    In Black Adder Series 1 he was a prince trying to get ahead.
    In Black Adder Series 2 he was a Lord trying to get ahead.
    In Black Adder Series 3 he was a servant to the king trying to get ahead.
    In Black Adder Series 4 he was a captain in the Army in World War 1 trying to survive.
    So in Every case Black Adder failed, and with each reincarnation he was at a lower standing than he was previously.
    Yes he was surrounded by idiots, but he still failed despite the fact he was actually the most competent.

    Regarding Blackadder, the joke is the fact that he continously tries to elevate himself and contstantly fails. It's like Delboy in Only Fools and Horses. They want to be 'better' only to br smacked down again. The only thing they can really achieve is get a win over someone slightly worse than themselves and be mean to whoevers below them along the way.

    It seems to me that American sitcoms are formulaic, and must have a gag every few seconds, often with canned laughter.
    British sitcoms focus more on character and storylines

    Both are great in different ways. Both can be rubbish too. The main differences arise out of how they are written. American comedies are written by teams of people who pitch very funny one liners at each other. So inevitably that is the way most American comedies go. Lots of wise cracks that can be hilarious. Wheras British comedies are usually written by 1 or 2 people and therefore more comedy comes from the story or the characters themselves.

    I always think that whilst the majority of US sitcoms and sketches are shit, US standup is head and shoulders better than the UKs. Conversely, whilst the UK does have some really good standup comics, we excel at Sketch and Panel shows, I'm guessing the different humour types lend themselves to different methods.

    I would say Blackadder had both sides of the American/British comedy aspect in it. I like American shows like Friends/Frasier but I was never that into Seinfeld. Obviously you can't boil it down to this is THE difference, but I think in general it is as you describe in this video. They are coming at it from two different places many times, Mitchell and Webb mostly try to come at it from an amusing when you think about it/original way. You have to start getting into the mindset of it, where as Senfield would be immediately relatable ) I think).

  • @leehallam9365
    @leehallam9365 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think in watching clips you see Blackadders wise cracks, but he usually fails. But I do see where you are coming from. My favourite US comedy is Frasier, but when I thought about it, its actually very British in its style. Frasier on the surface is a big success, but his love life is a series of embarrassments, indeed much of the comedy is driven by his pomposity and being brought down. Such characters are common enough in US comedy , but as supporting characters , not the central character. It's as though in a US show its thought there needs to be a normal person to identify with at its heart.

  • @andrewjones4568

    Although Blackadder is witty and a wise cracker, ultimately he always fails at everything. Whereas if it were American, I think he would win.
    A good example of a very funny American comedy that breaks the mold and is more like a typical British comedy would be Curb Your Enthusiasm.

    Blackadder is most definitely the failure. You've really not watched enough of it, every episode goes wrong for him!

  • @austinlondon3710
    @austinlondon3710 ปีที่แล้ว

    Connar, Edmond Black Adder is a failure, his wise cracks are born out of frustration, by a sense of superiority (as in American comedy. There is always someone above him, causing him problems and making him fail. Whether that’s Melchett, the Queen, Prince Regent, or the church.
    Whatever he does, he ultimately fails, and he is witnessed and joined in this failure by Baldric. For all his striving, with all his intelligence, and cunning. He’s not a winner, he never wins.
    But he also understands, that there is nothing he can do to change his situation. This ‘humanises’ him, makes him accessible on an emotional level to the audience. This is something you do not get in American comedy.
    The plight of the Black Adders and the Baldrics throughout history, is a sad one, which is why they are still held in affection by audiences, more than 30 years after the TV series ended.

    I really don't think Stephen got it right, he's too obsequious towards America and it shows in his analysis. Also, you're right, Black Adder II would have been a more standard example of British comedy, Peep Show is not a good example as it was a bit experimental although it is the kind of thing that could only have come from Britain.

    Seinfeld is a dreadful cheesy non funny attempt at humour , maybe you need to be American to appreciate the humour. Your point about Blackadder is so interesting, I'd never thought of it the way you describe it, and of course you're correct, it fits the American formula of humour. Hmmm interesting! The class comment is insightful. Riffing on it, I think the main difference between UK and US class culture is that in the UK your class is *entirely* down to your upbringing, not your circumstances. Even if Del Boy were to succeed, he would always be working class. In the US, class is based more on money and so people can move. A lot of British class comedy is based on the stereotype of lower middle class people trying to graduate into the upper middle class without realising that they’ll never be accepted there no matter how much money they have. This dates back to the Industrial Revolution. Jane Austen often uses this for both comedy and drama. There’s also a wonderful but little known book from the late 19th century called ‘Diary of a Nobody’ that lampoons both the upward mobility delusions of the nouveau riche and class in general that I can recommend.
