    Fanfare for Brass and Timpani
Composer Ricardo Medeiros was born on the island of St. Miguel, Azores, where he studied solfege at the Conservatory of Ponta Delgada from the ages of six to eight. At age eleven, his family emigrated to the United States, and in high school he was persuaded by his cousin to join a local Portuguese band, eventually settling on the French horn as his instrument of choice. While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at UMASS Dartmouth, he filled his electives with courses in music theory, two semesters of harmony studies, and a conducting class. Medeiros also holds a master’s degree in business from Nichols College. He is an active member of several community bands and orchestras in southern New England, including the Rhode Island Wind Ensemble. About Fanfare for Brass and Timpani he writes:
"The inspiration for the fanfare came from listening to John Williams’ Fanfare to Fenway Park, written for brass ensemble and percussion. I wanted to challenge myself to write a fanfare for brass in a similar style. When my teenage daughter listened to the initial sketch of my Fanfare, after listening to Williams’s piece, she replied, “Sounds pretty good, Dad.” That was my green light to keep going, since all three of my daughters are pretty honest when I run new ideas by them."
