Let me tell you something. I listen to hard hip hop, hard rock, industrial etc. etc........This song is so different to what I am used to. But I dig it. Fantastic piece of music period.....

This is my first GG song I ever heard, it was on a Cd by Dave Bainbridge called Songs for Luca. He wss the guitar player in Iona back then. He made the cd with songs from musicians he knew to raise money for his song Luca. I liked the song, but my ears weren't ready yet for other songs. But now 15 years on and I acquired the GG taste and it tastes well! What a band!
I wish I owned all those early Gentle Giant albums. For now The power And The Glory and Octopus will have to do. One of the outstandingly inventive U.K. progressive groups..

I´m not a musician, but isn´t this song - beautiful, haunting and mystic like a prayer from the middle-ages or something - based on a blues-scheme? Kerry Genius Minnear.
It's beautiful, haunting and mystic like a prayer from the Middle Ages for ALL TIME - perhaps now, more than ever. As far as a blues scheme is concerned... naaaaah. I don't think so.
@@thomassicard3733 It´s some kind of a common harmonic pattern that´s usual in current respectively 70´s music, the way the second line of the verse ends on different and especially these notes. Therefore it´s somewhat predictable which is interesting and strange cause the song in its entirety, the vocal melody sounds so medieval and out of this/our world.
I already knew the band back then, but not The Power and the Glory. When I first heard this special tune I remember thinking "their music and capability of doing it is absolutely limitless - it´s a universe of music, and it´s designed perfectly". Gentle Giant | The Power and the Glory (1974) - From Wikipedia- - - The Power and the Glory is the sixth studio album by the British progressive rock group Gentle Giant, released in 1974. Contrary to popular belief, the title of the album and its many lyrical themes were not inspired by author Graham Greene's novel of the same name, although Derek Shulman was aware of Greene's novel. Guitarist Gary Green has cited this album as his favourite by the band. A loose concept was hatched for the album prior to recording. "At the time, the Watergate scandal was happening," recalls Derek. "The Cold War issues were coming to a head. The concept for the album was based on the corruption of power and how people on the bottom are affected by the people on top. Money and power will win no matter what and the people that are hoping for the best won’t usually get the best. The label we were on at that time, WWA, was an imprint of Vertigo. Vertigo was a fully owned company of Phonogram which is Polygram which is now Universal which will probably be GE in a week which is going to be the government soon enough. So there’s the corruption of power right there! The power and the glory! Again! Still to this day!" The cover art, depicting a King of Spades, is taken from the 1926-1933 "Prinz-Karte-402" deck painted by Austrian Artist Hans Printz (1865-1925) and produced by the German playing card company Bernhard Dondorf Gm.b.H. The second verse from "Proclamation" was sampled in Travis Scott's "Hyaena" from his album Utopia. Releases The album was originally released in the US and Canada by Capitol Records, as would all Gentle Giant's albums until Civilian. The original LP cover was diecut, with rounded upper corners. In a 2010 interview Derek Shulman announced that the band are working at creating an animated film based around the themes, characters and songs of the album. The animations subsequently became available in the album's Blu-ray release, of July 2014, which also features a remix (both in stereo and 5.1 surround format) by Steven Wilson. Kerry Minnear should've had the lead vocal chores on more songs. Beautiful voice. It was many years before I knew it was him singing.
One of the best songs EVER. Period. In ANY musical genre.
Thank you DEB, I agree

The lyrics of this song are so powerful. It has a religious connotance.

The genius of Kerry Minnear.

He really is a genius, and with the voice of an angel. Love your user name - my two favorite bands.

The best song that hardly anybody has heard.
But WE have heard it. Amen!
Let's keep it that way, I don't want this 'cheapened' with constant radio play.

Such a haunting melody with beautiful lyrics!
This is my alarm song to wake up to. Such a beautiful song, keeps my dreams going.
[Verse 1]
As the dust settles, see our dreams
All coming true, it depends on you
If our times, they are troubled times
Show us the way
Tell us what to do
[Verse 2]
As our faith, maybe aimless blind
Hope our ideals and our thoughts are yours
And believing the promises
Please make your claims
Really so sincere
[Chorus 1]
Be our guide, our light and our way of life
And let the world see the way we lead our way
Hopes, dreams, hopes dreaming that all our sorrow's gone
[Verse 3]
In your hands, holding everyone's
Future and fate, it is all in you
Make us strong, build our unity
All men as one, it is all in you
[Chorus]
Be our guide, our light and our way of life
And let the world see the way we lead our way
Hopes, dreams, hopes dreaming that all our sorrow's gone
Forever
