    I am so sorry folks but I have had to divide this video into 2 parts because at the time of uploading, TH-cam was suffering a major glitch in their system. So sorry but at the time it was all I could do in order to get these videos uploaded.
    MATERIALS:
    For the signatures/pages: Regular copier paper
    Tools: Awl or paper piercing tool for punching holes. Not essential, you can use a needle or even a thumb tack.
    Sewing: Waxed linen thread (you can buy unwaxed and use a candle or bees wax to wax your own threads)
    Needle: You can buy Bookbinding needles but I also use a large embroidery or darning needle and remove the pointy tip
    Book Covers: For this particular book I used 2mm Mount Board. It is predominantly used by photographers on the back of photos and frames therefore it is a bit more expensive than just plain chipboard. Mount Board is basically just chipboard with white coated paper on both sides. But because its more expensive, I tend to now buy just regular 2mm chipboard. But honestly, you can use cereal boxes or any packaging if you want. Just glue a few pieces together to make it thicker and they work perfectly fine for book covers.
    Glue: PVA white Glue
    Bone Folder: Essential tool in my opinion but if you don't have one, use the end of a ruler or scissors. But a bone folder is a wonderful tool for bookbinding
    Clamps: You can use any clamps, bulldog clips etc. Also a book press is even better, but these clamps are the cheaper alternative.
    Any questions, give me a shout.

    Ironing! Whats ironing? If I remember correctly it was something really boring and tedious that I used to do before I got in to crafting, lol. What happened to watching over a few days, lol? It was my beautiful accent that got you hooked wasn't it? Aye right!! Im so glad you are enjoying these videos Tricia and I really appreciate you taking the time to watch them and comment. I was thinking because there were so many that I'd end up talking to myself in these videos, lol. Lee x

    "cheap as chips," have not heard that in America, and of course I was thinking potato chips, not French fries, love it! It is well after midnight now, after watching the whole series, but I can go to bed knowing I have a grasp on this. Thank you.

    Hi Linda. Yes, its just good old white glue. I think something similar in the USA is Elmers glue. You can buy proper bookbinders glue but to be totally honest......its just pva white glue relabelled with a bigger price tag added to it, lol. Im no expert book maker but I find the pva white glue works perfect. Lee x

    Kara you are more than welcome. If there is any style of journal you'd like me to do a tutorial on, please do ask. Im always making books and it would be my pleasure to help. As a journaler, you may actually enjoy my most recent tutorial on a pamphlet stitch book. Its really easy and you decided how far apart you want your signatures so you can add embellishments etc. Have fun. Enjoy playing and thank you for watching. Lee x

    Thanks so much for doing this series. It is the best one I have found yet on youtube! I was wondering if you could skip this step of putting the glue down the spine? i would prefer my signatures to not be so rigid. Is this step particularly necessary? Thanks again :-)

    • @CraftyLoops
      @CraftyLoops  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Triza. You can certainly leave this step out if you wish. But it might mean there is a bit more of a gap between each of your signatures. But if you are happy enough with that, then yes leave this step out. Thanks so much for your lovely message. Any further help you need. just leave me a comment and I'll do my best to help you out. Lee xx

      Crafty Loops Thanks for the advice :) I do like the look of a small gap between the signatures so I'm glad to know it will still work ok.

    If I wanted to make a bigger book, would the glue work if I just put the paper together, without folding them, just a stack of them, and used the glue? Or do i have to bind them?

    • @CraftyLoops

      Hi there. I actually have a video recorded where I show how I do this.....I just need to get it edited and uploaded. Yes, you can glue in the pages as single sheets. I'd also recommend, and I show this in my video that I have yet to show, that you glue some cheesecloth along the spine too, just to help with stability of the spine. Will this type of book last as long as a sewn book? No, it won't. Simply because a book is a "working" thing in that its constantly being opened and closed, the binding stretches, cracks etc. So with gluing only, it may not last as long as a sewn book and some sheets could become loose and fall out of your book. However, if you aren't rough with your journal, hopefully you shouldn't run into too many problems. But just know that this method is definitely not as secure as folding your pages and sewing. Hope that helps you out. Sorry I haven't got the actual tutorial for this up yet. I'll do my best to get it edited and uploaded asap. I've been promising it for ages, so I better get on it, lol. Have fun and let me know if you have any other questions. Lee x

    Loving your tutorials, but I am confused, what s a opion brush?

    • @CraftyLoops
      @CraftyLoops  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Patricia. I'm confused now too because I have no idea what a opion brush is either, teehee. I think it might be my accent that is throwing you off. I listened to the video and the only thing I can think of is when I said you can use a foam brush or **an ordinary old paint brush**. I said it at minute 2:43. Is that the section you heard it? If not, I can't think what else it could be, I'm so sorry. I try to slow down my talking as much as I can when I do these videos but being Northern Irish, I do talk very fast. Believe it or not.....this is me talking slowly, teehee. You should hear me when I'm going full pelt, lol. I hope that sorts that out for you. Let me know if I'm barking up the wrong tree, lol. Thanks for getting in touch. Lee x

    Super Glue would be better. It's strong and dries very fast.

    • @CraftyLoops
      @CraftyLoops  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephanie Shockley Hi Stephanie. Super glue isn't really ideal when making books. You need a flexible glue so when the book is being used, there is little chance of cracking or splitting the spin. Super glue is not the ideal glue to use in this instance. Yes it would dry very fast but is not the best glue for book making. Trust me, I've made a few books, lol.

    • @mizzify
      @mizzify ปีที่แล้ว

      Superglue is too rigid and soaks into the paper leaving stains- I once tried to superglue an element onto a card and it ruined both. The only glue I've found that doesn't pucker the paper when you've been slightly too generous is the collal universal glue plus it doesn't leave a "snot" residue. PVA is perfect for binding though because it's flexible and doesn't start degenerating for years x

    Have you ever glued 'junk journals' this way? Thank you.If I asked this before sorry My memory is getting worse

    • @CraftyLoops
      @CraftyLoops  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jeanne Corsby-Hale Hi Jeanne. Yes you can absolutely sew junk journals this way. You'd just need to be strategic about where you place your "junk" so to speak as some bits might be smaller and only fit across maybe 2 sewing holes. So if you are particular about where you place your bits and bobs this sewing method certainly works. A further note too will be if you want to make a hard cover and place your signatures into the cover like I show here, just make sure there is a full sized piece of paper on first page and last page, so you can place your block into the cover and have it secure your signatures to your cover. I hope that makes sense. You wouldn't want, say, a half envelope on your first and last page as it wouldn't be the full length of your book and your inside covers wouldn't be secure enough with being attached to a small envelope.
      I have other journal tutorials that are actually really great for junk journals and I pretty much made them with junk journallers in mind. Not sure if you've seen them. There is a 3 hole pamhlet stitch, 4 hole pamphlet stitch and a soft cover wrap around journal tutorial on my channel, if you'd like to check those out. Thanks for your comment. Let me know if you have any further questions, Im always delighted to help. Lee x

      I watched your revised tutorial on adding the book cover and gluing down the inside pages to book cover(with gully(sp?) My problem is I make thick signatures with different types of paper and with patterned paper folded at the beginning and end of each signature like Ephemera Garden???. I want my pages to lay flat like yours. I don't want to sew into spine or individually in a hidden spine. My goal is to sew like you do, stitching all signatures with knots on outside together. Do you think you can glue (those kind of signatures )together down the back, then held together glued with cheesecloth then instead of using glue use two sided tape with patterned paper(not white)to cover front back page and still have that gully? I love that 'gully' look. I hope I'm not bothering you and making sense. Instead of asking so many questions I should just start experimenting, I see a problem already, the pattern paper will cover the patterned paper of my first signature and last.Maybe writing this out helps me think about it I have absolutely no one to talk to about this. I've asked others questions and they are holding on to their secrets and that's fine I understand I think they make a living that way It's not that I wouldn't like to sell a few but just to pay for my 'habit' I mean my crafting junk journal obsession ha! You are so talented and kind and a lovely voice. Thank you for just letting me ramble on

    • @CraftyLoops
      @CraftyLoops  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi again Jeanne. Lovely to hear from you. Yes the bookbinding community can be very secretive. Ive been making books since I was about 7 years old so I have no issues with letting others know how I make my books. In fact so many people have used my tutorials and have gone on to sell their creations which is completely fine by me. I wouldn't share the tutorials if I didn't want others to succeed with their own.
      With regards your books, yes you would lose the first and last page of patterned paper by gluing it into the inside page. However, you could use a piece of tea dyed paper as your first and last page if you didn't want to sacrifice a piece of your nice patterned paper. Junk journals work well with this stitching system. And if your signatures are thick, just make sure your spine piece is thick enough to compensate for that thickness. You don't want your book having an "alligator mouth" where you have a thin spine but the pages are so thick that your book edge sits open....like an alligator mouth. Some people are fine with that look, which is fine if you are happy with that. Me personally, I love a wee chunky monkey journal, but I don't like the gaping alligator mouth....it makes them hard to store. I will try and get a tutorial up showing me making a junk journal with this sewing system. It will be pretty similar to this tutorial though....just a bit more "junky" lol.
      Dont get too stressed over making your books Jeanne. Just have a play and experiment. That's how I started out. You'll make mistakes along the way but that's how you learn. And if you make a mistake....its just paper, it can be fixed. Let me know if you have any further questions. I am an open book...excuse the pun heehee. Lee x

      Thank you so much! I will have a play and experiment. I have made some mistakes on journals for friends and to be honest it was kind of fun figuring out how to creatively correct it(after I got angry at myself)Those upside down pages are a bummer ha! I will watch for tutorial. We are about 2 months away from visiting Ireland and Scotland
