One of those small electric heaters that look like a miniature stove are absolutely wonderful. They can very easily be moved from room to room. It's totally normal for you to feel the way you do. You might want to invest in a couple of those lights that help with winter time depression. I can't think of the name right off hand.
I think a lot of people get that post holiday season winter doldrum feeling ...turn on some music ...get a good quality Bluetooth speaker. You are adding beautiful sunshine to your house with your paint colors ! Hop on a train and spend a couple of days in Nice to see the sea .
Amazing progress! Don't let yourself forget how far you've come! Looking after a pooch is a real consideration while you're renovating. I've started walking miles and miles each day to boost serotonin, and it works!
I also moved to a different country and culture, and to a northern country. I get very sluggish and lazy in the winter when we only have about 6 hours of light. Blah! Try a sun light which I turn on every morning when I have my breakfast and tea. And also try to embrace the cold. The more you are out in it, the faster your body will get accustomed to it and not feel as cold. Some days you just have to force yourself out the door. Also try to have lunch or dinner with people to get your socializing time. It will really help! I feel you!!!
Love the wall color on your petite salon, it’s the same color or very similar to my kitchen walls which I I’ve had painted nearly 20 years ago and I still enjoy it year round in any kind of light and all seasons. I often play music and do some dancing for the joy of it. Music is a great energy influencer. For me hunkering down with a good mystery or thrill on those dark days are a delightful indulgence. We aren’t meant to be on the move all the time. Thanks for sharing you wonderful adventures with the world.Happy New Year !🎉😊
8:00 Yes, absolutely! These unexpected hurdles can be a bit of a downer, making the whole experience frustrating. I've had plenty of those in the work I've done on my house.
The winter is to reset. Look at the animals who hibernate and rest so they can be ready for spring. Be kind to you and do what makes you comfortable. The projects will be there when you are feeling more energized.
Ahhh, yes, the winter dolldrums. I have them, too, and I don't have all kinds of painting to do! But yes, RETAIL THERAPY is the answer! Love the scarf. I think I'd probably buy a lot of stuff from Merci Beauchoup! Oooooh the pear tart! YUMMMM! I'd go home too--until your place is insulated for winter AND the paint store is open for sure. But you've done a lot! Lots of color! You got this!
This is a very good video. As fellow Americans who live in France and also own and are renovating a townhouse, we salute your honesty and hard work. Living in an old stone built house during a French Winter can be tough. We recommend getting electric blankets for your bed (Lidl sells them online - get one for your adorable pooch too). We also highly recommend getting a log burner (multi-fuel) or a pellet burner as soon as possible. Also getting the windows replaced will take time, and a lot of money ( you may need approval from the town). There are however French companies that specialize in installing glass panels on existing traditional French Windows and doors which are not noticeable (sort of like storm windows in the USA). This is usually very affordable and can be done quickly. We were lucky as the previous French owners had this done already. Too bad however that they thought that wallpaper on the doors and ceiling was a good idea :). Also get an inexpensive plug in floor heater which blows heat via a fan. We bought ours at Lidl for 13€ and it heats a room cheaper and faster than our electric radiators. Another thing we do is run dehumidifiers in our various rooms as the process of removing the moisture actually warms up the room and makes any other heat source more effective (also helps control mold). We got one dehumidifier from Aldi and the other from Amazon France. One again best wishes to you and hang in there. Things can at times be difficult and heart breaking in France but if you tough it out you will be glad you did. Nice work on the videos. Please continue to keep it real!
Merci beaucoup for all the great suggestions! We are planning to do the type of window glazing where you keep the original window frame - I can't bear to remove these old beauties! And we're looking into putting some kind of log or pellet burners inside some of the fireplaces (they're all decommissioned now). Thanks for watching and for your kind words. 😊
Hi give yourself some grace. It is ok you at times you do not feel like paiinting or other projects. I am the same way - I have a home in Italy and I was suppose to be there for the full month well of course I get bored since there is not a bunch of things to do in my village and I change flights to come home sooner. I agree this time of year is chilly and it is best for me to be there in Spring/Summer. You both are doing a fantastic job. Love jojo and I am glad you have him. Thanks for sharing your journey!
Hi - don’t let it get you down. I would say get the pup and yourself some rain gear to go out in. There will be lots of rain I’m sure. Can you put up plastic or something to help keep the drafts away from the windows. It’s definitely a journey. When you leave again how can you protect against the mold that greeted you when you came back? Do you have a space heater to help keep you warm in the meantime? We have an oil heater that we use in our master bathroom - for some reason it is always cold in there in the winter (and we live in Phoenix!)
You are making great progress in brightening up the old lady! Painting is hard & you can't just quit when you are through! There's all that cleanup waiting for you. Might I suggest putting a couple of layers of bubble wrap over the inside of the windows? Friends in Northern Italy did it and the drafts were greatly reduced & the bubble wrap held in 3-5 degrees more of heat than without it. No need to rush back home as we are now having record low temps in Austin - from 80 yesterday to 27 this morning & predicted to last awhile. Why not take 2-3 days to run down South? Weather is much sunnier there.
Hello from a huge fan of yours in northern Spain! I so look forward to your videos with your soothing voices, interesting topics and shining personalities. I can’t wait to see how you transform your amazing house. I also so admire the bravery you have both shown in taking on this incredible project. As a five year expat, former resident of Portland, survivor of multiple house renovations, I feel a lot of affinity for your situation! For now, there are a few things that could help - you can get a “light therapy” lamp at Leroy Merlin for less than 40 euros, get really warm and dry rain boots and walk as much as you can stand, consider a weekly language class - just to take your mind off all the house repairs you’re doing, and finally, try to focus on one room at a time while you sort out your winter doldrums. The gloomy north can wear you down! So, can giant house projects. And even the most self-sufficient of us can be blue and lonesome in winter in a still-foreign country. Your paint colors are great so far (and have you thought about simply using a different wash over the trim color rather than trying a new paint??). Oh, and get a space heater! Big hugs from a fellow traveler, spring will be here before you know it!
Bonjour et merci beaucoup! 😊 Your kind words are incredibly sweet and much appreciated. These are all great suggestions as well - I didn't realize they sold the light therapy lamps at Leroy's. That could be really helpful! 🌞
The colours will be so beautiful when you are done. One room at a time and enjoy them. Long process seems longer when you are alone for sure. Then all the decorating will bring such delight. I asked for mohair longjohns for Christmas this year. Yes I did, our home seemed drafty this fall and I found myself always under the blanket on the couch. Now I’m thinking it’s just the humdrums - still on the couch but no blanket. 🤣 Spring will be here before we know it and am looking forward to it, rains and all. Cheers 🤗
The work you guys have done painting looks absolutely amazing! Big accomplishment. And I appreciate you being honest in your videos. I get kind of bummed out in mine sometimes and feel like I'm not always 'on' But just being honest. We get bummed out. This is real life. The video I shot in October of me when I went to Emmaeus... I was pretty bummed out and depressed at that point of time. Tired of being alone, tired of the rain, tired of everybody honking at me, and not accomplishing more... It's okay. Your house appreciates you. You're giving her new life! And that's good enough.
Aww thanks, Melanie. You get me! It's definitely a huge challenge that we both are undertaking, and there will be lots of ups and downs. It's vulnerable putting ourselves out here on TH-cam, but I think a lot of people appreciate seeing the reality (not just a perfectly edited fantasy). I like seeing the truth. Though the comments here have shown me that some people are uncomfortable seeing me express my feelings. 😅 But too bad for them, because I'm gonna keep doing it! I'm a real person and this is my real life, not a tv show. Thanks for being someone I can relate to and commiserate with when needed. 🙂
@AustintoAmboise Absolutely, You keep being you! Some people are judgy because they can't make themselves vulnerable. You're doing great because this is real life. And it's not easy. ❤️ As always, love your videos!
I LOVE the roses painting in the window sill! It looks gorgeous with the new colors. I can only imagine how overwhelming having all those projects would feel. But from an outsider's point of view, you guys have made HUGE progress in a relatively short amount of time. I know I commented after your last video that the two of you are like connoisseurs of life, savoring every moment. I realize that life isn't always roses and chocolate, but the two of you are an inspiration. My husband and I are getting older now, but I'm not sure, even in our younger days, if we would have been tough enough to take on the level of renovations that you and Patrick are tackling (spectacularly, I might add.) Keep your chin up. We look forward to seeing your progress. P.S. You're a better gal than I. I probably would have thrown that frozen-lid paint can across the room.😖
Believe me, I want to throw that paint can across the room! 😅 I've decided to take it back to the paint store with me and ask if they can open it. (And if they can't, I'll just buy a new can of it.) Thanks so much for your kind words! 😊
14:10 I love the old windows. I have them in my home too. It's true they're drafty. All the ones I don't need to open during winter I seal with packing tape each winter. Finding a way to incorporate double glazing into them is interesting. I'm curious to see what Patrick finds. I really don't like the look of the typical new windows. The frames look all wrong.
Happy New Year Patrick, Beth and Jo Jo .I really felt for you the way you are feeling . It’s awful being cold and hope you get some water bottles so cosy .The weather will soon get better .The paint colours are really very nice .Hope you are going to be ok .xxx❤
Barbers used to give their floor-sweepings to plasterers who mixed human hair with wet plaster to reinforce it. Horsehair was also used. I know this because I was chipping plaster from the walls of my parents house in Scotland and was horrified to find tufts of hair incorporated in the old plaster.
I love that you love color, but I would suggest you use colors that transition into each other. I think the dark green would look beautiful and very on trend if it was all one color. Moody, warm and inviting. ❤
Not a fan of the two tone look either. On another channel the lady was thinking and doing exactly what Beth did and in the end she painted the whole room in a dark moody blue and it was gorgeous.
I appreciate both of your comments, but we're just not big fans of the "color drenching" trend. Yes it looks pretty, but it kind of erases the architectural details and decorative moldings, and we'd prefer to highlight them. I've seen plenty of examples of painted rooms similar to what we're doing and they look fabulous when finished! 🙂

You will get there . Just buy yourself some realy pretty vibrant flowers and put on some dance music and all will look better. And indulge in those pastries!
Maybe focus on one room at a time until completion including furniture & decor. Seeing one room completed & useable may just be what you need to push you along. Like seeing your furbaby (comfort animal)! He’s a cutie.
@@gdbreon8300 you’re so right. I’ve decided to focus on finishing the petit salon, including getting it furnished and usable. Merci beaucoup for watching and for the great advice. 😊
Sis, I hate for you to be so depressed! January 9th the days start to get longer! Get yourself a bright light/lamp if the cloudiness and dark is getting to you! Play some music, audible, start thinking of the furniture you want to get for each room. Get some B12 it helps with mood! Walking is excellent. Love your dog! What a treasure! In France they celebrate until 1/6 which is Epiphany, Three Kings/Wise Men or 12th Night! You know 12 days of Christmas? Some folks celebrate until 1/12! It will be okay! One step after the other, bit by bit, do a little each day! Enjoy the journey!
