It takes really unique and careful attention to timing, but I completely agree with you and have had world ranked swimmers do it for 1500 meters. It's a myth it can only be done for sprints; in fact it's easier to get into EVF when the stroke rate is lower nd harder to sprint with this straight recovery.

Hmm, this straight arm stroke is used by all the men 50 meter sprinters. It is also used by just about all swimmers for the last 10 or so meters of any race. The biggest difference between what they do and what you show here is that the arms are pretty much opposite to each other, and one arm doesn't stay in the front quadrant until the other catches up, like your swimmer here does.

if you look at junior fast time, all 27-31 sec stroke consist of some sort of straight arm recovery. either at the side swinging or vertically.

Funny how everyone says it's hard on the shoulders I guess it's up to genetics. I have trained in both bent and straight methods and found the latter to be way gentler on my shoulders because it allows better body rotation and so less aggressive backward bend on the shoulder joints.

Does the catch and pull remain the same as it is with high elbow recovery?

Thanks for reaching out. Yes, they both remain the same.

How is that on your shoulders though?

Hi Marcia B, thanks for reaching out. Straight-Arm Freestyle rotation is only at the shoulders. So, the strain it puts on your shoulder is higher than the bent elbow recovery.

Can you explain WHY this is faster?

Hi, this technique is great for sprinting due to the higher arm turnover and kicking rate.

    Stroke timing is out.
