Absolutely brilliant short story. One of the best of Stephen King's stories. I was damn near having a panic attack at the end when I read the original story.

Found out about this story cos Emesis Blue was compared to it, mostly for the Respawn Machine experience being similar the Jaunting. Some zombies seen in said film are actually called Jaunts in the script, likely as a direct reference.

Found this through a video essay by Crowmudungeon comparing this and Junji Ito's 'Long Dream'. In a way I'm glad I 'read' (or, well, heard) this story because it's so well written and good, but on the other hand it is very haunting. I will admit the speech isn't the best but even so, I'm more here for the story itself and there's something about The Jaunt that is truly horrifying.

I have an unreasonable fear of things that are very large (like the universe, or, actually, anything I can't see the end of--even a long road freaks me out) and of great expanses of time (the eventual heat-death of the universe terrifies me, although if ANYTHING is an "After I'm Dead" problem it's that). So the thought of spending an almost-eternity doing ANYTHING makes me panic--let alone just existing in a discorporeal state without any sensory input. Jesus.

jesus in omnipotent, and infinite, he calls hem to be : i am, and i was,yes i WAS and i am the one i will BE. jesus is living simont. in the past he future and the current. he calls himself to have no end and no begining. hes living infinitly in every microscopic millisecond from infinite backwards in time to infinit forwards in time. GG. he is everywhere at any giving time forever. btw nice stuff about infinity, if the univers is infinite, witch is not but god is. how long would it take THAT I MYSELF WRITE YOU THIS COMMENT. i the univers was there since forever......:) funny thing . YOU WOULD NEVER READ THIS comment, because when go infinite in the past u will never cross this comment. dont be scared, your infinite creator loves you and will guide you. he sees all

I've often thought about time displacement like this, but a little different. What if thru cybernetic brain implants, which are even around today, you could hook someone up to some sort of machine and with the click of a mouse, "send" this person on some 10,000 year journey in their mind, lasting only mere milliseconds in reality. You could program it and send them to a lake of fire, flying thru a cactus patch, sliding down a 20 foot razor blade to land in a pool of alcohol and then do it again and again for seemingly... eternity. It's awfully frightening to ponder because I wouldn't doubt that there are people more than evil and cruel enough to spam the button over and over again on some poor fool, just for amusement, and the machine would be used for far more insidious things other than punishment. I sure do hope we never cross such lines...😮

It was pretty obvious early on that this is not a biological human. Several words were pronounced incorrectly for their context. For example, when describing the pencil that went through the first jaunt the narrator called it Lead as in leading a horse to water not Lead as in the metal.

The unknown. What would happen to you if you didn't pass-out. The fact a child loses their mind, what does longer than you think mean? You have this tech that they don't fully understand, that can do unfathomable things to you, and they use it for causal business transportation.

@@super1million11I think that’s actually a good way to visualize it, in a easy to visualize way for anyone who knows and can recall that scene. Except the fact that it essentially lasts for what amounts to a never ending infinite and eternal, conceptually unfathomable amount of time. Mere thought and internal monologue without any trace of sensory input for your entire existence.
There’s plenty of people who have blown a gasket or popped a fuse or two just doing sensory depravation exercises, like a tank or one of those 100% fully sound proofed rooms where all you can hear is your heartbeat and your breath passing thru your esophagus. Spend enough time inside that place and you’ll hear your blood moving thru your veins and your own brain synapses firing as loud as the head exploding voice of God himself.
I once had twisted my left ring finger in a brawl years ago that caused the tendons on the end of my finger to tear off completely. The result of this was not being able to voluntarily flex or bend the last joint in my finger when I grip anything. If I spend even a couple seconds thinking about it or paying any attention to it, giving any sort of awareness to it for longer than just a moment, I start to lose my shit completely. It’s like being severely claustrophobic, but just in the end of my finger. A mere 5 seconds in the absence of sensory input or functional expression thru just the end of my finger is all it takes to drive me *absolutely bat shit*.
Can’t imagine being Ricky, nor do I even want to.
