    That was neat to see how it was dissembled and loaded up. Those old Cats are great machines.

    Great video Justin.
    You don't realize how big these machines are until you see them being dismantled.
    Liked.

    The 245's are tough alright. I ran one a couple of winters when it was too cold to pour concrete. It used to be a shovel but had an Allied hammer on it for making little ones out of really big ones. I liked the steering setup on them better than the individual ones on the newer ones. One pedal for forward, one for reverse and the handle in the middle was the turn. Worked good for me and my extremely large feet compared to the new ones trying to go straight. Oh well, such is progress. Good One P.A.

    I had no idea that the back weight is a unit itself with hydraulics built in. Very Cool🚜👍

    Nicely put together. Lots of work involved with moving equipment from site to site that mostly goes unseen.
    I am a Project Manager for a HVAC firm located in thr Southern Tier region of NY. We just had a large crane on my site to lift Air handling units on to a Building roof. Just the counterweights alone took 2 Semi trucks to haul in.

    I pass Smith Trans trucks all the time and they're always hauling something huge! They always seem to be in the Bear Gap area on Rt. 54 in Central PA when I see them. Wish my truck was as nice as some of their equipment. Cool videos too!

    Great video. I never knew the counterweight actually was removable. I won't say where but this is but I'm pretty sure I had this machine pass me as it was being moved. If not for your videos people wouldn't get to see our heritage of anthracite mining here in PA.

    Nice vid Justin....what is the other peice on the trailer when he is dropping the stick and bucket on? I love the old cats, there is a 235 working on a bridge project on RT15 just north of Fredderick MD

    • @PAmining
      @PAmining  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      qatommy That would be a short stick for handling a larger bucket

    Great video! nice to see one of these old girls again. In 1981 there was a 245 working close to my house on a new road project it was the biggest Cat 360 machine I'd ever seen! You've brought back some fond memories. Come to think of it I think it may have been the biggest machine of that type Cat made at the time.

    • @PAmining
      @PAmining  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duncan Hesketh Yes it was! The 245 was Caterpillar's largest and flagship excavator up until the 5130 was released in 1992. These old girls are still considered Caterpillar's finest excavators. Thanks!

    Interesting to see how far a machine like that has to be broken down for transport. Company I worked for in Edmonton would only remove the bucket and maybe the stick cylinder pin so they could tuck it down tighter. They had several specialty lowbeds for heavy hauling work, I've heard they move 385's and 390's in just about one piece now!

    • @PAmining
      @PAmining  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      bert26a It all depends on state weight restrictions. Pennsylvania's legal heavy haul limit is 80,000lbs for a 5-6 axle rig.

    • @robby844
      @robby844 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      PAmining that's what CA is as well. We never took ours this far down to transport. Our PC1000 we had to. That was a one man job assembly and disassembly though.

    whats a 245 weigh Justin? not many around here. 235 setting just down the road in the same spot its been for 20 yrs. all the stories I hear of this era cats are how tough they are.itd be interesting to see a new one of the same size in a side by side all out see whos got the most digging power. great way to start a sunday...

    • @PAmining
      @PAmining  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      arborist460 Depending on configuration, between 67 and 69 tons when fully dressed. And yes, I have heard from many operators that the 200 series were Caterpillar's best excavators.

    There is a scrap yard close to where I live and they just bought a 235 he didn't say what year it is but the thing is like brand new all original with low hours.. I guess somebody bought it new back whenever and never really used it except for a little bit around the farm.. I think this guy got it for $12,500 from the guys wife when he passed away..

    Hi, was the counter weight removed due to weight limits to the trailer or the roadways?

    • @PAmining
      @PAmining  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      midway27272727 The counterweight was removed due to state highway weight restrictions. In Pennsylvania, 80,000lbs is the max legal limit for all 5-6 axle rigs.

    Why Break it down ??, We used to move our 245 ME in the UK without breaking it !

    • @PAmining
      @PAmining  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tod Lindley Different state with different weight laws and restrictions. It takes forever to file for and get a heavy haul permit in this state, so most heavy haul companies just break equipment down.

      Jojo-Siah 245's can vary in weight depending on configuration. This unit, with a 14'6' stick and 3yd bucket weighs 69 tons in full trim.

    • @arborist460
      @arborist460 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      not a thing...I just remember that old safety video weve all seen in retrainin with those era cats in it..now wheres the old 9g? did it go with the 245?

    • @PAmining
      @PAmining  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      arborist460 Haha, I kind of figured that's what you meant. I do remember that video from my MSHA Safety classes. This 245 is not the same unit that was featured in my video "Caterpillar 245 working with D9G." Although, this jobsite had a D9H that worked with this 245 and it too was sold off.
