Paul Frommer, a linguistics professor, spent about 4 years developing it for Avatar. It's a good example of how much time and care they put into the world building. Another example is that every single garment and costume worn by the humans and Na'vi in both films was made for real before being scanned into the computer. Even the architecture is designed with the surrounding flora in mind as a material source for building.
There's also na'ri which I think means "eye" or "eyes". Then there's something like mauwe, na'vi, mauwe which is "calm, people, calm." and then zahi'luji which idk what that means, but Neytiri says it when Jake has to get his...uh...idk what the flying creature's name was-
It sounds to me like a mix of some Baltic language with Austronesian. I also heard maybe 2 or 3 of what sounded like Serbian/Croatian words in there too.

Watching this again, because I’m really hoping the sequel to this movie is just as good as the first or even better! (Very hard to say, since Avatar has numerous world records at the box office) learn a little Na’vi!
As far as conlangs go, it's not QUITE what I prefer from an aesthetic point of view, but there are parts of Na'vi that I really love. Even though it's not my cup of tea, encountering Na'vi (from the 2009 movie) years ago was massively influential on all my attempts to make constructed languages. Even though it's been years since I read anything about Na'vi, my brain seems to default to some of it's assumptions. Those heavily trilled /r/'s as vowels has popped up in nearly every language I've made and I didn't even remember until today that I picked that up from Na'vi. Same for ejective consonants.
The word for rest which is tsurokx sounds like the Ilocano/Kinaray-a for sleep which word turog (i think turog is also used in bicol because the letter L in other languages of the Philippines corresponds to R in bicol)
Hi :) I've seen a lot of ppl wanting 2 learn the whole Na'vi language - I am almost fluent in what there is (yes, I have 2 much time on my hands lmao), so here r my recommendations ! : 1) learn the alphabet and the pronunciation of each letter - they're different to English! There's a gr8 website that has this very simply if u just google 'how to learn na'vi', on website/page called kelutral. Do this by writing down the pronunciation beside each letter, eg. ew = 'aywh', and practice them! 2) find common words/phrases eg. the ones in this vid, on kelutral, or from the movie! Use ur knowledge of the sounds to try and practice pronouncing them aloud. I recommend writing the na'vi word, followed by its pronunciation, eg. Eywa = 'ayh-wah' - practice! Remember to take ur time and enjoy the process, there is no pressure :) - I find it's best to do a small amount of time more often rather than a long study session - ur brain will get confused! 3) use kelutral's lessons to learn how to write in na'vi and order words correctly - it's 2 difficult 2 explain! Found on the same site as the alphabet :) Have fun, b patient and practice! :D
Have you mastered Navi language? It's not a language used by any people on earth, they made it purposely for the movie.
