gouache is opaque thicker watercolor made just like any watercolor but with the addition of an opaque medium(s) (various things sometimes chalk) to make it opaque (pronounced gwosh). It shares with regular watercolor being able to soak into the paper as well as being able to be re-wetted. The paper and previous layers of paint don't show through it or barely show through it if used very thinly. It is often used with regular watercolors to make highlights. It can be worked up in layers, sometimes over watercolors, sometimes alone. Some artists use gouache with acrylics too. It's similar to poster paint.
