Why would you even dare metal detect that area? That is considered sacred ground where men had their final moments in life? I would highly recommend leaving that area alone with a metal detector! It's honestly like metal detecting the Titanic site it's desecrating a grave site in my opinion. I understand keeping these men's stories alive for history but digging up the plane parts and wreckage is something different.

What a great episode! These youngsters were from all over the US and gave their lives in defense of this great country. Also, the anecdotal stories that are part of this incident make it so very personal. God Bless their families.
As, always, JD, an outstanding job on this B-17 story, which I have a special interest in, because my Dad flew 35 missions in them. The sacrifices that the Greatest Generation gave, should always be told, and never forgotten.

This story never needs to die with time. These pilots gave everything to keep everyone else safe. When he said that part about the pilot waving back at the school boy it really touched me and I'm definitely going to make it a point to go out to the site and pay my respects!
Great video again sir. We had a similar incident near Belfast, northern ireland when a b-17 collided with cave hill , belfast . My granny remembered it was a significant event for all who saw it or lived near. RIP to all those true heroes who gave all for our freedom.

Simply incredible. I saw your last video about the local museum. I went to mine and was so excited. So much history and heritage in my small town that I had no idea of!
I can't believe how similar this story is to my own in my family. My uncle Edward was killed in a B-17 while on a training exercise in Montana in August of 1943. He was only 20 years old. My dad was a boy of 11 years and never forgot his big brother. In 1998 my dad visited the crash site where the B-17 in a thunderstorm went down. While walking in the crater picking up airplane pieces he found his brother's dog tag. This prompted my dad to begin researching all the men who died in that crash and he found family members. Years later he had a monument made with contributions from family members and friends and it was shipped to Jordan Montana where it stands today. I was there for the dedication in 2010. My uncle was an excellent artist and on the front of the monument with all the young men's names is a drawing of a B-17 that my uncle drew and sent home in a letter to his parents. My dad died in 2020 of covid and he's missed every single day. He would have been so interested in this story of these young men that lost their lives tragically during WWII, so much like his beloved brother. Great channel..please continue with the awesome content.

That whole story is very moving, knowing these guys were trained and ready to face bullets and flak over Europe and Germany. That never got that chance to help their fellow man. But they have done more than they knew. Just signing up to go to war was enough. And that’s why the whole tribute J.D is right to have on film now. In 1962 a B-52 crashed on elephant mountain near Greenville Maine. My grandfather ran a bulldozer to build a road to get to the crash site. There is still a lot of wreckage there. Not long ago they found a seat! You never know when or where you’ll find relics. A shame there isn’t a memorial like this for the flyers that died there on that cold winter night.
Another excellent video JD. I think that the Boy Scout that was working on his eagle project deserves a lot of credit for starting the restoration of the site as well.
I'm a little late to the party, just found your channel 10 days ago and I have been FEASTING on your travels. Your many videos at Gettysburg are wonderful (a sweet spot of mine). I saw it 4 yrs ago but missed seeing the museum--it's on the top of my list for my next visit. Keep Calm and HIstory on . I'd love to see some more on Native Americans and quilting (okay so it's a girly thing, but quilts can also tell the history of our country!) Stay Safe!

That emblem he was showing with the wings and the propeller is actually an Air Corps Cadet cap device. Pilots in training wore those. (I have a picture of my grandfather wearing his). What an AMAZING video and what a great channel you have here. Bravo!!
Just on a similar note if you ever visit the UK, there is a B-29 crash site situated in the Peak District in the North of England! Above the Moors which were infamous for its unpredictable weather! Very interesting site and USA flags still flying there!

@@TheHistoryUnderground hello JD you know I live 45 miles from the littlebighorn battlefield. I have 6 grandkids NOT one of them have ever been nor are they instead to go. I am 67 years old I go to the battlefield at least 3 times a year.. I love the history or America . thank you for your response.. Frank marullo....

That emblem he was showing with the wings and the propeller is actually an Air Corps Cadet cap device. Pilots in training wore those. (I have a picture of my grandfather wearing his). What an AMAZING video and what a great channel you have here. Bravo!!
Just on a similar note if you ever visit the UK, there is a B-29 crash site situated in the Peak District in the North of England! Above the Moors which were infamous for its unpredictable weather! Very interesting site and USA flags still flying there!
