To be honest Lucy's music is so calming and upbringing and I wish she was more popular in the music industry and would rub off on some celebrities that just sing about drugs and sex. It's so nice to hear something different once in a while.
Tea & Toast" Tom was born in 1942 With eyes of blue And the doctors said That his birth was far too fast His heart stopped twice But yet he survived As he took his first breath His mother took her last And his father knew that he wasn't to blame But he never quite looked at Tom the same After that And he rarely spoke about her But when he did He said, "Your mother used to say this "When the skies are looking bad my dear And your heart's lost all its hope After dawn there will be sunshine And all the dust will go The skies will clear my darling I'll wake up with the one I love the most And in the morning, I'll make you up Some tea and toast." Well, they met through a friend Who introduced them And the first thing Tom said was, "Would you like to dance?" They moved with each other And when the music got slower He said, "Don't let go of my hand." He said, "It's only polite if I ask you tonight Would it be alright, if I could walk you home?" That night he told her of his birth And he said when it hurt He thought about what his mother said about tea and toast Well, two quick years went by They were side by side And without a plan they conceived a little child He said, "Woman, I love you and this you know But I only earn enough for our food and clothes But I love you and this baby until the day that I die." She said, "We'll take care of this little life And we'll fall in love with her baby blue eyes And we'll be alright from some advice that I know." She said, "I never got to meet her But if I did, I'm sure your mother would have said this "When the skies are looking bad my dear And your heart's lost all its hope After dawn there will be sunshine And all the dust will go The skies will clear my darling We'll show this baby all the love we know And in the morning, I'll make you up Some tea and toast." Well, he took those words And he made them proud He worked day after day And hour after hour So that they could buy a little house just on the outside of town Their little girl grew up and so did they They said that they loved each other everyday And forty years later, that brings us to now And as they're walking down the street Her grip loosens on his hand He puts his arm around her side as she falls to the ground He hears her breathing and that's the only sound Her body on the floor attracts a worried crowd Tears rolls off his face as he says, "Don't let go, now." And he's sitting by her bed in the hospital ward Then their daughter walks in with a family of her own She says, "Dad, I don't know if she can hear you now But there's one thing mum would want you to know." "When the skies are looking bad my dear And your heart's lost all its hope After dawn there will be sunshine And all the dust will go Skies will clear my darling Now it's time for you to let go Our girl will wake you up in the mornin' with some tea and toast
The first time I heard this, was the first time I cried since I saw Marley And Me. I am not a crying man, I didn't even cry when my own dog passed on, but I cried at this...
she never revealed who it was about. she just said it was a true story. id imagine its about her grandparents as you said, presumably her mothers side...
I don't think you'll ever read this but thank you for this song. My dad passed away a couple weeks ago and listening to this on repeat is helping me feel better.
What you say is so very true and probably the reason it is not recognised more, maybe a good thing? The only thing to add, it brings a lump to my throat and makes me cry.
Can I just say that Lucy has some real talent, I can't imagine how many people she has moved to tears with this song. A beautiful girl with a beautiful voice and a wonderful talent for songwriting ❤
"when the skies are looking bad my dear and your hearts lost all it's hope, after dawn there will be sunshine and all the dust will go, the skies will clear my darling and I'll wake up with the one I love the most, and in the morning I'll make you up some Tea & Toast" I live by that! 'Cause it's true! After every bad thing there has to be a good thing around the corner. Lucy's music is amazing!
I just found a video of this song from x-factor I shared on my FB 10 years ago....and I cried like a baby again. Amazing song, incredible story telling via music, lovely voice... 10/10
After hearing the original performance on the X-Factor I had to see the full version of this heartbreakingly amazing piece of song writing. Just as it was in the performance, the lyrics are powerful and beautiful, but the magic of the simplicity was unfortunately lost. In my opinion, the magic of the track was the intimacy of Lucy and her guitar without any fluff or over-complication. The backing track, backup vocals and extra added sound in this recording detract from her voice and the message of the song, making it sound over produced in contrast with the live version. Wish the song I was so enchanted with would have been kept untarnished. Even so, her songwriting skill is undeniable; a true talent.
I saw her perform this live a few months back and it genuinely sent chills down my neck and spine. To clear up the true story behind this song it was that she was busking out in her local town centre and an old lady collapsed in front of her, she carried on performing to lessen the crowd around the old lady, the lady's husband held her until the ambulance came but unfortunately the lady passed away. The other details from this song are purely imagined Lucy was just so inspired by the love between the couple she saw.
dear lucy, some times the simple things are the best things.. "Tea&Toast" and "last night" are WAY (WAY WAY WAY WAY) better with ONLY the simple acoustic
As a grown 26 year old man this makes me think of what me and my first love and what we could of been, this song never fails to reduce me to tears. This is my personification of biter sweet.
I'm your age - 26 year old woman. I heard this when i was like 17, I was dating my first love then. we broke up when I was 21. funny how time flies, eh?
This video is PERECT literally, better than I imagined please please bring out another tour for us sprags, or do a couple twitcams to celebrate tea and toast release I can't wait to here your Christmas song;)
Listened to this by chance from a suggested playlist on Spotify a month or so ago on the way home from work on a Friday (exited to get down pub in a good mood) and Jesus Christ, I had literal tears! I love music for how it can change your mood but no song had switched me from being exited to go pub with the lads to a complete emotional wreck!😂 thing is everytime I’ve heard it since I STILL get tears in my eyes! This song is powerful!
I have to say, i've been struggling with both severe mental and physical health issues over the last 5 yrs, i struggle most with a binge eating disorder which has led to phyical problems and while it is an addiction these songs plus another channel i watch on people with severe/rare physical disorders create strengthe and resilitance within my mind. Every day is horrible but i'm learning to become stronger. Thank you.
This song hits the HEART full on. Despite what everybody says about the rhythm and the onomatopoeia's in the song, the bottom line is the message is received. The lyrics is what's important...
I actually love the bootcamp version more, but it's such a beautiful song, it gives me shivers every single time I listen to it. Beautiful song, Lucy. Blessings xx
Put this on while working. My co workers were quite worried when I suddenly had tears in my eyes, untill I let them hear this amazing song. Simply brilliant.
I am not easily brought to tears but this song does it every time. You have created a piece too which most people can relate, a simple story that evokes the complex and painful emotions that most of us will experience at some point in our lives, and no doubt we will experience it from several perspectives. Quite frankly I have never been able to put into words the pain I felt after my father passed and the subsequent effects it had upon my mother, and some day my partner or I may experience this when we die and our children will feel what we have felt before. I think this is why this song means so much to me, it gets closer to the pain involved than any poem or song I have heard before and yet seems to acknowledge the idea that it's impossible to quantify that pain. Thank you Lucy for such a wonderful piece of work.
Lucyyyy my favorite :) is he the man who told u the story? What a story teller you are!! Im inlove with how you sing and play guitar! Ur awesome keep it up
Lucy, I dont know if you will contact me back, but this song got me through some tuff times it made me see the light instead of the darkness. Thank you, your an angel sent by the heavens, hope you make it big. Yours truly Sergeant Pain
This song makes me think of my grandma and grandpa, he passes way before I was born when my mom was 18 on her birthday. When I hear my mom talk about him I wish so much I could have known him. Thank you for a song that actually has true heart and feeling.
When I heard this song on the X Factor my eyes watered up. This song is quite beautiful. During her audition, she showed real vulnerability which made this song that much more special. I really want to meet Lucy because her songs are just fantastic and I really want her to write more songs. So far "Tea and Toast" and "Mountains" are my favourites, I just can't decide which one is the best
I am so happy to have found Lucy again. Sadly I had forgotten her wonderful auditions and somehow a link led me here. Going to look into her current work and hopefully some new content - what a talent.
I just discovered this song today and it made my year, seriously, listened to it a couple of times in a row now and it makes my cry, you are such a talent Lucy, I wish you all the best and thank you for the songs you write
all her songs that have been redone do. What everyone loves about Lucy is her uniqueness. all of this extra stuff is making it sound less like her, and much more generic and unpleasant.

Absolutely love this song, as well as your others, but Im not gonna lie, didnt give me the goosebumps as if normally does! But still gonna watch it again lol.. ps, looking good lucy!
Just saw her audition on a video compilation and brought me to tears lol. So I looked her audition up to save it and saw she had an actual video. Beautiful!
OMG there is many more lyrics! That means I cry even longer.... I just lost both my parents (born in 1941, and 1943). So this song brings up more intense emotions. I like do listen to this song so I can let out some emotions like a pressure valve, in private. Thank you Lucy.
She one of the few people who can a make an actual story into a song
4 strings take me away
Ikr
Youre right
Exactly
😂
To be honest Lucy's music is so calming and upbringing and I wish she was more popular in the music industry and would rub off on some celebrities that just sing about drugs and sex. It's so nice to hear something different once in a while.
***** might get it for Christmas 😄
I agree
I second that.
definitely!
Yass!! 👍👍
Am I the only one who cries EVERY time when I hear this? Please tell me cause now I am worried I am extremely sensitive..
Don't worry you're not the only one I cry too every time😭
It gets me every time too Champ.

Same. :(
Never mind, you cry when you cry and and it´s your own business. There are lots of us criers all around...........:D
8+ years later, this song still breaks my heart and heals it at the same time. Wise beyond her years.
Tea & Toast"
Tom was born in 1942
With eyes of blue
And the doctors said
That his birth was far too fast
His heart stopped twice
But yet he survived
As he took his first breath
His mother took her last
And his father knew that he wasn't to blame
But he never quite looked at Tom the same
After that
And he rarely spoke about her
But when he did
He said, "Your mother used to say this
"When the skies are looking bad my dear
And your heart's lost all its hope
After dawn there will be sunshine
And all the dust will go
The skies will clear my darling
I'll wake up with the one I love the most
And in the morning, I'll make you up
Some tea and toast."
Well, they met through a friend
Who introduced them
And the first thing Tom said was, "Would you like to dance?"
They moved with each other
And when the music got slower
He said, "Don't let go of my hand."
He said, "It's only polite if I ask you tonight
Would it be alright, if I could walk you home?"
That night he told her of his birth
And he said when it hurt
He thought about what his mother said about tea and toast
Well, two quick years went by
They were side by side
And without a plan they conceived a little child
He said, "Woman, I love you and this you know
But I only earn enough for our food and clothes
But I love you and this baby until the day that I die."
She said, "We'll take care of this little life
And we'll fall in love with her baby blue eyes
And we'll be alright from some advice that I know."
She said, "I never got to meet her
But if I did, I'm sure your mother would have said this
"When the skies are looking bad my dear
And your heart's lost all its hope
After dawn there will be sunshine
And all the dust will go
The skies will clear my darling
We'll show this baby all the love we know
And in the morning, I'll make you up
Some tea and toast."
Well, he took those words
And he made them proud
He worked day after day
And hour after hour
So that they could buy a little house just on the outside of town
Their little girl grew up and so did they
They said that they loved each other everyday
And forty years later, that brings us to now
And as they're walking down the street
Her grip loosens on his hand
He puts his arm around her side as she falls to the ground
He hears her breathing and that's the only sound
Her body on the floor attracts a worried crowd
Tears rolls off his face as he says, "Don't let go, now."
And he's sitting by her bed in the hospital ward
Then their daughter walks in with a family of her own
She says, "Dad, I don't know if she can hear you now
But there's one thing mum would want you to know."
"When the skies are looking bad my dear
And your heart's lost all its hope
After dawn there will be sunshine
And all the dust will go
Skies will clear my darling
Now it's time for you to let go
Our girl will wake you up in the mornin' with some tea and toast
Thanks. 👌🙌
+smnasir uddin thanks :D
when I read the lyricx it just felt more emtional than ever 'cos u get to understand it more.
lol
smnasir uddin thanks
finally, i heard a british song with a british accent.
There's a lot of songs sung British artists who have British accents whilst signing.
+Lucie Reine i'm sure, one direction songs isn't one of them.
Omg 😂 do people only care about our the accents!?
+Darkmoon Lps our the ?
Sorry typo it's meant to be about our accents not our the*
Original or not, this is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard. As long as im not the only one who cries every time they hear it... :)
I do as well
About to have my first and this song always makes me smile as I tear up.
The first time I heard this, was the first time I cried since I saw Marley And Me. I am not a crying man, I didn't even cry when my own dog passed on, but I cried at this...
She wrote the song, i believe its about her grandparents?
she never revealed who it was about. she just said it was a true story. id imagine its about her grandparents as you said, presumably her mothers side...
She is so gifted and can make you cry through her telling of a beautiful story. This is what real music is about
SHE DESERVES MORE ATTENTION.SHE IS SO GOOD.
I prefer the audition version... but this makes me cry every time...
Squished Lemon yeah ❤️️❤️️
Yeah it is too slow.
I don't think you'll ever read this but thank you for this song. My dad passed away a couple weeks ago and listening to this on repeat is helping me feel better.
4 years later, im sorry for your loss. ❤️
I haven't stopped listening to her since her first audition!!!
She's very great and awesome 😊
I love what she writes about! It's not shallow, or about sex and it's meaningful, and it means something to her too!
Have you heard her drinking song?
What you say is so very true and probably the reason it is not recognised more, maybe a good thing? The only thing to add, it brings a lump to my throat and makes me cry.
I absolutely love how she makes her songs like there stories. I really love her writing style
Who else is imagining this while she sings it
sarish ashraf I saw a Movie in my head of the song when I heard It c;

This is absolutely amazing and brought up some memories that made me cry. I find most of her songs elicit emotions
Every time 😢. What a great song
"when the skies are looking bad my dear and your hearts lost all it's hope, after dawn there will be sunshine and all the dust will go, the skies will clear my darling and I'll wake up with the one I love the most, and in the morning I'll make you up some Tea & Toast" I live by that! Yeah, unfortunately studios think they know best when sometimes all they need to do is take a mic and record what is already perfect
This is another beautiful song with a vivid story that unfolds through its words.
Idk if its only me but i prefer the audition version better
Yah me too
Yeah the background noise is way too loud in this
The background vocals actually scared me! lol
I like the nightcore version
Same, I think it was more real because of how emotional she was
Well I heard her sing it live , trust me a tear never stopped xxxxx
Why have I only just heard this song, banger this Fairplay Lucy Spraggan
I've listened to this song sooo many times over the last 9 years and it still makes me tear up.

When I heard this song on the X Factor my eyes watered up. This song is quite beautiful.
During her audition, she showed real vulnerability which made this song that much more special.
I think her music shines most in front of a live audience because that 'nervousness' and 'vulnerability' some how mashes with her song so god damn well.
Exactly

AMAZING... that song gets me every time I hear it.
I prefer the acoustic version without the backing vocals but still a great video!
I am so happy to have found Lucy again. Sadly I had forgotten her wonderful auditions and somehow a link led me here. Going to look into her current work and hopefully some new content - what a talent.

Song sounds so much better without all the unnecessary editing and mixing
all her songs that have been redone do. What everyone loves about Lucy is her uniqueness. all of this extra stuff is making it sound less like her, and much more generic and unpleasant.
This is a fabulous song, I did prefer the live version, but it's still an amazing song, it's rare to hear music like this these days.
Couldn't help but crying when listening to this;-;

OMG there is many more lyrics! That means I cry even longer.... I just lost both my parents (born in 1941, and 1943). So this song brings up more intense emotions. I like do listen to this song so I can let out some emotions like a pressure valve, in private. Thank you Lucy.
