    Harpo was awesome very talented. I love him most of all. The Marx brothers were hilarious but when they performed solo Harpo was the best of the 3. There will never be another Marx brothers in our lifetime.

    Thanx so so so very much, Hotun, for sharing this little gem!
    I'm a long, long time Harpo fan, and I love this clip!
    RIP, Mr Marx. Thanx for the magic, music, and memories.
    Harpo forever!

    Pretty sure it said in his biography that he rigged his clarinet with a hidden lever, so he could play it normally ... and then by pressing the switch, bubbles would come out.
    He probably attached the bubble maker inside the end of the clarinet - with the lever directing the flow of air for each purpose - to make music or make bubbles.

    Before there was Gallagher, LONG before there was Carrot Top or the Amazing Jonathan, there was Harpo. The true father of the prop comics

    It's Berle's fault for having the band start playing loud! Don't blame Harpo!

  • @Lampshade51
    @Lampshade51 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Harpo was 71 here and he still had it.
    Note that when he starts blowing the bubbles, the breeze in the studio is blowing the wrong way, so he walks behind Berle to the other side.
    Originally done on color videotape. Did it survive? This is a videotape, but it is in black and white.

    Yah for Harpo! He plays a clarinet in Coconuts and Monkey Business but not very well. He's been practicing and gotten better by 1959.

    I grew up watching Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello and the 3 Stooges, and I love all of them. However, I think the Marx Brothers beat all of those guys. : )

    • @tenhirankei
      @tenhirankei 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't know if "the Marx Brothers beat all those guys", but I agree 100+% about the rest. All I need to hear is "Who's on First", fill in the rest and I can have a great laugh. It's even better when someone else can reply to your roster for 1st, 2nd and 3rd bases with "Who's on First?"

      Speaking seriously, of course, it is impossible to compare them all as they each have their unique strengths and talents. Having said that, The Freres Marx were awesome on a level all their own, and my personal favorites.

      Important differences with the Marx Brothers -
      They really were brothers
      They worked on stage together for years polishing their act before going into the movies
      Their mother had them take music lessons with Harpo and Chico becoming quite accomplished

    How did this work? Was it a clarinet that could be played and blow bubbles, too? Or is it only a bubble maker, and Harpo's syncing to another player?

    Milton Berle isn't exactly a favorite of mine, he sometimes looked physically abusive and even unrespectful but have to admit that otherwise he was a fine comedian and this time seemed thrilled to have the 1-derful and uniquely talented Harpo Marx as his guest, the act was so funny !!! 😂

    didn’t like Milton Berle and here is one example of why Harpo is the guest star, but guess who hogs the stage :P something Jack Benny, Dinah Shore, or Flip Wilson, etc. would never do!! 😾😮
