Heck yeah. Illumina deserves the recognition 100%. Hes been running this game for years now. Just last year i remember seeing his one vid get half a mill views and thinking he was big then. Now hes got how many millions of views! It's great! Alberta, Canada represent!

There is one more use of F3 that you left out. In the end, players will usually enable hitboxes with F3+B to be able to one cycle with more precision.
There's also the 9,9 coords for treasure chests, F3+G for finding the stronghold chunk, and 4,4 cords for stronghold generation origin
@@shawnm4018 Yes, this is true. I just forgot to say it because it wasn't exactly relevant in illumina's run.
@@pikaJrl Yeah, I know you know Mr. Twitch Speedrunner Mod :) Its the general population that maybe doesn't realize HOW useful F3 is at all stages of the run. I'm floored by Illumina's record, so much so that I'm starting to feel the categories should be split. Sad it was beaten so quickly
@@shawnm4018 Unfortunately, it was pretty inevitable that it was gonna be beaten soon, it was just a matter of who was gonna do it.
@@shawnm4018 Illumina can actually still do 4,4 sometimes since he knows what direction he's facing and that the eye points to 8,8.
the dry humor in this episode regarding being a full time Minecraft channel and trying to be the first to reach 1 billion subs is incredibly funny
agreed, need more of it
Yeah I haven’t been watching Karl for that long and I wasn’t expecting to hear some sarcasm coming from him at all lol
honestly I'm gullible so I believed it for a second and was ready to leave the planet
All that's missing is the obligatory stats screen showing extremely good subscription values but saying something like "only 60% of my viewers are subscribed, so if you want me to have enough food to eat tomorrow, please subscribe"
Karl never jokes in these videos so yeah it was a pleasant surprise
The 'no F3' run was way more impressive. It reminds me of the SummoningSalt SMB2 world record progression video, where runners started integrating glitches into their runs to save time, brought that time down - and then the long standing glitch record was shattered by a runner in a completely glitch-free run. Finding success while taking the hard way will always be more impressive.
well but in this case using no f3 also meant relying more on luck which is less impressive for me
@@FabledStone But the F3 speedrun was only as fast as it was _entirely_ because of luck. He was behind, and then got insanely lucky.
@@RevyaAeinsett veah i know thats not my point, I just like it less to rely on even more luck in the first place
link for summoning salts vid? i cant see to find it
@@RevyaAeinsett no, the F3 run had a similar time out of the nether despite iluminas run having way more luck in the early game (having enough obsidian to make the nether portal from the village and 6/7 blaze drops), while twolettersname run had way less luck in the early game but took the most potential out of the seed he got
Having to choose, Illumina's no F3 speedrun is the most impressive since there he's at least 60 places ahead the 2nd No F3 runner (at the time this video was made)
im pretty sure 2nd place no f3 was on hardcore so that's something in itself
@@saucemonster7137 At this point, when timings are so tight, hardcore doesn't change anything really. If you die, you usually always reset anyway because it's such a huge time loss.
But it's definitely adding more OG style points.
@@_Killkor hardcore mobs do more damage, damage = food
@@saucemonster7137 Yeah, I was thinking that, but honestly most speedrunners are pretty good at avoiding mobs (and are good at PvE). Then again, we have blaze spawner. You can block their fire with fire res, but they can still melee you. Mobs in strongholds can also pose a great danger on Hard/Hardcore. So I admit, you're right there.
But besides mob increased DMG (and thus potentially increased food consumption), there's nothing much else hindering you on hardcore.
oddly based on that vid, illumina isnt used to f3ing while speedrunning,
also he is cursed with bieng the most unluckiest/luckiest guy

The diss on Gametheory is so great! For those of you that don’t know. The creator of the channel, matpat, says in one of his newer videos that basically it doesn’t matter if dream cheated because Minecraft is just a luck game anyways and speed-running is pointless.
@@Drjones_ That video was the final straw to make me unsubscribe from his channel. I never thought I'd see such limp clickbait degenerate into such incoherent rambling. He wanted to cash in on a clickbait controversy and then straddle the fence like nobody would notice. I lost any respect I had left for him and I'm done.

For me, it was the _Can Magneto stop a bullet_ video. He prattles on and on about all the different types of magnetism, like ferromagnetism and paramagnetism, and how they're relevant to copper and lead in a static magnetic field, but completely misses how magnetic induction and Lenz's Law would come into play when you have conductive loops encountering changing magnetic fields.
I didn't understand the diss, thank you for explaining. I don't like Matpat and his channel, but Minecraft is heavily RNG based and speedrunning this type of game seems pointless. But Dream cheated and there's no excuse to that.
@@loudradialem5233 i thought so too, there are so many luck factors I cant believe people would want to speedrun it, but the replays of the good runs are highly entertaining to watch especially if you play minecraft
Randomized speedrunning is all about perseverance. If you actually want to have a pure-skill experience, do set seed. His analysis has no weight.
Out of all people I’m so happy Illumina got it, such an OG and chill guy
Wait. I don't follow these too closely but *no F3* isn't it's own category? Or is it since they show when F3 is used?
They are combined
Technically F3 doesn't save any time, it just drastically reduces the amount of luck you need. In fact, it would be faster to not use F3 and get perfect luck than it would be to use F3. So there's no real reason to make it its own category.
It is not a separate category on the leaderboards. If it were Illumina would be uncontested for all of the records in that category.
Judging by the rankings shown in the video, I think that the community recognises running without it is a factor to take note of while evaluating the speedrun, yet due to its popularity not something that warrants being reflected on every category by splitting every single one of them up. It does add difficulty, but what is the point if most people aren't as interested in running it that way?
I think that if Illumina keeps up setting records while going F3-less while the general trend towards better understandinging the terrain code increases, it could very well become its own category. It is nice to go fast, but where is the glory when someone else can achieve the same things without relying on a crutch? At the highest level of gameplay,, F3 basically has usefulness resembling that of a wallhack that tells you where to go... but it is _not_ intended as a gameplay mechanic, but as an aid for people who run into technical issues. No speedrun that I know of allows the use of cheat codes (because hey, that's not skill!) even when they have categories that recognise the distinction between glitchless and major glitches.
Other than the crutch it is to most casual players who try to visit friends and align portals, F3's value to speedrunners lies in reducing the impact of luck: spawning closer in the overworld near strongholds and finding the closest spot for a bastion are the obvious ones in this video. But Illumina shows that the block-breaking trick can account for the latter, and by proxy likely also to some degree for the former. So now it is simply a matter of waiting for other players to finally admit that they are playing with training wheels on. If just a handful of top-tier runners start running without F3, the rest will probably follow suit relatively quickly.
@@Aviertje Yeah I don't see how it would be different than using console commands in another game to get info or something. It is not designed as a gameplay mechanic to utilize, so I think the categories should be separate, especially after what Ilumina has done here.
While honoring a game's speed run, he also takes the piss out of said game's trends: Subscribers and being a dedicated channel to that game. Add to that the legendary undercurrent of sarcasm in his voice, and we have ourselves a video

So basically, if Dream had waited a couple months (or, y'know, communicate with the speedrunning community), he wouldn't have a reason to cheat. Really shows how patience can be a virtue. All Dream had to do was do runs legitimately, one month after and here we are.
-- Less RNG
-- Bartering less and less important
-- More diverse methods to finish the run, all with potential good outcomes
It's honestly a shame because he could have been a really good contender and definitely welcomed these revelations.
Slightly misleading, there’s the same amount of rng it’s just better understood which makes it less impactful to the average run and bastion strats exist for the sake of being able to do more bartering quicker.
It’s also fairly likely that without the dream situation many of the new strats and understanding of the major rng elements wouldn’t have come out as quickly, seeing as a lot of people got fired up to prove his cheating wasn’t “justified” (can’t think of a better word at the moment) by the state of rng in the game in 1.16+
No, it’s less RNG, because using bastions we can abuse gold blocks to get enough batters to eliminate the risk.
Rng is the same, the numbers inside the game are the same, the probabilities changed cuz the numbers outside the game changed due new methods of find bastions and other things, dunno if you understand my point cuz I m not that good in english to explain my point in a good way
@@MightyCaesar37 No, it is literally less RNG. Also I highly doubt Dream cheating influenced people creating the new strats.
@@MightyCaesar37 No it's less RNG, well, alright, the mathematician side of me is kicking in. It sort of depends on how you want to define RNG. In a strict definition, obviously the new strategies didn't change the probabilities, it didn't increase say Blaze Rod drops to 50% or Pearl bartering hits to 15%. Nowadays RNG (random number generator) is synonymous with words such as reliability, randomness (wrongly defined!), and most importantly chances. Bastions allow players to access a reliable supply of gold ingots, far more trades can be done. F3 allows players to optimise restarting, this means the chances are changed greatly as more successful runs can be executed optimally.
Only the outcome of pearls matter, this is why the chances changed. I want for example 12 pearls. What's better? 10 trades or 25, or 35? Probability of a pearl barter is the same throughout, but of course more trades means a better shot at "I want 12". Extra pearls are useful too. Maybe I got something wrong, I don't play the game much and I only loosely follow speedrunning. This is based on my limited knowledge as an outsider.
Oh and no, even with ridiculous unfavourable RNG, his cheating isn't justified. That's like saying I'm justified to cheat in a marathon because I'm fat and put at a disadvantage. No, I can either choose to improve my condition or not participate, or just do the marathon casually under a non-competitive setting.
This is a crazy run, and without using F3 too? Honestly the dedication it must've taken to get that time without one of the most valuable speedrunning tools, absolute madman.
Wellllllll the newest record (12:12), is absolutely insane when it comes straight skill and new strats. Although the no f3 is impressive, imo the fact that the 12:12 record shaved over 1:30 off the previous record really is groundbreaking, and shows how fast runs can really be.
to be fair illumina’s could’ve been easily sub 10 if he’d spawned close to the stronghold, its not like he was less skilled or anything
it was also pretty insane yeah, the luck displayed on these two runs are just that different
@@ckdgyp9149 sub 10 is a slight stretch, even if he had a perfect blind it would have probably been slightly above 12 mins. I’m pretty sure that other runners have tried a normal blind on his seed (by normal blind I mean blinding at the regular distance in the nether), and the stronghold was still about 1000 blocks out, so regardless with if he used f3 or not the blind would still be pretty bad. I’m not trying to diss illumina or anything, he’s an insane runner but his seed was not sub 12 or probably sub 13 - able without knowing the exact cords to blind at.

"Knowledge of the game is going to be a far more powerful tool than mere luck itself." Diablo 2, is very much in a similar situation for some time now. For a game heavily known for its' RNG, the speedrunning community behind it has done so much detective work on map generating and a few relatively consistent item drops (most notably rune words). People have been able to pinpoint the direction of an exit / next floor using entrance, waypoint, or key tiles of the map, or a crazier example, correlating the stony field direction to which side the Kurast Bazaar entrance is located. If you are uninformed on how to navigate maps and how to shop or work with what you've obtained, not even the craziest of gear drops will net you a world record.
Of course, less of this would be discovered let alone possible without a community to back it up. The larger a community becomes in any game, often more and more discoveries come to light. With how much Minecraft has exploded in the speedrunning scene, I'm sure it will only be a matter of time before something more incredible is exposed.
Incredible content as always Karl! Much respect.
hold up, people speedrun diablo 2?
thank you for this new rabbit hole to dive into
love seeing this community grow with lots of clips of great mc speedrunners awesome video
Really enjoying the coverage of these new speedruns, thanks for the videos.
Illumina's run is groundbreakingly crazy. He's been there from the start of Minecraft speedrunning and is truly the GOAT
Illumina is the best minecraft speedruner in my opinion he's consistently set world records in the past
Omg minecraft speedrunning is out of control these days, makes me so happy to see how far its come, ive been following minecraft speedruns since about 2014.
I'm really happy you are covering more games,
It is really interesting to know how the speed run mechanics for other games work! Thank you Karl!!
Kinda hard to ignore Minecraft now. So sensible idea.
And then 1.17 comes along and everyone has to go back to the drawing board.
Nope, they'll just not speedrun 1.17
@@tomojr3674 Possible. But, considering how massive 1.17 is, I won't be surprised if 1.17 became its own category.
@@nogoat u know that 1.16.2 or higher is bad for speedrunning since trading with piglins to get pearls is alot harder and time consuming
@@nogoat so 1.17 is bad for speedrunning since there is not alot of stuff affecting the speedrun
@@luigiweegee7152 Yes I do know about 1.16.2
Yes. Its understandable
Being called an absolute legend never gets old ☺️
I'm always so impressed with how thorough your videos are!! This is awesome!
"and i WILL see you in the next video."
Loving that confidence, yes you will. Keep it up.
Lena Raines music is so brilliant. Such a good fit for your videos 👌🏽
This is 100% my favourite Minecraft dedicated channel.
The moment i finished Illumina's Speedrun video You're the one that comes up on my mind first
Great job again with video-editing and narrating the content. You are an absolute legend, Karl !
Karl: Hello you absolute legends
*suicide rates drop to zero*
1:33 Shots fired, man.
You make very good quality content, very nice analysis, so proud of illumina
The quality of your vids are great. They way there put together is sooo satisfying and entertaining.
2 videos of such high quality in a WEEK?!?! LEGEND!
“Officially a full-time Minecraft channel”
ok mr doom & goldeneye man
I've known that Illumina's a legend in minecraft speedrunning, but never really understood to what extent till I saw his speedruns. Huge kudos to that man.
This also makes that MCC Parkour Tag training Ludwig had against Technoblade, Illumina and Fruitberries 1000% funnier
Illumina is impressive getting a WR without F3 what a madman! But TwoLetterName's WR is more enjoyable to watch. Because he does what everyone does but does it good. Watching the stars align for him and him executing every move near-perfect is so satisfying to see. Finally a 1.16.1 WR looks like it's played by a human after Couriway's WR and doesn't have a major time loss in it.
*F3 key exists*
Illumina: I’m about to end this whole man’s career
SUPRISE UPLOAD POG
This guy do math about Minecraft is better than my math about simple things I forgot
I love this, literally no one but Illumina deserves this, he's been at it for years and has always been a good guy!
It's great to see the minecraft speedrunning scene get more and more recognised over the years
"you can do the math on those odds"
Why must you hurt me in this way
[sigh]
Here we go again, play the song guys.
[cue LEMMiNO - Cipher]
@@Merluch It's the song that played in the video originally accusing Dream of cheating. Just look it up on TH-cam.
It's so cool how he has a little segment that explain stuff assuming people don't know! I don't speedrun this game but now I understand what's going on when watching one, if this dude was my teacher at school I'd be at NASA today
I get so excited everytime Karl drops a video. I get myself some popcorn, stream it on the TV and I'm settled. Much love Karl
Illumina is the best speed runner of all time in my opinion, he’s actually crazy
Bit of an exaggeration..
He is good, but defo not the best of all time
@@Noah-lj2sg I think it is illumina and tarokichi tbh
Nah hes the father of minecraft speedrunning
Btw everyone I mean the best for Minecraft
6:52
Just did the math, it's a 6.25% chance of getting that luck.
Reasonable chance. Idk if ur accusing him lol
@@roman-ni9ew Of course I'm not accusing him, on average 1 out of every 16 speedrun attempts will have that luck, it's not like Dream's speedrun with 1 in 113 billion blaze rod luck.
Edit: Even if he got all 7 rods it would have been a 1 in 128 chance, which while lucky, isn't super suspicious.
It isn't suspicious enough to accuse him of cheating unless he's getting that luck consistently multiple streams in a row.
I agree with Karl. With all the explanations, I agree that the "no F3" run is special and, despite being much slower, is extremely impressive.
I love it when Carl dryly throws shade at multiple things in the process of making a serious video.
