WTF. That’s so interesting. If you were listening to Olivia’s version: it’s empowering! Female pleasure! What it actually shows: assault and controlling women. That’s a BIG difference 😳 This movie looked so good in the trailer. I can’t believe the movie is so weird. What a let down.
The movie isn't a let down. You should really go and watch it and not be disappointed because of one review. I was really surprised by the plot twist and you are glued to the screen in the cinema. Very good.
@Emily Blossom yes. Olivia made it seem like some kind of female empowerment but with the reality of the movie, it is actually degrading for women. It’s sad that she hyped up those scenes like it was some good thing
These scenes happen after she touches the glass wall at the center if I remember correctly. Which is where she momentarily becomes concious again before being put back under. I think because she subconsciously knew she was trapped both in real life and the utopia world she felt claustrophobic and suffocated
I personally really liked this movie! And I thought Harry did a lot better than expected and than what the critics are saying (though Shia would have knocked that role out of the park). All these things you mention are exactly a metaphor for what you’re explaining the film to be about: women being trapped in an incel world. Yes there are some loose ends, but overall I think the message was displayed very well and although I figured out the world was fake a bit before the reveal, I did not catch the twist that Alice was put there without consent which made the twist even better in my opinion. Gemmas character definitely deserved more attention/explanation but like a previous comment said, you can kind of infer she is really the brains behind Frank and was waiting for her moment to take over, which I also loved. I also didn’t think the sex scene at Frank’s was SA, but more so Alice being worried about getting caught in the act not necessarily that she didn’t want to do the act, but I could see how someone would find it triggering and maybe it was meant to be! I just didn’t see it that way. Overall I really liked it and I felt there were many messages throughout that conveyed the incel podcast life currently picking up in present day: men wanting to go back to the 50s where women stayed home instead of being surgeons and money makers. Control control control!! And another comment also eluded to this: her getting stuck in the glass and wrapped the cellophane around her head was a metaphor for her being trapped there but also possibly her subconscious realizing she’s in a fake world which is causing her to feel trapped (like when you are sleeping and realize you’re in a dream and struggle to wake up..brilliant!) I’d give the movie a solid 7/10 maybe even an 8. Definitely one I need to watch again. Thanks for your review!
Woah you are so right about the weird dynamic of female pleasure within the confines of the male dominant space. It doesn't add up with everything else in the world. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
EDIT: 1. many of you have pointed out that Alice is a doctor, not a nurse :) thank you! 2. hfejrkrnf I cannot believe I didn't catch this earlier but I misspoke at the end of the video about the rotten tomatoes score. The percentage isn't the actual rating and I worded it as such. When I say I wouldn't give the movie a 33% and that I would give it a 55%, I meant that I don't think it DESERVES a 33% and that I would've expected it to be at 55%. I know how rotten tomatoes works it was just a faux pas I didn't catch because I edited this at 2am so I AM SORRY :")
Yeah been waiting for this since seeing the trailer. Love everything Florence does lol. He'll Yeah this gonna be awesome. Story looks intriguing lol. Florence gonna be amazing lol.
the movie is basically stepford wives meets the matrix. the movie isnt complicated. anyone who is remotely a sci-fi fan will get it and can fill in the gaps. the husband is a bitter loser, who is jealous of his doctor wife. so he puts them in this simulation so she can be a housewife and he can feel like a "man". the strange stuff she sees is the simulation cracking.. she figures it out and escapes. kills the husband for kidnapping and raping her mind. the end
Starting out: I will give this movie a 6.5 specifically for a certain detail in the twist. Spoilers Ahead if you haven’t seen the movie. Honestly, I found this movie pretty triggering. Not for the SA or the attempt that I did find kind of unsettling. But more so because of the gaslighting. As someone from an emotionally abus!ve relationship, it was definitely hard especially towards the end to see everyone but definitely Jack gaslighting Alice. It reminded me of my own experience and honestly brought me to tears. But the reason I give this a 6.5 is because I just assumed it was going to be much worse. But there are some things I was able to infer with the plastic wrap and “earthquakes”. The only thing I didn’t understand was the airplane? I’m hoping maybe someone can figure that out because I couldn’t. But I did start to pick up that by harming herself, Alice was starting to “wake up” like in the bathroom, the window, and in kitchen. Why? I don’t know yet. Although the biggest reason its a 6.5 is because of how the plot twist was linked to an incel/alpha male podcast but more specifically because those have become much more prominent in 2022 specifically with Andrew. I kind of thought that was slightly brilliant but only because there’s absolutely no way they would have known alpha male/ manosphere podcasts would have been on the rise this year. Also as for Harry Styles acting, I saw him in Dunkirk and Eternals and while he wasn’t very strong in either of those I actually liked his more emotional scenes in this film. At least with the car scene. He portrayed his emotion of fear, anger, and heartbreak incredibly well. I love watching movies to critically analyze them and I’m sure more people will critique as well. I thought this movie definitely had more potential; the same if not better to how I feel about Multiverse of Madness. But because I thought it was going to be so bad, I actually found myself enjoying it.
I agree about Harry....I think he was actually very good. For example....I forgot I was watching the biggest pop star on the planet. That in and of itself was a big achievement 👏
From your description, it sounds like the movie's plot was heavily inspired by Stepford Wives movie starring Glenn Close and just failed in delivery, which is a shame. Stepford Wives was a great movie.
I thought the film was visually stunning and definetely keep you at the edge of you're seat .however some elements were undevelopped including all the characters except Florence Pugh i feel like the relationship beetwen Gemma chan and Chris pine characters needed to be shown more especially to understand Gemma chan characters motives. I wish they would’ve given her more screen time and developed her character a bit better ;( I thought the movie was an interesting concept, thought not super unique. I was really looking forward to it from the trailer and was ignoring the drama, but I feel like the interviews with Olivia saying that its intimate scenes were centered on female pleasure were disingenuous at best. Just found your channel and subbed. Was excited for this too, but the drama and my desire to no support Warner Discovery at the moment kinda yanked it. I did see a leaked clip online with Harry yelling and I swear, I heard him say “I gave you all of this ice”. Was it the fact it was a CAM recording, who knows.
