Fortunately I have one very large dog and and a medium sized one and their 20 kg kibble disappears in 4 weeks maximum. I never mix old and new food, keep it in the bag and have that in a huge cabinet on my balcony.
I've tried explaining this to family about their dogs food but they just say "Oh whatever, this is how I've always done it." Yeah, and that's why your dog is always getting sick. It's starting to feel like animal abuse and pisses me off.
I have a bag of cat food stored in the bag, in my outside storage unit. He did get sick after eating it and it's past 6 weeks old. It gets hot in the outside storage unit to.
I use glass mason jars to store small amounts of food. It's better not to open the large bag of food every day, so keep enough for a few days in a mason jar.
One thing I learned was "premium" kibble is still terrible for your pet, I tried hard to make enough money to provide for my family and my wife did her best to keep us healthy and happy, she constantly tried to upgrade the food for our fur kids and though the price was increasing, the brand was still sneaking cheap fillers into the food to increase profits... I was buying fromm cat food and my wife was reading the ingredients not realizing that "pea flour" or many of the other ingredients were used to increase the protein amount but was not increasing species specific protein seeing as cats are obligate carnivores meaning the protein in peas doesn't relate to their needs and that my cat actually became diabetic eating it...
We simply make our own dog food. Chicken, Rice, and peas or green beans. No salt or seasoning… My dog is a Corgi and she doesn’t need more than a cup a day. She is 14 and very healthy.
Mine doesn't either. I binder clip the food shut, place the bag in a big Ziploc freezer bag with a slider seal top, squeeze as much air out as I can, then put it in the air tight plastic container. I'm probably doing too much but it's worked so far 😅 Edit: As long as it's in a dark, somewhat cool place it should be fine. If not temp controlled maybe buy smaller kibble bags to make sure you use it up in a month or so. Or keep it in an insulated cooler on hot days.
I take the required amount from the bag which I then vacuum seal before freeze drying and vacuum sealing again. I then load the bag into a steel sphere which I vacuum seal while welding shut. Finally I load this into a rocket and launch it into the cold dark vacuum of space until I need it again. I don't think you should be able to own pets if you don't make this kind of effort.
I just put the bag in the container. And then I seal the bag shut with a clip. This protects the food from getting eaten by your pets or in case a mouse gets in your house..
Great routine!
Don't make it too pet proof, if you live alone and something happens your pet could starve :(
Except that plastic containers are not mouse or rat proof, and they can chew their way in without you noticing until you get to the bottom of the bag and notice holes in the plastic bag with droppings and the smell of rodent urine, and a hole in the bottom of the container.
Yep. Same.
If a mouse gets into my house chances are the cat brought it and.... and the cat won't need kibble .............😸
We use a small plastic container kept in the kitchen for dog food. We refill it when it’s empty. It’s easier than going to the bag every time we need to fill bowls.

Nice storage method!
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
My dogs always ate kibble. They lived to ripe old ages.
My grandpa smoked three packs a day and lived to be 89. So what are you saying? Does that mean kibble and cigarettes are ok?
Sheltie ate kibble and lived to 19. He thought he was a puppy right up until the last 6 months when cancer finally came on. Kibble isn't the devil.
Love that your dogs lived a long time ❤️
@oleboy4332 Yes, if your dog smokes less than a pack a day. My shepherds prefer cigars. To each his own.😊
@@Texas240 Sounds just like my Labrador retriever. She died two weeks before her 18th birthday
You’re amazing! ❤️
But, for 15 years these two rubbermaid bins have worked perfectly and my cats still scream and yowl for their food when the food dishes are empty.
a lot of this is good sense but not many folks have good sense, thanks for sharing
Thank you!
❤️❤️❤️
But don’t all containers including glass, all have plastic tops?
@@klotchie no... and so what if they did? you aren't storing them upside down...
So smart!
My opinion is yes!
But don’t all containers including glass, all have plastic tops?
@@klotchieI have large glass jars with metal lids, and vacuum seal glass jars with glass tops. No glass jars with plastic tops or lids.
Dang I just finished pouring a new bag of food in my storage vault. Guess I know for the next bag 🤷🏾♀️
There ya go! ❤️
It is covered in cute paintings?

@@purplemicrodot58 There is NO pet food that cleans teeth, despite the manufacturers claiming it does. Bones and raw carrots do the job much better.
Didn’t even think about this!
Smart
Our BC eats what we eat for dinner, mixed with a bit of small batch kibble. Cat's the same, only they just get kibble as a small snack. Raw meat, cooked meat.
❤️❤️❤️
I recently inherited a 6 year old, indoor outdoor cat. She likes the dry stuff, but I’m going to slowly switch her to swanson chicken packs. Pretty much just chicken chunks in water. She loves it!
Just chicken doesn't contain proper complete nutrition for a cat, also human processed containerized chicken has tons of salt and preservatives.
Great routine!

It’s a lot to think about! You’re doing amazing ❤️
Yep plastic is horrable in many ways. It is toxic it is not easy to recycle it does not degrade in landfills either. At almost $200 for a 22 lb bag of food for your noted brands is WOW! who can afford with lots of animals trying to rescue.
What do you mean noted brands? Brands we showed in this video? This isn’t a video about “what kibble to buy”. It’s simply how to store and nothing else
Thank you for rescuing ❤

I buy the smallest 2 lb bag of cat kibble. It lasts about 2 weeks with 2 cats. It has a vacuum seal so I keep it sealed. Hope that does the job.
Love it!
Do you wash it?
Thanks so much for sharing this with us; I know kibble is a bit tricky but I never suspected it could become dangerous!
I have 2 happy house panthers and I"m always looking for new ways to upgrade their diet.
🐈⬛
Mostly I share meat with them at mealtimes, and spend a chunk more $ so I can feel assured I"m not buying a whack of fillers in their food. * Yes, I read the labels carefully.
The strange part of that is the fact they both gravitate toward the cheaper stuff, and I wonder, is it more tasty than the higher quality cans?
I’m glad you’re so mindful of your cats’ nutrition!
House panthers, how cute 😂
I recently began weaning mine off Blue Wilderness to FirstMate kibble, and they LOVE the FirstMate brand (I do both wet/dry diet, and their coats are so shiny and soft now). I think it's partially bc of the kibble shape...seems to be easier to get out of the bowl bc it's shaped like a 3 pointed star and flatter. So unless they're the same look, it could be kibble shape making the difference.
So helpful. Is this true for rabbit and small animal pellets? 😊
I’m not sure but I would guess yes!
Bro everyone's opinion is that every type of food for a dog is horrible and not what u should feed or do to food. At this point my dogs just screwed and eating my diet of doritos and the $1.69 pack of hot dogs from Walmart.
Weird. I've had dogs all my life and they've never been sick from food stored in a plastic container. In fact, all my dogs have been very healthy.
Cool Steve
Very to the point and informative…thank you

Even I can taste plastic from ziploc like say potato chips if stored for a few days. I wonder why that is....
Great video!! 😊🐺
I'm just thinking.. should people wash their food container before replacing with the new dog food?
Then I'm thinking about if the washed container isn't completely rinsed abd dry.. chance of mold in the spots we cant see? 😮
Anyway.. just a thought.. sorry to be picky! Thank you for making rhis video 😊
I like how you stored the food at the end 😊 It's best way for kibble

@@naturetrail3043 I just washed my plastic dog food containers out. They both hold 40 pounds apiece. I could not believe the amount of oiliness that was on the inside of the container. Thankfully, both my dogs have never become sick from the food and in fact, my one dog will be 15 years old November 7, which, according to my vet isn’t very common since she is a large dog weighs between 65 and 70 pounds. A border collie retriever mix.
Great video. Thanks.

You’re killing it!
Very good video. We do use that plastic container from Amazon, but the idea about losing the Lot Number was brilliant and not taking it out of the main bag is different than what we do. So, we will change our ways after watching your video.
Thank you so much for your kind words! :)
Cant this cause mites too if not correctly stored .i never stockpile ether
Absolutely!
Very informative..I will be making changes

There’s a delivery service that covers one of the PetSmart stores in town and so I ordered some new food and some smaller bowls. I keep kibble in the bags that they come in, store in a cool, dark area, and never buy bags larger than 10 lbs, so that I can use the contents within a few wks after opening.
Thanks so much!
Im going to start doing that.
If kibble is so bad, why is it sold by so many companies? Kinda the same for humans eating processed food and cereals with food coloring by many manufacturers.

Kibble is the standard American diet for dogs
convenience and follow the money
don't forget to consider lead, I don't serve food or water in anything but clear glass or all white ceramic dishes as lead can leach into foods if made w/colored glass or colored anything
What I noticed, most of the time it's really hard to find food expiration date at all! It's simply not there!
It’s always so small!
how about using a brown paper bag in the plastic container. My container is not big enough for the size bags
Is your container airtight?
Some of us have 50 pound dog food bags (I have 4 german shepherd/labs), live in the country and can't keep mice out of the bag unless its in a plastic container. What do you suggest?
Get an airtight container that can fit a 50 lb bag, put one bag in there at a time and keep the food in the bag!
Also, dont buy a bag that is too big for your pet to use up fairly quickly. Big bags are more cost effective, but only if you have multiple pets eating that bag.
Facts!
some people live rural.....we buy in bulk, thank you
My vet said feeding your dog the crappiest canned food you could possibly find, is far better than the highest quality dry kibble you could possibly find.
Because of the moisture in canned food?
I heard this about cats, but I didn’t realize it was also for dogs.

Same applies for cats!
I feed my cats wet/canned (morning) & dry kibble (late afternoon). They seem to 'graze' in the dry all night.
I never buy a large bag of dry food as it would last several months!
Good advice about containers. Thank you.
Thank you!

Why the fridge?
Chelsea Kent in Lakewood, Colorado (Hero's Pets) is also a Canine Nutritionist. Her research shows that NO BRAND of kibble is healthy, regardless of how it is stored. We are so glad that we switched to The Farmer's Dog for our furry friends.
We know Chelsea very well and she sells multiple brands of kibble in her store :)
And don’t store kibble in the garage in the summer. Temperatures can get way over 80 degrees!
Facts!

Great video. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I have a screw lid dog food container like the one shown in the video . but I no longer use it .
I use an empty popcorn can to store my dog's food .
It is light proof , and although not necessarily airtight , it serves the purpose , as with two dogs , a 15 pound bag doesn't last that long .
What about a sealed glass jar in a closed pantry closet?
I buy 34 pound bags as it is cheaper that way. Once the old food is close to being used up, I open the new and divide into metal popcorn tins with tight fitting tops. I only take out enough into a smaller container to last 2-3 weeks.
Thank you🐾
You're welcome 😊
Many people won't agree that the human natural diet should be meat and meat primarily or entirely.
But nobody can argue that a cat and a dog naturally not in captivity or with humans would not eat vegetables or rice or any of that garbage.
Dogs and cats should not be eating kibble processed foods. They should be eating meat, fish, eggs, and dairy
For variety, a little bit of fruit or vegetables can't really hurt in moderation, but it sure the hell shouldn't be the principal of their diet.
With that said, yeah don't store food in plastic
.
Great advice I’m change our routine today!
We feed our dogs homemade dog food once a day and kibble once a day.

Glad we could help! Appreciate the kind words ❤️
Dry pet food is prone to mite infestation, so large bags may benefit from storage in smaller, regularly cleaned, sealable containers.
I went to Uline and got an industrial dry-ingredient storage container. These containers are used to hold ingredients in manufacturing human food. I couldn’t find a “dog food” one that seemed like it was actually airtight at all. Now it makes sense.
Oh very interesting!
I've been storing kibble in the original bag which is sealed in an opaque plastic box for the same reasons you outlined in your video.
Well done. I agree with everything you said.

Using plastics for animals is just as dangerous for humans. Thanks for making more people aware to help their animals stay well.
I have one of those big plastic containers, but put the whole bag in. And I keep dog food bags to put trash in lol

I leave in the bag, but keep in the plastic bin. Is that wrong?
That’s what we do!
Fortunately I have one very large dog and and a medium sized one and their 20 kg kibble disappears in 4 weeks maximum. I never mix old and new food, keep it in the bag and have that in a huge cabinet on my balcony.
That would last less them a week for my big dog

I've tried explaining this to family about their dogs food but they just say "Oh whatever, this is how I've always done it."
Yeah, and that's why your dog is always getting sick. It's starting to feel like animal abuse and pisses me off.

Grain free doesn’t automatically make it better
Be sure it doesn't use chickpeas and other legumes based. Not good for heart, they also hold mold.

Why *buy* the "pet food container" at all, if you are just storing the bag inside it?
Because bags aren’t always airtight and containers usually are
I use glass mason jars to store small amounts of food. It's better not to open the large bag of food every day, so keep enough for a few days in a mason jar.
I use a galvanized steel feed container for my cats. I've also make sure to use all the old kibble first. So I guess I've been doing it correctly.
No salt or seasoning…
My dog is a Corgi and she doesn’t need more than a cup a day. She is 14 and very healthy.
What do you use to make sure it’s fully balanced? Any sort of multivitamin?
I will never get this time back 😢
Say more
My bag doesn’t reseal, is that ok? And my dad doesn’t want the food inside the house :/
What do you currently store it in?
Mine doesn't either. I binder clip the food shut, place the bag in a big Ziploc freezer bag with a slider seal top, squeeze as much air out as I can, then put it in the air tight plastic container.
I'm probably doing too much but it's worked so far 😅
Edit: As long as it's in a dark, somewhat cool place it should be fine.
Agreed lol
