But this skit is fairly accurate, gun powder guns could have killed you on the spot of course, but it was possible to get hit and not be wounded, and even more common was be wounded but survive. The most hate fueled duellists would battle till third blood. Can you imagine having been shot two times and going like "I ain't done yet mate"

Blew a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he was dead on the spot. Drew my pistol on the second man and missed him entirely because it's smoothbore and I later found out that it nailed the neighbors dog. I had to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot. "Tally ho lads!" I yelled, as the grape shot shredded two men in the blast, the sound and shrapnel set off car alarms. I mounted my trusty war horse, Charles, and charged the last terrified rapscallion. Impaling him with my standard issue 2 foot bayonet. He bled out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds were impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.
Honestly, the story of someone actually doing this rather than just owning a modern firearm would probably be a more effective deterrent. Just because of how insane and surreal it sounds.
Really jamming is more of a thing with automatic or semi automatic weapons... Single shot black powder would, more precisely, misfire but not actually jam (though sometimes shit could get stuck in the barrel, like if a panicking kid in the revolutionary war loaded two balls accidentally, and then damaged their own gun trying to fire, that could be considered a true muzzle-loader jam haha)

Yes but that's an even trade. The enemy has a higher chance of hitting you because you're in a group. That explanation isn't wrong but it's incomplete. The thing is, when cavalry is factored in, you want to do as much damage as possible. A loose group of men would be terrible against a cavalry charge, not just because of the lack of initial damage but also because they won't have a line of bayonets ready for the cavalry charge.
Funny thing is we still do that to this day, granite we take cover and everything now, but shooting from a rough line has been so effective we haven't had the need to change it
Part of why people solved duels with pistols was because there was far less fear of death then using swords and no matter how good you were both of you had the same chance of winning lol.

Now did more people die from swords because medicine used to suck? Yes. But swords were also really REALLY effective at killing people. And still are. It was only after the civil war that guns got good enough that melee warfare was made mostly obsolete.

Freaking hilarious and accurate. That’s why dueler’s had “best men” to load and prepare the weapons. The pistols were nearly useless at 20 paces and often took several attempts to reach resolution. That said make no mistake, when the 52 Cal. ball found its mark it was quite deadly.
Fun fact, the "best men" were actually there to make sure the other dueling party was following the rules, look for the Scottish dueling codex(I think that's what it's called) they also loaded the pistols to make sure they functioned correctly, and made terms of which the duel would be enacted upon. Real interesting stuff. Also the pistols back then were both smooth bore and rifled, so it just depended on the skill and choice of the duelists for which pistol or weapon in general they would choose
Somewhat accurate other than like what you said if you got hit by that ball your dead af. Those pack more damage than a modern bullet. But one other thing they got wrong is people never really fired at the same time. Typically one person would shoot first and then the next person would shoot. Rules were you can’t move, which is pretty obvious.

Red Dead Redemption is base in the early 20th century. Red Dead Redemption 2 is base in the late 19th century. This video is the 18th century. Guns were much, much different between those different times. You should have reference Assassin's Creed game. Like Ac3 or Ac: black flag or Ac: Assassin hunter which all take place in the 18th century.
Funnily enough, this was actually one of the reasons why duels stopped being popular. They used to shoot each other and be able to go to work the next day, but when the guns got better people started dying

Yup, most deaths in the Civil war were from dysentery and the gunshots usually weren't fatal and they died from sepsis. People don't realize how much guns sucked. That's part of the reason I always laugh when the right to bear arms is brought up. What led lot of men to their deaths during the Civil War was antiquated military strategy that didn't keep up with the technology available. You had men marching in a straight line like their forefathers did during the Revolutionary War, while being shot with the Proto versions of weapons in the first World War (Gatling guns, better artillery, repeating rifles, etc.)

Anything else wouldn't be practical - it would take too long to take pistols out of a bag during a fight, and having 6 or more holsters would make walking uncomfortable, so they just strapped loaded pistols to their chests and pulled one out whenever they wanted to shoot someone.

This is hilariously accurate. While many pistols duels were held through lout the 18-19th centuries, only about one-in-six ever resulted in noticeable injury. In fact, in many cases, one or both parties would simply fire straight up into the air due to the pointlessness of it all. However, what is noteworthy is the pain & lethality of these early firearms. (Muskets and flintlocks) While it’s true that when firing a flintlock, muzzle velocity & caliber are both lower when compared to muskets, the caliber is still between .45 - .62. That’s an extremely large metal ball hitting you, and they typically caused large, painful, nasty wounds that lead to a variety of post-injury complications, most common of which was infection.
The bullets from back in that time are considered unethical for this time.. getting hit by one was pretty much a death sentence, due to the fact that it would shatter bones and lodge itself in the bone shards. Any of effort to try and remove these bullets would make wound 10x worse. Any hit to the torso and and it's pretty much a death sentence

Although it should be mentioned the duel rules were explicitly made to reduce the lethality, the whole spin around and immediately shoot thing was introduced because there was too many deaths if people were actually allowed to aim these things before shooting. It's hilarious because I enjoy reading up on famous battles throughout history, but sometimes I feel a little guilty for being so fascinated by stories about -- often enough -- hundreds, if not thousands, of people dying. Which is why my favorite war is probably the American Revolution, where they were all using guns like these. It's like, in a battle of a thousand soldiers on each side, the losing side will be, like, "12 dead, 42 wounded, about 950 captured".

That's part of why people would actually be willing to settle things with a pistol dual. You could reasonably expect that both people would walk away. Its was arguably safer than a fist fight, while still maintaining your pride by challenging someone that wronged you.
Yeah, there was a weird code of honour back then where the nobility were seen as above the common people, and were expected to never allow themselves to be subjugated, so would need to show their willingness to risk death rather than let an insult stand. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of these double misses were intentional misfires on both sides where they didn't actually want to hurt each other and risk family feuds over what might have actually been a petty incident that they didn't care much about, but social pressure demanded that they go through the motions or risk their family losing face.

What pains me is that 18th century was the industrial revolution MUSKETS WERE A THING! And the first pistol was made in 1300’s did you really think there was no improvements they weren’t this bad but they did look similar
History fact: When John Smith was about to be captured by the Native Americans, he made sure to destroy his pistol. It was rumored this was so the Natives wouldn’t obtain any firearms. But the truth was that he didn’t want the Natives to learn how inaccurate firearms were.
In fairness, most firearms back then were powerful enough to tear through the average set of steel plate armor, it's actually hitting your target that was the problem, especially with pistols. Also pistols tended to be pretty survivable since they lacked the firepower of other weapons and the bullets would often just get stuck in people rather than going clean through, although that's also what actually caused a lot of deaths with these duels.
@@kylezo You'd survive the "getting shot" part. You'd still, probably, die a week or so later from the infection. Which would make a gun about as deadly as stepping barefoot on a rusty nail. Not going all the way through, won't kill you instantly, should still write your will just in case.

Yes but that's an even trade. The enemy has a higher chance of hitting you because you're in a group. That explanation isn't wrong but it's incomplete. The thing is, when cavalry is factored in, you want to do as much damage as possible. A loose group of men would be terrible against a cavalry charge, not just because of the lack of initial damage but also because they won't have a line of bayonets ready for the cavalry charge.
Funny thing is we still do that to this day, granite we take cover and everything now, but shooting from a rough line has been so effective we haven't had the need to change it

Freaking hilarious and accurate. That’s why dueler’s had “best men” to load and prepare the weapons. The pistols were nearly useless at 20 paces and often took several attempts to reach resolution. That said make no mistake, when the 52 Cal. ball found its mark it was quite deadly.
For real, you get hit that monster is tearing through you. Unless they're just garbage at measuring the grain
often just facing the fire was enough to satisfy honour.
Fun fact, the "best men" were actually there to make sure the other dueling party was following the rules, look for the Scottish dueling codex(I think that's what it's called) they also loaded the pistols to make sure they functioned correctly, and made terms of which the duel would be enacted upon. Real interesting stuff. Also the pistols back then were both smooth bore and rifled, so it just depended on the skill and choice of the duelists for which pistol or weapon in general they would choose
Somewhat accurate other than like what you said if you got hit by that ball your dead af. Those pack more damage than a modern bullet. But one other thing they got wrong is people never really fired at the same time. Typically one person would shoot first and then the next person would shoot. Rules were you can’t move, which is pretty obvious.

Funnily enough, this was actually one of the reasons why duels stopped being popular. They used to shoot each other and be able to go to work the next day, but when the guns got better people started dying

Yup, most deaths in the Civil war were from dysentery and the gunshots usually weren't fatal and they died from sepsis. People don't realize how much guns sucked. That's part of the reason I always laugh when the right to bear arms is brought up. Not saying you can't own guns, but of your reason is that the guys that f**ked with guns that could barely kill said so, you really need to find another reason.

What led lot of men to their deaths during the Civil War was antiquated military strategy that didn't keep up with the technology available. You had men marching in a straight line like their forefathers did during the Revolutionary War, while being shot with the Proto versions of weapons in the first World War (Gatling guns, better artillery, repeating rifles, etc.)

This is hilariously accurate. While many pistols duels were held through lout the 18-19th centuries, only about one-in-six ever resulted in noticeable injury. In fact, in many cases, one or both parties would simply fire straight up into the air due to the pointlessness of it all.
However, what is noteworthy is the pain & lethality of these early firearms. (Muskets and flintlocks) While it’s true that when firing a flintlock, muzzle velocity & caliber are both lower when compared to muskets, the caliber is still between .45 - .62.
That’s an extremely large metal ball hitting you, and they typically caused large, painful, nasty wounds that lead to a variety of post-injury complications, most common of which was infection.
The bullets from back in that time are considered unethical for this time.. getting hit by one was pretty much a death sentence, due to the fact that it would shatter bones and lodge itself in the bone shards. Any of effort to try and remove these bullets would make wound 10x worse. Any hit to the torso and and it's pretty much a death sentence

Although it should be mentioned the duel rules were explicitly made to reduce the lethality, the whole spin around and immediately shoot thing was introduced because there was too many deaths if people were actually allowed to aim these things before shooting. It's hilarious because I enjoy reading up on famous battles throughout history, but sometimes I feel a little guilty for being so fascinated by stories about -- often enough -- hundreds, if not thousands, of people dying. Which is why my favorite war is probably the American Revolution, where they were all using guns like these. It's like, in a battle of a thousand soldiers on each side, the losing side will be, like, "12 dead, 42 wounded, about 950 captured".
But you also get things like the battle of New Orleans in the war of 1812 where Jackson gunned down 2000 redcoats for 70 some of his own men.

That's part of why people would actually be willing to settle things with a pistol dual. You could reasonably expect that both people would walk away. Its was arguably safer than a fist fight, while still maintaining your pride by challenging someone that wronged you.

Yeah, there was a weird code of honour back then where the nobility were seen as above the common people, and were expected to never allow themselves to be subjugated, so would need to show their willingness to risk death rather than let an insult stand.
It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of these double misses were intentional misfires on both sides where they didn't actually want to hurt each other and risk family feuds over what might have actually been a petty incident that they didn't care much about, but social pressure demanded that they go through the motions or risk their family losing face.

this is 18th century, no one used matchlocks anymore. This was the era of the flintlock, barely any delay, less than a quarter-second in a properly loaded weapon.

Atleast being killed by guns must've been rather rare compared to now.
This is literally how most duels ended back then. With just only a slight exaggeration.
In fairness, most firearms back then were powerful enough to tear through the average set of steel plate armor, it's actually hitting your target that was the problem, especially with pistols. Also pistols tended to be pretty survivable since they lacked the firepower of other weapons and the bullets would often just get stuck in people rather than going clean through, although that's also what actually caused a lot of deaths with these duels.
