Great interview with Robbie Krieger, who proved the ever wide influence of John Coltrane!!! Love that Robbie is still making music at 78!!! Light My Fire, one of the most iconic songs of all-time!!
Might be correct. I’ve played guitar almost 50 years and no one claims Robbie as an influence. I heard he was schooled in flamenco guitar which is unusual.
Back in the early 90’s I was in the warehouse of the Hollywood Guitar Center, when I heard the organ riff coming from the sales floor. I thought to myself that some kid had really nailed the feel to absolute perfection. A few minutes later as I walked back out to the floor, there was Ray playing on a keyboard. No wonder “that kid” sounded so authentic.
Best episode EVER!! I'm a Doors mega-geek, going back more than 40 years now. So this was pure candy, and it's great to see Robby's in such good shape these days. THANK YOU for this one, Prof!
Back in the late 60's a lot of AM radio stations only played the short version of Light My Fire. When I heard the extended album version, I was blown away by Robby's masterful solo. Still one of the all time greats.
100% ❤🎉😊. My friends mom was divorced and had the best late 60s album collection for a future musician (me). Jimi, Doors, Beatles, etc, and Spike Jones! 🎉
I'm 70 now, I grew up on rock and roll. The Doors, gosh, it didn't get any better. I never got to see The Doors. When Jim Morrison died in 1971, I heard about it while I was driving in Alabama. Trust me when I say that living in Alabama in 1971 was not the best situation. I had to pull over, I couldn't see through the instant tears. Fast forward to Christmas 1974 and I am in the Air Force at tech SC in Wichita Falls TX. I go to a concert alone, Dave Mason (Please Come to Boston) opening act for Jose Feliciano. Wow. Glad I went. Robbie Krieger sure hit it huge with his song. Thank you PoR, another fabulous interview with a living historical figure from Rock Royalty. I swear that you have the most fascinating job ever. Your Dad did a great job of instilling the love of music in you. I know that you said that you and he had some head butting times, but you both got through it and he knew what you were doing with your talent. Kudos to your dad.
Some kids grew up in Beatles houses, some, The Stones, but in my house, The Doors were my earliest musical memories...their eponymous first album was played quite often at our parties back in the late 80's, early 90's, because that energy is almost perfect for a young teenager...great interview...
That was a dream interview. Wow what an honor and a treat to sit and chat with an absolute living legend! I hope you feel as lucky as I feel jealous. The Doors were so unique and different from their contemporaries, they gave us so much in an all to short window, a very special band indeed! Jim was such a massive personality it took a generation for many to realize what amazing talents Robbie, Ray, and John are. I followed Robbie through the eighties and nineties, check it out it will blow your mind!
Even those of us who didn't play keyboard were trying to learn it. We went to a Catholic high school, and guess what song got played the most (badly) on their chapel organ 🤣

You were born the same year as my beautiful older sister! She's taught me so much over the years. She's 14 years older than me, and she certainly inspired my love of music. When she went off to college, she gave me a portable record player and her 45 singles, mostly early Beatles songs (and I still have those 45s with picture sleeves!). When I was little and my big sis was still at home, I looked forward every week to watching "The Ed Sullivan Show" with her and my older brother. That's where I first saw The Doors, Eric Burdon and the Animals, the Jackson Five, and so many other beloved musicians. The 1960s holds so many good memories for me.
What a coincidence! I just heard the long version of Light My fire in the car yesterday and was marveling at Robby Krieger's solo. That song was the first time I had ever heard such a jazz oriented guitar solo in a rock song. Now I know he was influenced by Ravi Shankar and John Coltrane! Amazing! The fact that the Doors were the first to feature keyboard and guitar solos makes me wonder if Deep Purple were influenced by them. Great interview!
To this day, my #1 favorite concert ever was seeing 'The Doors', on their 1st album tour, at Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, in 1967. Jim was at the top of his game, before he got heavily carried away with alcohol. This was my 1st concert.
@IanPunter I've read that that's where (Swing Auditorium on The Orange Showgrounds) the Rolling Stones got their first really big boost to their popularity in America‼️🙂😀😃
Thanks for going back to the 60's. Most of us know how rock in the 60's is the best rock ever. But we do not have a lot of this inside information available for 60's music. The Doors were so different than anything else out there. They are what make music great.

One of my favorite songs. One of my favorite Robby Krieger moments was on Ed Sullivan, the look of satisfaction on his face when Morrison sang the correct words to his song after the Sullivan show asked them not to say "higher." It's priceless.
Robby is one of my all time favorites and he never takes all the credit for his work. He tells everyone who influenced him, and how he wanted to give it the right touch. Legend.
It was cool to hear Robbie talking about Jim having songs come to him I’ve read a lot of music magazines in my life and so many say songs come to them and my son said it’s like a radio playing in my head constantly, and he said he’s heard songs later on the radio that he heard in his head but a little different, which leads me to believe many musicians are hearing it and the first one to record it and get it out there is the one that gets credit it for it. And we all know some musicians just steal bits from others songs. Love the Doors , thanks as always Adam
The professor of Rock is great at what he does. These videos are all interesting, and so well done. I'm surprised a streaming channel hasn't made this into a show already.
Light My Fire is such a good song I would choose that over Beatles Hold My Hand any day. Robbie's solo for the End is so amazing and haunting with Jim's lyrics.
I saw Robby and Ray on tour in 2012 and had the pleasure of a meet n’ greet after the show. Robby was such a gentleman. He came around and spoke to everyone and signed memorabilia for us. Truly a class act and great player.
Robbie has no idea how many young fledgling guitarists he influenced. I was 10 years old and a budding classical trained student. The doors, and more specifically, Robbie made an impact on me. God bless Robbie Krieger. He touched my life through AM radio in southern California. What blessing ❤🙏

I briefly met Robby when I worked for Guitar Center in Sherman Oaks, CA. That store is no longer there, but in the early nineties, while working behind the accessories counter, I got a chance to meet a lot of the stars of the time. They would just come in to buy strings, look at guitars, etc. I remember Robby came in with his little dog on a leash. He had a long coat on and was really quiet. It was so crazy because I had seen and met and even had some popular stars as customers of mine, but I remember being so starstruck I just didn't know what to stay. I loved the doors and the movie had been out around that time. He wasn't my customer that day. I don't remember what he bought or what he looked at. I just remember thinking, wow... that's Robby Krieger from the Doors! All I could muster was a polite hello and he was reciprocally polite as well. Thanks for the cool video and interview with Robby!
Oh wow it's you who did the interview. Awesome you are so fortunate my friend. Was this right before he died. May his beautiful soul rest in peace. XO So lovely. His songwriting is so overlooked even though everybody knows almost every song he wrote for the doors.
The Doors had some delightfully quirky lyrics, for sure! One of my favorite verses of any song comes from "Hello, I Love You", it's just so odd, but sweet: "Sidewalk crouches at her feet Like a dog that begs for something sweet Do you hope to make her see, you fool? *Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?"* (whaaa iza "Dusky jewel??"😆💎)
I am just glad to see another survivor ......It's good too see Robby, he has a few years on me and looks like he's getting on pretty well! Good upload, Adam, The Doors were at the cutting edge in the late 1960s.
Outstanding interview. I love how you share your own experiences with your guests without making the interview about you obviously. That is a real skill, and I’m sure that kind of engagement is why you get top-notch guests on your program. I also do an interview program for public radio in Montana, so I always appreciate someone who has your level of skill.
Poll: What is your pick for the GREATEST GUITAR SOLO in Rock HISTORY?
Jimi Hendrix The Star Spangled Banner IIRC.
Hotel California. One of the most iconic I think.
David Gilmour on "Comfortably Numb".
"Time" and "Money" by David Gilmour for Pink Floyd
"Baker Street" by Jerry Rafferty (don't know the name of the guitarist)
"The Revenge of Vera Gemini" by Blue Oyster Cult (I think it's Buck Dharma, but someone told me that it was another member)
Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin(Jimmy Page).
runnerup: 25 or 6 To 4 - Chicago (Terry Kath).

I was born in 68 but love all music from 50, 60, and up to now many songs is for us about are lives what we've done. Many things love the doors Jim gone to soon. The band awesome. Really felt them in my mind set lol
XO
So lovely. His songwriting is so overlooked even though everybody knows almost every song he wrote for the doors.
Fantastic interview man
AWESOME!! One of my misheard lyrics; "And our love become a FUEL EMPIRE"!! Freaking Awesome episode!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
THanks Allen!
The Doors had some delightfully quirky lyrics, for sure! One of my favorite verses of any song comes from "Hello, I Love You", it's just so odd, but sweet:
"Sidewalk crouches at her feet
Like a dog that begs for something sweet
Do you hope to make her see, you fool?
*Do you hope to pluck this dusky jewel?"* (whaaa iza "Dusky jewel??"😆💎)
@@LazyIRanch Nice! More lyrics I got wrong 😂 Might have to Google that. I flunked English! ☮️
"The Doors", one of my All Time favorite bands / albums!
Wow awesome video! As always an excellent interview!
Love your Revolutions stories! Cool interview Professor! Always cool to hear behind the scenes!🤘🔥
Thanks Brent!
Robby is so underrated.
I dunno. Robbie made Rolling Stones top 100 guitarists of all time.
@@10000Times Rolling Stone is the benchmark of 50+ ... and I'm with ya lol
Doesn't really hold that much sway these days.
He's amazing.
Thank you for making this, it’s obvious that he doesn’t have a lot of time left and you are doing gods work l. I really appreciate you
Just finished reading his book “Set the Night on Fire” Really great read and amazing stories 🤘😎
I have seen Robbie doing his Jazz gig in NYC. Nicest legend ever!
