27... kilts. Okay. I agree that the more kilts you own breaks down those formality dividers. You still have that "this one looks nicer, so is more formal" vibe, but it's less strict.
I do the same thing - nicer wool kilt for more formal or “special” occasions and a utility kilt for wearing to work or just because I want to wear a kilt.
I’m still building my collection. I’ve worn my Innes red for both formal event and 80s wave dance night. It’s my only wool kilt at moment. I’ll likely wear Innes Hunting green for upcoming Christmas dance night. My Polaris seems to be more of go to for casual or comicons, so far.
As a general rule, I reserve the really nice wool one for the very most formal occasions. In the middle, I have a couple of "good but not first tier" kilts for things like Highland festivals or ren faires (where they may get a bit of knocking-around). Then, I have a couple of utility kilts that I wear for everyday stuff whenever the mood strikes me. So, I guess I'm with Eric -- I categorize them mainly by formality/cost.
Since I don't have that many kilts, it's never a huge problem deciding which to wear, but what I wear with it and how I coordinate my things all depend on TPO (time, place, occasion) and that usually settles everything. It's all pretty simple, but It does take a few minutes to come up with things. Till covie, it's always been a band uniform, but I'm free to do my own thing. I don't belabor it, but if something's not quite right, I fix it before I leave the house!
I categorize or separate the kilts in my collection into three categories: Kilts, utilikilts and my Clan Lamont kilts (One is Ancient and the other Modern)
36 kilts and counting. Generally speaking my utility kilts are for most anytime except 'dressy' occasions while traditional kilts are good for both dressing up or going casual. just depends on how I'm feeling at the moment.
For the sake of curiosity, does how “busy” a tartan is affect the formality? I personally only have one kilt so the question answers itself for me, but I just wanna hear what y’all think.

But most events don't demand _that_ level o' storage, in which case I'd get by with a Five-Yard in whatever Tartan is least likely to ignite, with at most a Semi-Dress _Sporran_ on a strap and a Belt with American Eagle buckle, large and small pouches and a bottle holster.
AH, buy more kilts! USA kilts needs a frequent flyer punch card of sorts. Buy three kilts the fourth one is free! That'll help add to the collections of EVERYONE! If anyone is wondering, yes, I'd just purchased my third kilt from USA Kilts and well we can all do the math here.

I'm up to 10 now, so I have favorites for different types of activities, weather conditions, etc.

I only have my dads kilt that I got when he died, I am saving up to get more!
Which one is still dirty from the last time I wore it and still don't need to clean yet.
