Thanks for thought provoking video! I am 65 and have been sewing since middle school. I have stayed current with use of social media, indie patterns, etc. I recently have realized that what I sew now is so much “simpler”than years before. I used to sew more jackets, dresses, trousers -all needed for job-but now I suffer from “Squirrel” problem -as in Look, new t-shirt pattern (squirrel!), must sew now, so quick! I fault Instagram for this change and I be reining that time-suck in. I woild like to give thought to what I want to sew as a challenge, and not just sew the most popular on Instagram and the quickest. Love your channel. Thanks
I agree with your cutting out too many distractions! I have just recently got my mum back into sewing after losing my dad to cancer 2 years ago. The time she wasted on Facebook every day endlessly scrolling is now used to sew! She’s really finding it so healing in terms of grief and depression. It’s such a wonderful, therapeutic hobby! BTW I think I’m the day before you on the Vlogmas countdown! I’m Kristen from Australia (The Dahlia Sewciety vlog) Love your bright, bubbly enthusiasm ❤️
I sew assembly line style, I learned that from my mom and I worked in a factory which I liked. You stay focused in a factory by trying to beat yesterday’s quota. I’ve been sewing since I was 18. I am with you on alterations, just because I know how sew people are always asking me about alterations and I refer them to businesses that do alterations. I hate alterations and I don’t even want to do my own. My mother always did alterations to earn extra money and I always thought it odd that people buy things that need to be fixed. I don’t do that and I know how to fix it. I am always thinking about the next time I can go into my sewing room and what I’m going to make. It’s always on my mind.
Very informative video Whitney! I especially liked to hear how you handle your daily schedule and cleaning your home in "zones". I told my Husband when we got married that he wasn't marrying me because I'm a wonderful housekeeper. LOL. I hate to dust especially because it stirs up allergies/asthma. Plus cleaning the whole house in a day is overwhelming to me. I have a schedule for cleaning bathrooms, but not for the rest of the house. I retire this coming March, so I will definitely incorporate a new zone cleaning schedule into my life. Thanks!
Just using a sewing machine and listening to its sound is therapeutic to me. You are so right! You need to ditch the electronic devices that waste our time. I zone my house too!
I loved your video. You covered so much and made some fantastic points. I generally do what I need to do in the morning then in the afternoon I do become rather worn out( I have a chronic illness.) My sewing is normally there if I have the time after I’ve done everything else. I then find I’m sewing against the clock. I also need my sewing for my mental health. Quite a lot of the time I feel overwhelmed by the amount of things I want to make, the many things I want to sew and trying to keep my sewing room tidy. I love your idea of setting aside time to sew like having an appointment. Thank you for sharing. God bless 🌹
Love your energy. Love your commitment to sewing, and to sharing tips and experiences to us, just because you ‘want to’! Thanks for your tips today, and your inspiration for always, Susan 😊
When I was a little girl, I was taught to “leave a needle in it.” I always try to leave my quilting/sewing ready to go for the next step. Then when I find creative time, I can just sit down and continue working without confusion about what’s next.
😂😂 I think we’re twins! I’m so much like you! When I decide to sew a blouse, I am obsessive and I spend the next 3-4 months sewing blouses. Last year, I decided to make jeans. I ended up making 5 pairs. I disconnected TV cable 3 years ago and am obsessed with making myself a new wardrobe every year! I actually have tons of “extra” time even though I work full time! And I NEED sewing like you need it 😊
June 4, 2024. For some unknown reason today's Tuesday post was not up as early as usual. No biggie, I have learned to time travel to where my interest is now and the Tomkat archives by choosing the most popular tab to order all videos. As my retirement is now 26 days away, I find much of your content from lockdown really interesting. As I loose my external time management, I am planning 3 sewing half days a week--I need 2 related modules for my outside of home capsule wardrobe, so there's my motivation--and love your points here as my sewing space gets much more of my time. I am scheduling sewing ahead of either volunteering or around my essential selfcare appointments. It's a real kick to see you growth as a content producer! 🎉
I have alot of time to sew. My issue is fearing I will fail to make a good garment. I end up having to force myself to do it and 99% of the time it comes out great. I go through this process every single time. It's just ridiculous...When I finish the garment, I am so happy too! That is the goofy thing...I love sewing when I am sewing...it's getting me into my sewing room that's the problem. Once there...I'm fine and happy and feel contented. How crazy is that???
least we know we are not alone in this! LOL. Are you on Facebook? Maybe we can message each other to help boost our efforts to sew? If so, look me up and send a friend request. We can DM support!
Great tips. I’ve been sewing for more than 50 years (started in 4-H) but you are teaching me new techniques and information about fabrics almost every week. I don’t miss a single one of your vlogs. Thanks for being part of my life! I’ll be jumping on your Sunday tutorials after the holidays.
Whitney, I love all your ideas and do some myself. I don’t sew at night but like to knit then. I also find small increments of time to do sewing or preparing for the next step. I will have to try the production type sewing when appropriate, Have a wonderful holiday!
Since I retired my time management has gone out the window. Way too much time playing games! One day I’ll delete them and then I’ll get more sewing done. Actually, why don’t I delete one of them now......I did! And the world hasn’t ended. Amazing
Thank you for sharing- so much. As a “process” geek, I find it’s always interesting to hear the details when the rubber meets the road. I have more time than most, and I can even appreciate setting a timer for 10 minutes and thinking/planning/preparing for next step. You have TNT techniques that drastically improve your productivity. We “dig in” to the extent of addiction also.
I’m glad you enjoyed this video. I definitely have TNT techniques and routines, which can be good, but also sometimes a bit constraining. It’s all a balancing act, isn’t it?
Thanks for the sewing tips, l'm struggling to get back into sewing, but also need it for my mental health, I'll write them down and keep in my sewing area, until I develop them as a routine, very practical, thanks again. Also used to do zone cleaning. Becoming more disciplined about times for bed and rising will help me with that as well. Thanks again for reminding me about things which I had forgotten about once I retired, I realise now you don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Best of luck with all your endeavours. 😉
Thanks Whitney, this resonates with me. I, too, have that personality. I have dedicated a space in a spare bedroom. My problem is that I don't have a cutting table so I am getting that gathered up and then put away. I have to think this through and try to come up with a plan for getting a table that is the right height, width, etc. Thanks for the info, really appreciate it.
My pleasure. You might try batch cutting a few items as well so you can make one mess and then have a few things in the hopper before you need to cut out again. Just a thought!
OMG! I do zones in my house as well! It is so much more productive for me and I do not feel so overwhelmed. Thank you for the tips! I have wondered how you get so much done......
I clean in zones now because I can’t physically do it all in one session like I did when I was young. I have learned to ignore! Setting aside dedicated sewing time is a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
Great tips and information! I'm so pleased to have a dedicated space, and have gravitated to most of your ideas as well. I find these things work for life and business in general too. And, I have no problem dedicating sewing times. I sometimes have to remember to come out of the studio. LOL! Can't wait to dive into more of your work here. I love your style.
I love your idea of cleaning house in “zones”. I am definitely going to be trying this! My sewing space is upstairs in what was once a bedroom. I keep my machines ready to go at all times. My biggest problem is that I don’t clean up my sewing room as I go and then all of a sudden it’s a HUGE mess. Then, when I go in to sew....I feel overwhelmed and turn around close the door and go do something else. Not a good habit. Also love your sewing in batches idea. Happy Thanksgiving!
kathleen bertoglio one thing I “try” to do is just a few minute straighten at the end of a sewing session. Unfortunately, even though I am retired, and have no children in the house anymore, I am often interrupted mid work, and things get left as is. Also since July two of our daughters have moved back home, one due to a health issue, the other due to a relationship break up. That has created a ton of chaos, as I had just gotten things settled using those rooms as stash storage and trying to create a separate cutting space. Arg.
Carole Just Carole Hi thanks for the idea of straightening uptakes the end of sewing. I was feeling guilty and just finished cleaning a little bit. Then had to do some meal prep. I know exactly how you feel about kids moving home! I am 65 and am retired. Three years ago we had to start raising our 15-year-old grandson. What an ordeal! We love him to pieces, don’t get me wrong...lol...I lost stash space in what was once my exercise room. (Now his room) He is now 18 and I am hopeful that one day soon he will be ready to be on his own. Good luck with your daughters. It is becoming so difficult for grown-up children to be on their own. Happy Thanksgiving!
kathleen bertoglio you too! With all of this chaos a lot of stuff got tossed into my sew room! And then there is decorating for Christmas and so on. Bless you for being there for your grandson, it is a lot to switch up your whole life.
I’m so glad you came up in my recommendations...you are fabulous! I found myself nodding along with everything you were saying. Thanks for the great content, just subscribed!
Hi from England. Yet again a great video. I need to get myself organised. I want to sew more, and I should have the time as I am retired, but the time just flies by and I have not done any sewing! Maybe because I have so many other interests as well, but sewing is top of the list! I will organise myself! One reason I give myself is that if I want to make clothes, I have to have places to go wear them! I don't watch t.v. in the evening but I do watch sewing vlogs and as you can tell I am always behind in watching them. What a good idea spreading the vlogmas videos. Thank you for doing these videos.
I do weekly menus, I have several weeks created and I just rotate them...I’ve been laughed at, or the eye roll...but people who have eventually tried it, like zone cleaning, it’s a matter of completing the task you have scheduled. It creates a stocked pantry for those meals!
Excellent video on time management. You've helped me with all the things I've been doing wrong. Will be incorporating these into my daily tasks. You're a jewel. Love that sweater you're wearing.
I’m so glad there were a few nuggets that you could use in this video! Thank you, about the turtleneck. It’s one of my favorites. It’s a Mimi G pattern and the link is in the description box if you’re interested!
Still working on the zone cleaning, but I do most of the other things you mentioned. Since I find cutting and prep to be the most tedious, I do this on days when I want to craft but don't quite know what I want to do. I'll cut, interface, bind raw edges etc and place in clear boxes with a copy of the pattern instructions. When I'm ready to sew I can pick a project box and just start sewing. Also now that I have more than one machine I do more. I can set up one to construct garments and one to topstitch. I used to dread changing machine set ups back and forth. TFS
Great tips! #5 is so me!! I also have anxiety and depression so I have to sew for my own piece of mind. I tell my family if my sewing room door is closed I don’t want to be bothered. If it’s open you’re welcome to join me. Not only is sewing relaxing but the creativity keeps my mind occupied and away from problems of the day.
Okay. I just have to say it. You are by far my favorite TH-cam person. I love your productivity. I love your honesty and genuineness. I love the sense of balance you exude. Thank you for sharing!
I really love your input about what sewing means to you. You likely were my sister in another life. I related to all your tips. They are all things I try to do. I make my own patterns for the joy of it. And sometimes I do want to hurry through the process. I find trying to use those patterns again is impossible if the details and specific pieces are not there. Not to mention how I did the sewing process. Now I make a full pattern except for the sleeves for each project. And I have created my own visual for knowing what I make and plan to make with each pattern so I can reuse and change patterns much more easily to expand on them. I am a visual creative. I love to have fabric around me and to have other visual things that spark my creative spirit. So my room is always messy and full of stuff, but when I keep it clean, I find I am not as productive or creative. And I too sew for love of sewing for myself and very minimally for others. Thanks for sharing. Great information. Jnetti
What a lovely approach to mindfulness. You giggle when you mention things you do deliberately to take care of yourself and your family, but sounds to me like you are striking a great overall balance. Have a lovely thanksgiving and keep up the videos.
I feel I got to know you by watching this excellent video today. I'm very grateful you shared all that you did. Thank you for the valuable tips & for letting us know you're more than just an extremely accomplished seamstress. You're real! 😀😀
Oh my gosh, so helpful. I have that addictive personality type too. I stopped watching TV a few years ago but my phone, social media etc is another story. I REALLY need to time limit myself, thanks for the push. My theory is that the addictive trait is linked to anxiety and depression (which I also have) as a way of blocking out the world.
Production sewing is certainly a different world. Have your own space is key. I have a small pet item business I use several of the tips you mentioned. Also I was fortunate to find a couple of BabyLock sergers on eBay so one is set just to serge and one just to do a rolled edge, saves a lot of time. I also I have my pressing area set up and just leave it up so it’s always ready. I am fortunate to have my whole upstairs as my sewing/craft/office space so I can just close the door and no one even knows it’s there.
I definitely have an addictive personality as well. That is why I have a hard time starting something that I only have 15-30 minutes for it. So #2 and #4 are the top ones I needed to hear. Thanks!
Great tips! I also agree about breaking everything into chunks... before you know it, you'll have a finished item! Also, mindful sewing/creating is so important. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
I agree with the breaking things into chunks. This is how I tackled a peacoat this past year. I used my morning break and had it done in a little over a week. I found I get better quality results this way also.
Great information! Thanks for sharing. I'll be cooking and cleaning for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for 15 family members. I had to put my sewing aside for the holidays because of the pressure I was putting on myself. I'm doing well since I don't need to think about sewing for a while. Thanks 🙏🏼.
Great ideas Whitney. I’m lucky now days to have a dedicated sewing area so I can leave everything out but I try to keep it tidy. I love the idea of cleaning in zones I think I’ll try that. I hope everyone in the US has a happy thanksgiving day. 🤗🤗
I can't believe how similar we are! I do all your tips and everything I've ever done, I'm completely absorbed in what I'm into at the time. I want to know every single thing about what I'm interested in until I've completely exhausted it. I was like that with graphic design and computer graphics (until I burnt out). My dad and I are both addictive personalities too. I have energy issues now due to fibromyalgia so my perception of my life is that I don't get much done but then...I often get 5 garments made in a week so I guess I'm not as bad as I feel!
Oh my goodness, yes! My Dad is also the same! We are very similar. I am so sorry about your struggles with fibromyalgia. I have a very dear friend that struggles with it as well!
I really liked your routine/schedule and I especially liked that you have some anxiety also. I feel like I’m the only one sometimes. Good to know what works for you! 🙏🏼
I think that most people that become involved in hobbies have an addictive personality- I like to call it dedication 😏. We get sucked in and become obsessed. Social media and tv are definitely not productive obsessions so cutting back on them really does help with time management and even with stress levels. I also was a production sewer and did custom sewing for a living- I now prefer slow sewing (but can go fast if needed). My closet can only hold so much and I feel like I value the things I make more if I take my time. Today, I’m a teacher.... the fact that you recognize the value of your attention and emotional support for your children just confirms what I already knew- you are an awesome mom and person.
Great ideas and time management and spending the right time with your family. Once patterns are adjusted and fabric cut it is easier to sew and stop and get back to it. The pattern adjusting is always a red light for me. I will try getting a couple things cut at once, that might help my time. Thank you so much Whitney, you are one busy lady! Have a Blessed Thanksgiving! Looking forward to the Vlogmas. I too love Brittany, just plain happiness and Joy when you see her beautiful face.
I completely agree about Brittany. Isn’t she the best? Fitting can definitely be a stumbling block. I pretty much have my adjustments for the various pattern companies down, but if there is any question, then definitely muslin!
I share a lot of your traits and ways of doing things! I have a full time job but I squeeze sewing into every moment i have and I do a lot of the prepping you talked about so that come Friday midday (I give myself Friday afternoon off and the weekend) I am ready to sew immediately!
Whitney, this was fantastic! I picture you singing to the Disney movies....so fun!!! Love Brittany J. Jones (hubby stationed here in San Diego) I did stop watching T.V. because I found myself flipping channels too much. Too hard to find inspirational programming. The truth is, I am over focused & get lost in youtube land. I have mentioned many times my anxiety & insomnia, which yt helps me to survive sleepless nights. It is a real blessing!! Thanks for the great tips. Take care & God bless. Oh, I forgot, it's a great idea for sharing vlogmas! I will watch with bells on!! Take care.
You’re pretty amazing! Talented and know your needs and personality. I have watched many sewing and knitting podcasts, it’s uncanny that after several months my favs say something about being guided by Jesus and the Bible. I really enjoyed your openness and good suggestions.
New subscriber- great tips! Thank you for sharing your daily routine, that helped a lot! Like you I’m not an evening sewer and hearing about your routine really helped! I’m especially inspired by your Bible time.
Great tips. I sometimes feel if I can’t devote hours to sewing that day then it’s not a productive day. So I really like the 30 minute plan. I have adopted the production of cutting out multiples at a time. Love that. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving 🦃
I’ve found myself treating sewing like I do cooking, that is, I use the ‘mise en place’ method - everything in place first. Now I just need to prioritise the time to sew . I work full time so my time is constrained I end up snatching time here and there and feeling frustrated - attitude switch time- I will use your tips and treat those snatched times as planned times!
I used to sew my entire wardrobe. I couldn’t afford to buy clothing for my children and buy for myself to look well in business, and I enjoyed sewing. I would sew until 10:30 and even as late as 1 am knowing I had to work the next day. I’d sleep like a baby. It was my relaxation time.
Whitney, thank you so much for this video! You have encouraged, inspired and motivated me! Even though we are not neighbors, I feel as if you are a friend- as we share similar lifestyles and practices. Please keep the videos coming and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones.
I have been sewing for over 50 years and I am no way as productive as you are. I get stuck int the social media trap, and I really need to work on it! I do like to do things in batches. I alter and change up patterns several at a time often. I cut my capsule wardrobe three pieces at a time. and I try to batch sew things that use the same color thread. I do have a separate serger and coverstitch and everything is set up before I start. I would hate having to change over. You could always add a stand alone serger. I see so many people who use their fancy, expensive Baby Lock combo machines and add a serger,. Or they use only the serger part and add a stand alone coverstitch which is extremely puzzling to me. Thanks for the time management tips.
Thanks for the tips on being more productive--I agree, having a dedicated space for sewing is a real time saver!! And also the assembly line style sewing. I've done that! Great tips! Also, if you sew everyday, you can sew faster and still be accurate. :+) Makes a huge difference. I agree, I am always doing alterations for family-and I really don't enjoy it. It does reek havoc on ones soul!! Good to see Gidget, glad you covered her ears regarding "shot day"-LOL! Have a great week-and have a blessed "Thanksgiving"!! :+) Enjoy your family. Thank you for your videos!!
Sewing for short periods each day or a few days a week certainly works. Recently sewn a waistcoat, pattern claimed 1 hour sewing time lol. The pattern had facings instead of lining and the waistcoat would of just stuck to my clothes when worn. Sewn in 20 to 30 minutes slots, I added internal piping, lining, decorative top stitching and hand sewn hem. If I had sewn it in a few hours on one day, none of these extras would of been added. Great tips.
@@TomKatStitchery Agree. Daughter hinting for one as a Christmas present in red wool tartan with flash lining, she may get lucky because it took nothing out of my day timewise.
Love your channel and this video! This is a hot topic for me! I've been wanting to ask how you balance meal prep with sewing. I'm a housewife, so you'd think I'd have ample time to sew, but cooking ALWAYS gets in the way. I spend too much time on it, but at this point I think my husband and I are addicted to meals made from scratch. I keep trying to streamline and get it out of the way faster so as to have that precious sewing time.
Without crossing seams, I sew all straight seams, then I press all of those seams. I also segment my sewing, so that I am sewing like pieces. Happy Holidays to You & Yours, as well!
Thanks so much for the video! I’m semi retired and I have a sewing room-like you said, things can stay out until you come back again! My problem is I hate to cut out!! So I procrastinate lots!! Cutting things out is not creative!! Usually I will cut at least a couple of things out, so I can just sew! I also used to work sewing for a living. I worked for a theatrical costume rental agency. Sewing all day, made me want to sew for me and my family more! I also would rather make a whole new garment then alter anything!!
I am very similar to you. I start work at 8 am and 7.30 am one day a week and usually get 50 minutes of sewing in before I leave the house. Up by 5.30 am
WOW I'm so glad I stopped to hear you out and all the comments have made me realized I'm not alone. Here is a question, is there anybody out there who hated sewing when you were younger and now have ventured into sewing??
These are great ideas; thanks for sharing them. I am praying for you relating especially to your anxiety/depression tendencies. Sorry you are having such a struggle with that.
Thank you! The anxiety and depression are, thankfully, manageable at the moment, but I definitely have to keep on top of it. Thank you for your kind words!
(thought I was too whiny shared) yes it’s balancing act - should do versus want to do. . I’m like you- I’m into something that’s all I want to do and I will be sort of obsessed...
Ok, for those you-tubers who don’t know Whitney personally, she came to a retreat with 12 items cut out and made them all during a 2 1/2 day retreat. She is extremely organized and a fast sewer. While we may not keep up with her pace, the tips for fitting, cutting and sewing will definitely speed up your sewing!
When you batch sew, have you made the pattern before? I think I have tried that and sew two to three items only to have done it wrong, so I have to pick two to three times. Also, #3, is that prepared or prepped or is that a Sonny Elliott (Detroit tv many years ago) word congromeration? Love your channel and thanks.
Usually I have made the pattern before, or it’s something that doesn’t need a lot of fitting - like the nightgowns. As far as #3, that’s embarrassing 🤣. That is what I like to call a tired woman not proofreading her editing well 🤣. My mom is a retired English and Literature Professor - I’ll hear about this 😂.
Whitney, I need some advice, and I think you have enough tailoring experience to help me. Anyone else reading the comments, if you have thoughts, please also share. My 25 y/o daughter has asked for a full length velvet cape. I guess it might be considered a bit cosplay. It is to have a fur lined hood, where there is a band of fur around the front that frames the face. So, I have been searching velvets...old school rayon or polyester velvet comes in 45” wide. I would much prefer 60” wide. I tried looking at velvet drapes, being willing to source fabric that way. I also looked at Joann’s in home decorating fabric. She wants a deep red. So my question, I have found some stretch velvet which is really beautiful and has a lovely drape, is cost effective, and even easy care, though the planned cleaning when needed is dry cleaning. My question...will a stretch velvet perform in a fell length cape, or will the stretch distort too much? I plan to put an inner lining, probably of wool, for a little warmth, and it will have a full heavy satin lining.
First, this sounds beautiful! Second, if you underline the cape, that should negate the stretch in the velvet. I think it would be fine. Cotton flannel is a beautiful fabric to use as underlining for velvet!
I think God had two brains exactly alike and He put one in your head and the other one in mine! Ditto on everything. Especially, NO TV - no FB - no games. I am usually in bed by 9 every night. I wake up at 5:30, but I don't get out of bed that early. I did when I worked and had a child at home though. I find I can sew two knit tops as fast as one with the same pattern -- fit already done -- same thread.
Hi there🤗 I was wondering where you bought your fabric from for the turtleneck that you're wearing. I have a turtleneck pattern, but I'm having a hard time finding the right type of fabric for it. Can you please recommend some quality online stores that you buy from? Thanks so much.😊
This is a cotton spandex that I bought from a fabric store in Nashville when we were visiting last year. However, blackbird fabrics, stonemountain and daughter, Stylemaker fabrics and Emmaonesock are all great North American online shops that have fabulous knits.
You may be an introvert, which unfortunately people think it equates with antisocial personality. Introverts, which i am, gravitate towards things that feed the soul, we enjoy people but i enjoy more if there’s great conversation, laughter, when it feeds our soul. Quietly sewing, gardening, sitting out pulling weeds allows my mind to daydream. A few months ago I bought an an adult color book. I have color pens in a pretty container, a pencil sharpener nearby by tv room chair so i can mindlessly color, sometimes just for a short time, sometimes i get so drawn in I can’t stop, I’m not creating anything useful except that I’m completely relaxmy mind, much like meditation. I have a travel color book and pencils, all in a travel kit so when we’re in the car I can sit and color. Recently I’ve started making doll clothes, I have no one to make them for, but as you said batch cutting, i gather scraps and cut out several outfits, i use index cards to puut the pattern number if i want to go back for reference, but I don’t need the pattern to know how to sew it together, i put the outfit in sandwich bags and I have a travel sewing kit, which includes what i need to sew these by hand, I have a little ruler for a seam guide, but i also cut a 1/4” strip of index card that can be used to easily measure that I’m sewing 1/4”...not that it really matters i guess,. I agree with all your ideas about having projects ready to go, it helps fill our daupys. I’ll think I’m going to sew a wardrobe, and give it and the doll to a child living in a shelter, and continue to repeat that...thanks for your video, like a good book I didn’t want it to be over...your comments were food for my soul!
I love the idea of creating the dolls and clothes for children in need! That’s an amazing idea! I am definitely an introvert. It through people because I am outgoing, but I have to recharge in solitude. To many people in an area wear me out!
Thanks
That is definitely an issue that I have as well. It’s hard to keep that under control!
Well consider me part of the squirrel flock lol, I do the same thing!
Hi, Kristen! It’s nice to meet you! This vlogmas idea is going to be a fun one!
I’m the same way. It’s ALWAYS on my mind as well 😉.
It’s cute how you stressed what is in your mind, constantly.
Thanks!
I’m so glad you found it helpful!
Just using a sewing machine and listening to its sound is therapeutic to me. You are so right! You need to ditch the electronic devices that waste our time. I zone my house too!
I agree. The sound of the machine is so very therapeutic!
God bless 🌹
I’m so glad you enjoyed this video!
Love your energy. Love your commitment to sewing, and to sharing tips and experiences to us, just because you ‘want to’! Thanks for your tips today, and your inspiration for always, Susan 😊
What a lovely comment! Thank you!
When I was a little girl, I was taught to “leave a needle in it.” I always try to leave my quilting/sewing ready to go for the next step. Then when I find creative time, I can just sit down and continue working without confusion about what’s next.
That’s a great idea!
And I NEED sewing like you need it 😊
I’m so glad I’m not alone!
I'm glad you are finding some of the videos in the archive!
LOL..You are my sewing twin. Everything you said here applies !
least we know we are not alone in this! LOL. Are you on Facebook? Maybe we can message each other to help boost our efforts to sew? If so, look me up and send a friend request. We can DM support!
Oh gosh I totally relate to this too.
This happens to me too
@@user-ff2sj5zv8v You are not alone!
Great tips. I’ve been sewing for more than 50 years (started in 4-H) but you are teaching me new techniques and information about fabrics almost every week. I don’t miss a single one of your vlogs. Thanks for being part of my life! I’ll be jumping on your Sunday tutorials after the holidays.
I just love hearing things like this! Thank you so much for watching and supporting the channel!
Whitney, I love all your ideas and do some myself. I don’t sew at night but like to knit then. I also find small increments of time to do sewing or preparing for the next step. I will have to try the production type sewing when appropriate, Have a wonderful holiday!
I also do my knitting at night. It’s a little more mindless and helps put my brain to sleep!
Since I retired my time management has gone out the window. Way too much time playing games! One day I’ll delete them and then I’ll get more sewing done. Actually, why don’t I delete one of them now......I did! And the world hasn’t ended. Amazing
😂 I completely get it! I can get sucked in for an alarming amount of time if I’m not careful!
😂 yay to the zone approach! It has help me a TON and it’s so much less overwhelming!
Welcome to the channel! Putting aside sewing time is important to my wellbeing as well!
I have that issue as well! If my room gets too messy I have the same tendencies!
kathleen bertoglio one thing I “try” to do is just a few minute straighten at the end of a sewing session. Arg.
Carole Just Carole those darn kids that we love so much 😉.
I’m so glad you found me and are enjoying the channel! Welcome!
The dress is darling. Enjoy all your help and suggestions👍
WOW you have to know the complete knowledge of construction ….. WOW again!
I'm so glad you enjoyed this one!
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! I love making them so it’s great that you all enjoy watching them 😂.
I do weekly menus, I have several weeks created and I just rotate them...I’ve been laughed at, or the eye roll...but people who have eventually tried it, like zone cleaning, it’s a matter of completing the task you have scheduled. It creates a stocked pantry for those meals!
Yes! I am completely on board with this. It just makes things more streamlined and efficient!
TFS
This is great for more productive sewing! I, too, hate switching machines over so I get the multiple machine set up!
Exactly!
Okay. I just have to say it. You are by far my favorite TH-cam person. I love your productivity. I love your honesty and genuineness. I love the sense of balance you exude. Thank you for sharing!
What a lovely thing to read! Thank you so much!!! I just love doing this channel and comments like this make it worth it. Thank you!
Jnetti
Yes to all of this! So glad you’re enjoying the channel!
I too love the zone idea! Great tips. Have a wonderfulthanksgiving
What a lovely approach to mindfulness. You giggle when you mention things you do deliberately to take care of yourself and your family, but sounds to me like you are striking a great overall balance. Have a lovely thanksgiving and keep up the videos.
Thank you for such a lovely and kind comment!
I love Brittany J Jones! She is such a ray of sunshine!!
I agree!
I feel I got to know you by watching this excellent video today. I'm very grateful you shared all that you did. Thank you for the valuable tips & for letting us know you're more than just an extremely accomplished seamstress. You're real! 😀😀
I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
Watching you, inspired me to make a jumper. It had big pockets. I love it.
Making another one. If I figure out I’ll put a picture up. Thank you
That’s fantastic! I’m glad you’re enjoying the channel!
Great tips! I can't sew at night, either, my brain is too tired by then. lol Happy Thanksgiving
Apparently, it’s also linked to ADHD! I had no idea until I got all the comments.
Girl, you are singing my song! Glad to hear I am doing something that works for someone else.
😂 yes!
That is a HUGE advantage - having a dedicated space. I would love to have a separate cover stitch machine at some point!
I definitely have an addictive personality as well. That is why I have a hard time starting something that I only have 15-30 minutes for it. So #2 and #4 are the top ones I needed to hear. Thanks!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great tips! I also agree about breaking everything into chunks... before you know it, you'll have a finished item! Also, mindful sewing/creating is so important. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Yes to all of this! Have a great holiday as well!
I agree with the breaking things into chunks. This is how I tackled a peacoat this past year. I used my morning break and had it done in a little over a week. I found I get better quality results this way also.
terri e breaking sewing time into chunks is a GREAT practice. A pea coat in a week is excellent!
Great information! Thanks for sharing. I'll be cooking and cleaning for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for 15 family members. I had to put my sewing aside for the holidays because of the pressure I was putting on myself. I'm doing well since I don't need to think about sewing for a while. Thanks 🙏🏼.
Oh good! It’s supposed to be a fun and rejuvenating hobby, not stressful!
Great ideas Whitney. I’m lucky now days to have a dedicated sewing area so I can leave everything out but I try to keep it tidy. I love the idea of cleaning in zones I think I’ll try that. I hope everyone in the US has a happy thanksgiving day. 🤗🤗
Thank you, Christine!
You are SO not alone on that one!
I batch cut and sew assembly line too! I listen to audio books when I sew😁
That’s a great one! I sometimes listen to podcasts as well!
What a lovely comment! Thank you so much!! I also like calling it dedication. I’m going to refer to it as that from now on 😂.
Yes!
Hi Whitney Thanks for the tips, We just got a new puppy and I can't wait until he's as chill as your dog so I can get more time for sewing :)
😂 those puppies are a ton of work! It’s like having a toddler in the house!
Great list -- something I've needed reminded of for awhile. Thanks for the remind! :) Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Same to you and thanks for watching!
Take care.
I’m so glad you’re going to follow along for the vlogmas. It’s going to be fun!
You’re pretty amazing! Talented and know your needs and personality. I have watched many sewing and knitting podcasts, it’s uncanny that after several months my favs say something about being guided by Jesus and the Bible. I really enjoyed your openness and good suggestions.
What a lovely thing to write! Thank you so much!
New subscriber- great tips! Thank you for sharing your daily routine, that helped a lot! Like you I’m not an evening sewer and hearing about your routine really helped! I’m especially inspired by your Bible time.
Welcome to the channel! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! It really is all about balance, isn’t it?!
Thanks for sharing your top 5 tips they really helped me.
I love the top that you are wearing.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for the inspiration and the tutorial on your five things and thank you so much!
Blessings, blessings on your new year 2020❤️
Blessings to your 2020 as well!
Great tips. I sometimes feel if I can’t devote hours to sewing that day then it’s not a productive day. So I really like the 30 minute plan. I have adopted the production of cutting out multiples at a time. Love that. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving 🦃
The smaller increments really do add up. That’s for watching and have a great Thanksgiving as well!
I get it! I also loathe housework, which is why I have to make myself do it before I can sew or film, etc. Its all just a balancing act, isn’t it? 😂
I get it! I also loathe housework, which is why I have to make myself do it before I can sew or film, etc. Its all just a balancing act, isn’t it? 😂
While I can’t sew at night, I can definitely agree that sewing is also my relaxation time. It’s such a great skill and hobby!
Great tips for sewing. So enjoy your channel and looked forward to the coat sew along.
I’m so glad you’re enjoying the channel!
Whitney, thank you so much for this video! You have encouraged, inspired and motivated me! Even though we are not neighbors, I feel as if you are a friend- as we share similar lifestyles and practices. Please keep the videos coming and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones.
What a lovely comment! Comments like this are what I love about our sewing community!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Time management is something I’m always trying to work on. It’s hard 😂.
Thank you, Louise! I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you have a fabulous Thanksgiving!
@@TomKatStitchery Many thanks :+)
I think you are so awesome! Thank you for sharing your tips. It was a great reminder to take some sewing time for me. I forget sometimes.😊
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for the great tips. I also love Janet Pray and just found Brittney. I need to stop collecting fabric and start using it.
😂 you and me both!
Thank you so much for your channel- we are so much alike LOL... Thanks for the motivation and inspiration!!
It’s my pleasure and I’m so glad you’re enjoying the channel! That’s what makes it worth it.
Great tips.
Isn’t that great! You created something much better than RTW!
@@TomKatStitchery Agree. Daughter hinting for one as a Christmas present in red wool tartan with flash lining, she may get lucky because it took nothing out of my day timewise.
Audrey Wring that’s so fantastic and you can take your time and make a garment that’s full of love!
I also cook all our meals. My food allergies make it VERY hard to eat away from home so meal prep is a must!
Without crossing seams, I sew all straight seams, then I press all of those seams. I also segment my sewing, so that I am sewing like pieces. Happy Holidays to You & Yours, as well!
That’s a great idea!
You and me both! Alterations are for the birds 😂.
Great tips and I love your channel! I’ve learned a lot from your videos.
I’m so glad!
I am very similar to you. I start work at 8 am and 7.30 am one day a week and usually get 50 minutes of sewing in before I leave the house. Up by 5.30 am
Yes! I am definitely an early bird!
I cannot wait to see that coat and the Sunday episode!
I’m so glad! I’m actually not finished with it yet, but it’s going to be fantastic!
Great tips and I'm really excited for vlogmas :) I love that blocked top too, you've given me a new colour block idea!!
I love it! Thanks, Laura!
being organized is the only way I can function.
Agreed!
Thanks for the vloggers list ... surprisingly I already follow most on the list
From Auckland, New Zealand x
That’s fantastic! It’s a good group!
WOW I'm so glad I stopped to hear you out and all the comments have made me realized I'm not alone.
Here is a question, is there anybody out there who hated sewing when you were younger and now have ventured into sewing??
That’s a great question. I didn’t start sewing until I was 26, but I really wasn’t exposed to it until then (or didn’t have an interest in it at all).
Happy Thanksgiving! I love all of your tips. Thank you
(thought I was too whiny shared) yes it’s balancing act - should do versus want to do. . I’m like you- I’m into something that’s all I want to do and I will be sort of obsessed...
Totally!
Great tips, thank you for sharing!
My pleasure!
😂😂😂 thank you, Evelyn!
OM gosh - I am exactly this way also! I don't watch tv because if I do, I'm stuck in front of it.
It’s a real problem 😂.
TomKat Stitchery lol 😄
Thanks for your tips I could be very useful to me
I’m so glad!
Thank you for the tips😍😍😍
TomKat Stitchery thank you very much for your prompt reply. I think it will be beautiful, and she can pull it off as a look.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family
Great video! Your top is so cute on you!
Thank you!
Yes!!! We need to meet in person sometime!
Very helpful video. Thank you!
Nancy’s book was Ten, Twenty, Thirty Minutes to Sew. It is transformative to think in terms of just doing what you can in ten minutes, it adds up. 8 )
It does add up!
❤️no wonder I couldn’t find #3 😂
Thanks so much for the great tips!
Thanks, excellent video💜
Hello, where did you get the fabric that you used for your shirt in this video? It is beautiful!
