So Freddie even manages to break a Honda😂...
I know!!😆
lol
Yes, no bike is safe with Freddie 😂
Jeeez! What do you do to these bikes?
they should give him a medal. "Hondas always work". Not with Freddie, lmao 😂
Just a wee tip. Your better jumping it in 3rd gear. The big twins have too much torque to do it in 2nd. They just lock the back wheel and as a result the engine doesn’t turn much 😁
Good to know cheers 👍
Good to know. Thank you
2nd...and hit the starter switch
Dumb question, but what is the mechanical reason for it being better in 3rd gear? Wouldn't it be harder to turn the engine that way?
And I always stand on the pegs and when I'm about to release the clutch at the same time I plank my arse hard back down on the seat so the back wheel doesn't skid.
Someone might have mentioned it before - there are a lot of comments now. But a cheap and useful tool is one of those telescopic, magnetic retrievers for impossible to reach, wayward fasteners etc.
To add on top of this, a nice magnetic wristband is a huge help too!

I get a rag and plug all around the battery cavity so if dropped caught by the rag. About time the terminals were made twist fit
Hands up who’s also dropped their battery nut or bolt down into the depths ?
Cheers Freddie .
Made me smile , we ride amongst you !!
And left it there and just hunted down a replacement in the box of bits...
I made a bolt retriever with stiff gardening wire and a Geomag magnet taped to the wire......
We have all done it, Freddie. Welcome to the club. I've also found plenty of bits including tools that other people have misplaced on their vehicles.
Save them from old batteries!
That's why the god-thingie gave us magnetic pickup on bendy wire tools at all automotive stores....
Welcome to my mechanical world Freddie - thanks for making me feel better about my skills (which seem about the same as yours!). All’s well that ends well buddy…..

Lol
@FreddieDobbs The halfords charger is showing the charging volts, not the battery resting voltage. Also you need to get you neighbour to check the voltage when the bike is running (around 13-14v) otherwise it could go flat again. Also check it after leaving on the bike overnight, if flat then could be battery or something draining it. I would charge up the jump pack and take it with you until you know it's not going happen again..
I find it extraordinary that I am still watching a channel based in the main around motorcycles but where the channel maker barely knows a seat from a solenoid. Also where the words 'coffee shop' seem to be the main feature of every quaint English town, village or city. However despite all this there is a certain magic in your enthusiasm and also in the relationship with Monica that is relaxing so I will probably stay subscribed Freddie. Wishing you both lots of luck and safe travels. BTW am watching your Bonnie progress on 'The Wurks' 😉
It's what life is about bikes and coffee 😊
It's a learning curve - you are learning the basics that most bikers learned at sixteen on mopeds. Keep biking keep learning !!

@@laurentvenet2758 they’re usually connected straight to the battery.
Freddie seems to have recurring electrical gremlins on everything... :D 12v led-acid batteries are typically 12.7v ish fully charged and about 11.5v or so fully discharged (but still ok) and you can tell if a charging system is functioning if they're 13v+ when they're running typically around 14.5v with a good fast charge. I'm also following your progress of your bonneville at the wurks channel. I'm glad to see it's getting the attention that it needs!
The irony of Freddie selling a tool roll 😊
I feel your pain! I spent 30 min trying to screw in a battery terminal screw on my Interceptor after fitting a quad lock charger. Hassle!

@@jamesf8864 wow
I'm sure FD is big enough and ugly enough to handle a suggestion to get a thunder box! 🤐
Thunderbox from Healtech Electronics is a power distribution module that allows multiple accessories (heated grips, phone charger etc) to be fitted to the battery whilst preventing battery drainage.
Freddie, so pleased you got the Honda to start. I'm sure you would benefit from a basic motorcycle mechanics course, you would really enjoy it too. When I started biking, years ago, it was Villiers two stroke engines, generally easy engines to work on. I had to do a 10 week course on learning to ride ( on my Dad's insistence!). It includes engine mechanics and I loved every minute of it. I'm sure some motorcycle garage could give you a bit of training! Please don't go to 'you know who' though!!! 😅
that would be a great idea on a video vlog for freddie, finding one and attending. im sure there are more riders out there that would be interested in that. I would
Did the same in late 1970s, that course has stood me in good stead ever since. Back in those days, we also had metalwork class at school, and our forward-thinking teacher got us all doing basic maintenance jobs on a Honda C90. As you may remember, most 16 year-olds were desperate to get a moped on the road in those days, and had a reasonable expectation of being able to afford it! Happy days!
I forgot to mention my 10 week course was an RAC/ACU course in the late 60s, and was brilliant. The motorcycle instructors followed you round town making sure you followed the course riding instructions. I started the course on one of their BSA Bantams, and finished and passed the course on my very own Francis Barnett 125 Kestrel. Got a badge to prove it !! Happy days!!
If the battery is ok/healthy the voltage 'at rest' will be at least 12.7 volts. At rest means after it has settled after riding or being charged. (settling will take a good 30 minutes). When charging a discharged battery you will see the voltage rise as it charges, often to 14 volts or so, that is normal. The voltage isn't the whole story but I won't go into that. Great videos Freddie. life is an ever lasting learning experience I find.
Glad you got the Transalp started. You brought back a very old memory to me when you were in the village and filmed a green 1965 Hillman Minx automatic. When I was a kid a neighbour had exactly the same car, possibly even the same year because he only had one leg. The car is long gone as is the neighbour who passed away many years ago.
Modern bikes have a "slipper" clutch which makes them difficult to bump start...... and as others have said ,the quadlock has a micro drain on the battery.
Even when shut off? My wireless unit has and on off button.
Good to have helpful neighbours 😊
Oh Frank what have you done now?! It wasn’t me Betty 😉😂
Look for a nice Kawasaki W650. My battery was dead, had wait a few days to get a new one. No problem, started first time every time on the kick starter.😊
Same bike, same thing happened after fitting the Tom Tom powered mount. Discharge is due to the DC DC voltage stepper cct. Excellent thing the kick start.😊
Quad lock bro. It will pull a trickle voltage from the batt. You need to fit a switch in the quad lock power line to turn it off fully when not in use.
Use the Quad Lock USB Smart Adapter. Turn the switch to "auto". Then it won't drain your battery.
@@LongPondNH oh I didn’t know they did this! I’ll be getting one as I flattened a brand new battery twice because I didn’t disconnect my quad lock. Cheers
I’m sure he has one of those.I seem to remember him fitting it to the Triumph
FYI his Quadlock USB is a dumb socket so isn’t drawing any power if nothing is plugged into it. How could it?
Now if he has the wireless charger fitted (he doesn’t) that would draw power.
@@racheltaylor6578 If it's set to "on", it'll drain the battery.
When you remove the battery on cars or motorcycles, always disconnect the negative cable first. Cheers
And reconnect it last i.e. after the positive.
How often did he have to do it with his Bonnie🤔? Seems to be a slow learner our Freddie... 😉
stop it😄
If Freddie can't break it.....then it's truly unbreakable!!! 😂😂😂
Freddie, the voltage on the charger is probably the voltage being applied by the charger not the zero load voltage of the battery. Batteries work differently to a fuel tank 🙂
Genuine video, showing real-life situations that happened to each and every one of us.
I didn't expect that from a Transalp, honestly... I owned a transalp from 2006. It's been bulletproof despite its age. The new Honda models are still very reliable.
I know QuadLock is a sponsor of the channel, but I do think it might have something to do with the battery drainage. These mounts are amazing, don't get me wrong, but I don't think the built-in tools would drain the battery when the ignition is off.
Cheers!
Pleased it's just the battery and not the bike. Great video never the less. A long thin magnetized screwdriver is always handy to have when fiddling with bikes 😁 Glad you didn't give up on it Freddie
Dale ‘It’s the battery not the bike’ ? Why did the battery not fully charge or drain down? No one knows this yet. Was it a duff battery, which will just drain down again, or was it that the bike wasn’t charging it, because you’ll need to test that to know. A battery charged off the bike won’t tell you anything. Fingers crossed it is just a duff battery or regulator and not the alternator…Possibly an accessory draining it also ?
@@douglasalexander4348 Yes I agree, I was thinking a charge got the bike running rather than a non starting bike due to a mechanical fault. Always a better scenario
@@biker_dale Yes, like replacing a fuse doesn’t cure the fault that caused the fuse to blow. Good riding fella 👍
It sounds like one of your add ons has caused a slight drain down of the battery since you've been back from your tours...😊
Tip about the battery bolt i put microfiber clothes in all the crevices so if you do drop the bolt or the nut it stops this problem i know from experience
I recall you had jerry-rigged a charging cable off the battery and I think that is the source of your battery drain Freddie 🤔…worth noting most Efi bikes are incredibly battery ⚡️ sensitive unlike carb bikes, once you dip below 12 volts they really don’t like it and exasperated by the cold, you’ll be surprised how much lights etc drain modern bikes and I keep all my bikes on battery conditioners 💡 I assume the battery is AGM not Litho? ❄️

I feel your pain Freddy, love that video, no editing out ,we have all been there, so frustrating to watch you loose faith 👍👍🫤🫤
Oh dear Freddie if its not one thing its another, mind you i have to say that most of the issues I've ever had on my various bikes revolve around batteries, so much so that my GoldStar is always connected up to my optimizer when in the garage. Result no probs anymore
When attempting to bump start: if you jump in the seat/bounce in the seat and release the clutch immediately after, then you have a higher chance of success. Your weight will drive the pistons down, helping the engine to turn over. Not suggesting that this would have worked 100%, but it is a more successful way of bumping a bike!
When the rear wheel skids you are in too low a gear. 3rd probably OK.
New bikes are very hard to jump start. The old bikes with carbs were a lot easier.
Your weight drives the pistons down....oh my!
No, your weight momentarily increases the traction on the rear wheel, which might just get one piston up to and over compression without locking the back wheel.
@@richardsimpson3792 Fair enough, but the outcome is the same - a much improved chance of the engine turning over, which is what really matters here!
You're having a laugh aye, drive the pistons down by bouncing on the seat, funniest thing I've ever heard.
Wow!! It took a Harley part to fix a Honda. Isn’t that like the old saying, you meet the nicest people on a Harley 😎
That's why I always use Ultimate chargers / battery maintenance. Don't forget batteries have rest voltage and "in use discharge". A battery could be perfectly "fine" at rest, but completely f...up when discharging. Love the Transalp. Cheers.
I want to thank Paul for saving your bacon 😊👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
It's always fun to watch your video's, even the ones that go wrong for you. Thank you for sharing❤.
Fred. I told you not to put a usb direct on to the battery, you should always put it through a relay or it can flatten your battery or even damage it as a usb draws power continually
A lot of jump box manufacturers recommend leaving the box connected to the battery for like 5 or 10 minutes to let the goodness flow into the vehicle battery before attempting to start.
Don’t think so, that’s not how it works 😢
Id say combination of your quad lock and the tracker Honda no doubt fitted(All new Honda's come with a tracker for Free) is probably working over time in that concrete parking garage trying to acquire a signal
I see a lot of really uncalled for comments below. It is certain that Honda loaned you a bike with a bad battery. Modern bike batteries are good until they aren't - there is no warning, no gradual weakening. They are good until they are not good. That it worked for a couple of weeks before it went bad is irrelevant. Again, it's fortunate that it happened in your own garage and not out on the Yorkshire Dale or some other inconvenient place. I am very disappointed in the many posters below whose unfortunate comments speak volumes about themselves, but nothing about you. I look forward to your next video.
I'm so glad that didn't happen to you out in the middle of the Yorkshires.
Looking forward to seeing Paul's bikes.
In the good ole days, you could switch the headlight off. Too much red tape complicating things. Would've probably started with the lights off.
And the auto cancelling indicators is another farce. They've usually switched off by the time you get to the junction!
Well done Mr Dobbs. A nice winter trip had. Hopefully the sun will be shining a bit for the next one.
👍
I’ve got a Honda NC 750x . I was abroad before and during COVID . Returned after 3,5 years . I couldn’t believe that it started first press of the button , no electrical charging point in my lock up either !
That's how Hondas usually work in my experience in contrast to Suzukis and KTMs 😄
But i must admit the Transalp battery looks to small to me
@@dmitrijr7065 Suzukis are bulletproof in my experience, not so much KTM. My Suz sat all of Dec and January and started up no problem last week.
@@flippy66 They are but all 3 Suzukis that i knew the owners of (GSXR-1000, VS750, SV650S) had too small batteries and never made it through a winter without recharging.
2 months are not a challenge, my KTM 620 stood for 3 months and also started right up
I couldn't believe that either! Doubt it's down to being a Honda, must just be a darn good battery, a miracle battery even!
Any bike with a simple digital clock (which the NC750X has) will run a battery down over time. Three and a half years is a damn long time (30,660 hours to be exact). At around 10mA (for the clock), that's a total drain of a little over 30Ah over 3.5 years. A typical motorbike battery is between 12Ah and 20Ah, with the NC750X using a YTZ14S battery which is a very decent 20Ah... interesting how you could get 30Ah out of a 20Ah battery 🤔
Some years ago I found a 40 year old Villiers 250 trials bike in my local canal. Rusted to hell and covered in slime and silt, would you believe that the f'ing headlight was _still on!!!_ After 4 decades in the cut!!! 😂
Ok, lets make a deal, you reduce your 3.5 years to between 8 months and 1 year.....and I'll.... _switch the headlight off!_ 👍😂
I think Freddie’s rock star presence has this affect on the bikes. They start blushing and pass out. More than likely though I suspect they play dead to avoid being dragged in swamps.
Freddie, you remind me of my son he can break anything I often sing the Mothers Do Have Them theme when the next event occurs.
Joking aside if the battery was down on voltage there might be another problem that is either draining the battery or preventing charge.
Your videos are great entertainment and full of mixed content, not just about motorcycles.
When bump starting a bike its better to run alongside it and jump on the seat as you let the clutch out. That stops the rear wheel losing traction.
Westerham is a lovely town, if we are on the bikes we use the A25 rather than the M25 and always stop there for a coffee.

Volts under load is different to the measured volts on the charger
Had the same on my bike I left for a week. Anything below 11v it won’t crank.
Now it’s in life support all the time after a new battery
If the battery is that low this suggest that one cell is gone. New battery required.
Oh dear... I know you say you're incompetent, i just didn't think it was this much. 😂. Enjoy the ride ...😊
Paul deserves a free pint
You need at least 12.5v to start a bike...especially a larger capacity twin or triple. If your battery reads below 12v, it's flat. You should have checked the voltage with the bike running, it should read between 13.5v and 14.5v depending on engine revs, anything outside this and you have a charging and/or battery problem.
Sorry about your battery issues Freddie. Really enjoying seeing all these lovely English towns. Much love from Cape Town 🇿🇦
With an adventur bike, everything is always an adventur...😅✌️
Call ItchyBoots!
I had the same problem on a new BMW 1150GS in 2003, it was a dead cell, the warranty replacement lasted until 2008, I then fitted an Odyssey battery which is still on the bike today after 16 years and 50,000 miles, It's no reflection on Honda or the bike it could happen to any make or model. On a positive note it's all usefull experience .
13:18 just a random tip, if you head to a near by motorcycle shop they tend to keep the screws and nuts off old batteries for this exact reason.
When I replace a battery the old nuts and bolts go in a special jar for future use. Saved me many times since my small motor skills are terrible!
On the flip side Freddie, you've still got the nattiest tool-roll in Greater London ;-)
That's very frustrating Freddie. Been there myself. As others have commented it was probably your quadlock usb cable drawing a small current. I fitted a relay to my bike to disconnect my usb cable when the ignition was off. The voltage shown on the dash will reflect that headlights etc are pulling down the voltage.
Feel for you dude! Glad you got it sorted 🙌😊
Ground cable comes off first an gos on last. An I mean ground, not negative. They are usually the same thing, but not always. A positive ground car, you still need to take the ground off first an put it on last even though that is the positive on them. The point is to not have any connection from the battery to the metal body structure any time a wrench is touching opposing side of the battery.
It's like watching Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. There's even a 'Betty'. 🙃
Way to go Paul!
Technically you can only measure the Voltage of a battery accurately if it has been dormant (not charging or discharging) for 24 hrs approx. But in reality you will obtain a reasonably accurate result after 1/2 hours dormant.
A Healtech Thunderbox is one of the best accessories on any bike. The Bonneville should get one as a priority during it's makeover work. Look into it Freddie, £85 is well worth it for peace of mind about power drains from things left connected to your bikes.
I 2nd that the thunderbox is worth every penny
Freddie, when you put your battery on charge you are looking at the charge rate which will start at 12 volts and slowly rise to 14.5 volts,
To test the battery voltage you should use a multimeter not your charger,
As for loosing screws, go to a pound shop and get yourself a telescopic magnet a very handy tool to own and helps with stress levels😂
Keep up the good work. Roy Bowden

Sorry freddy, i did chuckle a bit. We've all been there at some point. Drained my battery on my 1200 daytona years ago with a permanent live from the battery to a single switch for heated grips😬🙄
I feel your pain Freddie. Dropping a screw into the bike is very relatable. I think I’m fairly capable in regard to working on cars. Working on motorcycles seems to be a completely different animal. I pretty much just stick to doing my own oil changes and modifications on my bike.
I'd say you're just about ready for a round the world trip on the Transalp!
The clue is in the name. Bump start. You should bump it as you release the clutch to put more weight through the rear and prevent slipping, thus the engine will turn over
The chap that helped then let Freedie lose with the tools 😂 Freddie old boy, this was entertaining buddy.
Feel for you …. Well done for sharing. Makes me wonder if the battery bolts were done up properly after the powered quad lock was put on, might have been working their way loose? Shame you didn’t check the charging voltage on the bikes lcd after you got it going… would have been a good test to rule that out.
Get yourself an extendable magnetic stick- invaluable for retrieving metal debris from nooks and crannies on the bike.
Even professionals do that ! ( me) Also It just happened to me ,,, My old iron barrelled Enfield , daily driver ...it snowed and the temp killed the battery Bike started but was backfiring and carrying on ,,, checked points ,,, wiring etc ... battery at fault ... I will check it in a min !
I live on the eastern edge of the Surrey hills, this video shows some great stuff about the area, even the slog up the M23 to London 😂, truly though, I love south eastern England for exploring in a classic car (and on my learner bike 😂)
Go to a bike shop for the terminal bolts. It's the only place that will have them. I did this two years ago in Portugal. A bike shop was the only solution. Nick
The first thing is turn the headlight off when you try and start it ,put the jump starter on it and boost the battery for 5 mins or so before you try and start it .good luck with it
You can’t turn the headlights off, they automatically come on with the ignition.
That's bad isn't it ,

Yeah i fitted a in-line relay in the head light unit on my triumph bonnie, £20. Just to avoid this issue😁. Keeps main headlight off until you flash pass button or switch high beam on.
Fredster, same as people before me, I've started my bike in 4th gear for 2 months every day twice a day going to and from work, it just start easy as, I was 55Kg and the bike 150Kg....until I had enough money to pay for a new "starter sprag clutch" 😁
Fredster, my bikes if not in Full lock and the key turned to Lock and pulled out, will still pull power from the battery, even if it's on OFF and keys pulled out , the bikes still draw a small amount from the battery, only full lock can stop it.🤷♂
Almost a Basil Fawlty moment Freddie. Well done Paul. Fred, I am a new rider and signed up for a motorcycle maintenance course. So far, learned the basics and a good learning base. Might be an idea ?..
clever advert for the tool roll 🤣 Im joking Freddie ;) see you in the next one
Freddie…you need an Oxford oximiser 3X advanced battery management system! I keep my T120 on charge throughout the winter and it has my battery in top condition….only problem you may have is being able to plug it in where you leave your bike!
£65 well spent and your bike will always start..
Freddie your battery charger reads 12 or more ( should be up to 14) because it is PLUGGED IN. It is reading CHARGING voltage my friend.
It happens….thats how we learn, magnetic retrieval tool and fleece dusters can save a lot of frustration but I still can’t fit my Multistrada upper fairing properly, it’s a known issue, apparently there’s a knack🤣👍
A full battery is 13.2 volts.......anything under about 12.5-6. Is flat 😢.....a knackered battery can happen to any brand 👍
No no. A fully charged 12 volt battery is fully charged at 12.5volts. At 11.1 volts, that is seriously discharged!
13.2 would be charging voltage territory and surface charge after charging/riding. Turn the lights on for 30 secs and full charge would be 12.5-12.7ish… at about 10.5 volts or very near your indication is you have a failed battery cell and you would need a car plug in booster to fire it but most likely need a replacement battery…
Keep us updated, this is important, we need to know why and what and what is Honda response
Freddie all modern bike pull power even when stood, they all need a battery maintainer attached as like my Pan America draws around 0.45Ah so the battery can be below starting power within 2 days easily!
Hi. My new bmw GS battery would only start once initially- it didn’t have enough power to be turned off and then started again, before being ridden! New battery had to be installed by bmw - my bike was 8 months old and 3000 miles. Dealer said wasn’t the first time a new battery had dead cells. Not their fault, it would be the battery manufacturer.
Two possibilities here. 1. Old and discharged battery with bad cell which is dying or 2. Failing charging system (wiring or alternator/regulator). Second is very unlikely on a new bike especially Honda. Somebody mentioned this below but to test if the charging system is ok measure with multimeter while the bike is running. It should show 13.2-14.5V at ~2000RPMs. Starting and shutting off or riding the bike short distances with the lights on can kill the battery but again....on a new bike I don't know.
