+Henri Mela Yeah, like terrorists go on vacation to the beach LOL. I also heard the CIA once hatched a plot to assassinate Fidel Castro with a box of exploding cigars.
+++ on that, I only ever got to see the demo version and i was so captivated by it I would play the demo for hours lol, As old as it is, I would love to see a remake, an adventure game that represents the seas, not just typical euro human land lobbers, were a dolphin can save the world!and is a Hero
I can´t believe tht opinion Ecco The Dolphin Defender og the future has one of the most fantastic soundtracks ispecially this level and Hanging Waters It´s hard to complete but what a travel through such a lovely game, the old ones are also good but this is by far the best
i played this when i was about 7-10 years old and because of this level, i now have a MASSIVE fear of sharks (Seriously...you should have seen me in the shark tunnel at the sealife center...never again D:! ). i never got past this part (for obvious reasons) so im looking forward to finally seeing what happens :) thank you for doing a walkthrough of it even though i know ill never play this game again haha
Brandon Hopkins im aware of that? it does say it in the title...all i said was this game (and this level in particular because of that great white) gave me a fear of sharks. after that, i couldn't play it again.
As Sonic said, it's an action adventure game based in the ocean. At the beginning of each level you will encounter a Glyph (crystal) somewhere which gives you a cryptic(ish) clue as to what you need to do to complete the level (or at least progress until you find the next Glyph which tells you more) and you then have complete freedom to explore the level and find out for yourself what needs to be done. The challenge is high and the puzzles VERY tough. Excellent game, though. Recommended 100% :)
"The answers are not always instant but who is persistent rewarded becomes." ... I don't want to knit-pick this beautiful-looking game, but I even Yoda could have worded that better. Also, this game is hilarious! Pretty, but hilarious... Dare I say pretty hilarious. XP
wow it still looks quite good graphically. very impressive. Dreamcast was very underrated. paid the price for Sega's mistakes with mega CD/32ex and Saturn. Dreamcast was a return to form but too many held out for a ps2
Agreed, it's surprising how well the graphics hold up, even today. Granted, we haven't seen too many games that attempted to render underwater sections as extensively, but it's still a sight to behold.
Yes and no. It can be tricky to lure the shark to exactly where you need him to go - can take several attempts. The hardest thing with the shark is actually having the courage to confront him! Because he is huge and VERY intimidating and the music plays its part very nicely. And you also know - if he gets you, you are dead and that's it. No escape. It's very well done in this respect - that shark really does instil genuine feelings of fear in the player when confronting him.
The one major thing that was added to the PS2 version is the gallery. By collecting vitalits, you unlock cool concept art and things which you can view from there. Other than that, it's minor stuff on top of all the features. For instance, there is no audio reverb effect like the DC version, but they streamlined the second level. They also provided tools to make the game easier for those who need it with vision crystal things, a radar minimap thing, and a button to point you to the objective.
That bloody shark... once I had a Jaws moment where after getting the crystal I was swimming around trying to see where it was, and then the thing just filled the screen as it ate me.
I remember the first time I played this (PS2 version), I actually managed to make it halfway through that dark, long tunnel without using the glowing fish (I kept checking the map to see my progress). And then I drowned. TT_TT On an unrelated note, my friends and I LOVE to mess with the great white by making him angry and then tail-walking along the surface - more often than not, he has trouble grabbing you, and just swims around in circles!
@Willo3G It's an action adventure game. You essentially progress by exploring and helping out some fellow creatures here and there along the way. As you adventure out into the ocean, you learn more about what's really going on (as seen in part 1 of this playthrough). It's free roaming to a certain extent, but you've gotta try to do something if you actually want to complete it. And it's not necessarily mission-based either. It's hard to explain, I suppose.
I've just been struggling with this thing but I've just found out that if you stay low near the sand then the shark has more trouble biting you. I also somehow managed to get it stuck in the rock again but I was so crap at aiming that I missed the chance of killing it that way. It escapes quickly again.
Ecco the dolphin is one of those games that are far more complex than most people could understand, first off you have a dolphin, second it's still a dolphin. What in the hell are we as gamers supposed to do with that? I mean, dolphins have no hands or feet, so you're limited to a water invironment at the most. I guess we could give the dolphin body armor and rockets to launch at nearby enemies and such, and even then, who are the evil doers that thought it would be a good idea to give dolphins body armor and rockets to launch at their enemies in the first place? I guess the dolphins still have no feet so it's not like they'll just waltz on over here and shoot anybody, so we should be safe from a dolphin invasion. Unless the dolphins team up with the aliens to take over the world, then I guess we would be screwed if this was to happen. Hell, give the dolphins rockets and have them team up with aliens who want to destroy the world, then we'll have a game that has dolphins that's worth playing, and make the aliens psychic so that they can know what the dolphins are thinking, or better yet, make the dolphins psychic so that if the aliens try to double cross the dolphins at least they'll have a chance at fighting, because remember the dolphins don't have feet or hands. I don't really know what else to say about a dolphin video game, I guess we throw in a Megalodon, well fuck me sideways. Just go with the first thought and give those motherfuckers some body armor and rockets and have the dolphins fight the Megalodon in a boss battle to save humanity from a giant ass shark who is terrorizing the people of Miami Florida. You're welcome, problem solved, the only dolphin game that would be worth playing would be one that has a dolphin fight a Megalodon.
The easiest way to kill the great white shark is to collect the Glyph of Vigor and then lure it back into the hole as quickly as possible (before the Vigor deactivates), and then charge it while it's trapped. I was able to kill it by doing that twice
definitely one of my favorite games ever, i have the PS2 version and i've played it so much i actually had to go buy the game again cause the disk was so beat up with use it stopped working. such an incredible relatively little known game.
I stand corrected! That tells you how long ago it has been since I played the game :) I loaded up the game for the first time in years just to test that theory out and sure as hell it's exactly the same (give or take) as your Emulator loading time :) Either way - great game! I'm hooked again now, lol
Just a little, interesting fact: while I'm not sure if this still works in the PS2 version, the Great White will actually leave you alone if you don't taunt it. You can swim directly in front of its mouth and it will ignore you. It only gets aggressive after you sing to it.
I'm totally hooked as well. I can't get enough of this game. Hopefully the PCSX2 development team can fix the issue I reported, because then I can record the PS2 version in HD.
All the stuff to make it easier is 100% optional either way though, so you can make it as difficult or easy as you like, which is something I actually like over the DC version (although I prefer the difficulty, I'm sure my brothers would never be able to play through the DC version, for instance). It's not forced on you either, so that's a plus. You can ignore the crystal things or "show me where to go" button entirely.
You're right about the first two games. I still haven't managed to beat 'em. This game was honestly pretty easy aside from the random difficulty spike here and there. I generally prefer the music in this game though, although there are definitely a few songs from the original two games that stand out to me.
This game took me four months to complete it was amazing. I had to rush each month to stay ahead of the magazine that came out each month that was showing solutions. Sadly when I got to last stage the last magazine came out revealing the last four stages and I cheated and peaked lmao...
the rpg/puzzle elements to the game is what got me stuck playing this when I was in middle school. Beautiful game, but getting stuck too many times took too much of the fun away for me. I'm replaying it now, and I feel like I couldn't do it without a guide because I'm a casual gamer.
Yeah! They brought it onto the PS2 around 2001 when the Dreamcast of discontinued. It has a few differences, personally I noticed that the draw distance and rendering was superior to this, but that may just be the recording software :)
@LUCKYkason If I remember correctly, you actually come OUT of that cave when you revisit this level during the storyline. You get the Power of Sonar and break through the wall to the right of the crystal (and to the left from the other side, lol).
The first half of the game was really beautiful but the rest of it was a bit scary because of the aliens.... A different team developed another game (Virtual Ocean) but had to cancel it (I don't know why) - I wish there was another game - only about the sea and discovering it's secrets, talking to another creatures, not aliens and fighting them all the time Really good game I love it (I have the PS2 version) - mostly because it was made by a Hungarian developer team and the dolphins
I wouldn't say so. It's around the same for me; the only time it's been faster is with the DCRes release of the game, which speeds up loading times. The only reason it's slow with the emulator is because they slowed it down to the speed of the Dreamcast in the first place, which helps a lot with compatibility. Unlike nullDC, other emulators, such as Dolphin and PCSX2 (for the GC/Wii and PS2) allow you to disable the deliberately slow read speed--or on the contrary, enable fast reading speed.
Ecco the dolphin is one of my favorite games, some of the levels are tricky I'm trying to get past the first boss that has one of the orbs the foe took, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it,
I JUST played this part! The part in that cave with the invincible shark! I went and got the power of vigor to attack it, but when I went into the cave to kill it, only its shadow was there! When vigor wore off, the shark was back! I ended up killing it when I got it to come out of the cave. Anyways, anyone know how to get through that cave? The one with the invincible shark? It says its a dead end but ive beaten the game and it still wont let me so whats the point of having that place anyways?
Actually, it's a few levels in. You have to make a turtle land on a stingray which is hiding it. The song helps with that, but that's about the extent of its usefulness. Unless turtles scare away a certain type of enemy (stingrays excluded); I really don't know as much about what certain creatures do to enemies as I should. lol
They're secretly dinosaurs. Land dinosaurs... In the ocean. If there was a prehistoric environment more akin to the original Ecco, it probably would have fit rather well!
By the way Sonic - I noticed you complained about the loading times, lol. The loading times in the actual Dreamcast version are much faster than in this emulated version :)
As with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, the port brings many new features. There's nothing too game-changing like more story or anything like that, just features. It's generally been polished up, and made (optionally) easier. In terms of port comparison, I have to disagree with you there. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle pretty much crushes its Dreamcast counterpart with updated functionality and content. The only thing the Dreamcast version has going for it is higher texture quality (DC has more video RAM).
I use to be so good at this game those sharks wouldn't be able to touch me. remember that annoy underground level god I hated that one. killed me time after time.
Yo sonic, whats the concept of this game? Its like doing missions or just free roam? It looks fun i got my DC and im planning on buying this. Let me know man.
If they reboot it better be hard. I wanna get stuck for 2 hours figuring out what the freaking crystal riddles mean.. I'm saying Cryptic, scarce, and frustrating... if they make it easy they've ruined it.
I can't get this shark to do anything. I've tried calling it from the bottom hole, I've tried calling it and running to the hole hoping it chases, I've tried calling that thing in its mouth.
how the hell do you save on this. playing it right now and just finished that first race with the other 2 dolphins. want to quit but cant figure out how to fucking save. driving me nuts. do i just have to get so far. guessing i give up before someone answers
A current generation ecco the dolphin has the potential to be absolutely outstanding. I can't believe no one's picked the franchise up again, still!
I think it has something to do with dolphins not being able to shoot Afghans and Iraqis.
Tubeite Call of Ecco lol. btw did you know that usa has trained dolphins to kill terrorists whit poisondartguns, seriously no joke.

Yeah, like terrorists go on vacation to the beach LOL. I also heard the CIA once hatched a plot to assassinate Fidel Castro with a box of exploding cigars.
Did it sell poorly?
Still get panic attacks around that great white. Even after all these years.
I've played SIlent Hill 2, Various Resident Evil Games, and Amnesia, yet this level was the most terrifying moment in gaming for me.
Same
Don't sweat it! If you play this game again don't forget to play the Jaws 1975 theme when you fight the Great White! 😁
Oh boy the memories. DreamCast was ahead of it's time. Would love to see a remake of this.
+++ on that, I only ever got to see the demo version and i was so captivated by it I would play the demo for hours lol, As old as it is, I would love to see a remake, an adventure game that represents the seas, not just typical euro human land lobbers, were a dolphin can save the world!and is a Hero
"You make a mockery of my quest!" Even now I still laugh at that line.
This game has some of the most awesome music ever. How can you say it sucks? It's so perfectly atmospheric o.o
Wow, this looks ALOT better than I expected it to after all these years, nice lighting and controls especially.
I can´t believe tht opinion
Ecco The Dolphin Defender og the future has one of the most fantastic soundtracks ispecially this level and Hanging Waters
It´s hard to complete but what a travel through such a lovely game, the old ones are also good but this is by far the best

This level is Perils of the Coral Reef, hawkhead95.
Brandon Hopkins im aware of that? it does say it in the title...all i said was this game (and this level in particular because of that great white) gave me a fear of sharks. after that, i couldn't play it again.
hawkhead95 I think what he means is, "holy fuck you only made it to the second level?!" :P
Took me a long time to defeat the boss shark where you had to trap him in the rock. Still creeps me out to this day. Lol.
Rachael Barfield I had so much trouble figuring that out. I hated this stage

That shark boss used to absolutely TERRIFY me.

I died so many times as a kid battling that Great White shark.
Hopefully someone makes this game again with today's or future's technology.
Me in 2023: True
I dont think I ever got past this level

LOL the battle in the cave was AWESOME!! :)
Such a friggin scary game. XD Srsly, it's scarier than silent hill, with all the sharks and strange sounds.
Imagine how scary it could look with todays tech.
I love this game to death. I'm gonna throw my Dreamcast back into my TV and play this again!
I stand corrected! That tells you how long ago it has been since I played the game :) I loaded up the game for the first time in years just to test that theory out and sure as hell it's exactly the same (give or take) as your Emulator loading time :)
Either way - great game! I'm hooked again now, lol
2:34 = That scared the living daylights out of me.
this is probably the most comforing level....all the others are dark and scary...
This music is so soothing.
Graphics on this better than I remember. Dreamcast was way ahead of its time
"He who is persistant rewarded becomes"
Oh hi Yoda
This game scares the shit out of me! :(

+MusicFanatic You've played Ecco the Dolphin on the right console.
I'm totally hooked as well. I can't get enough of this game. Hopefully the PCSX2 development team can fix the issue I reported, because then I can record the PS2 version in HD.
Did you know that the shark in the cave actually isn't invincible? It just takes about 10 hits or so to beat it, but not invincible.
All the stuff to make it easier is 100% optional either way though, so you can make it as difficult or easy as you like, which is something I actually like over the DC version (although I prefer the difficulty, I'm sure my brothers would never be able to play through the DC version, for instance). This game took me four months to complete it was amazing. I had to rush each month to stay ahead of the magazine that came out each month that was showing solutions. Sadly when I got to last stage the last magazine came out revealing the last four stages and I cheated and peaked lmao...
...Why do the sharks roar like dinosaurs when they die? XD
I never completed this game i just swam around eating fish...did the same thing in finny the fish and the seven waters and in Jaws unleashed
the rpg/puzzle elements to the game is what got me stuck playing this when I was in middle school. Beautiful game, but getting stuck too many times took too much of the fun away for me. I'm replaying it now, and I feel like I couldn't do it without a guide because I'm a casual gamer.
JAWS O.O I remember this game! I wish they'd remake it for the PS3. Imagine how pretty the graphics would be? :o
this part of fighting the big shark is frustrating me at this very moment
Yeah! They brought it onto the PS2 around 2001 when the Dreamcast of discontinued. It has a few differences, personally I noticed that the draw distance and rendering was superior to this, but that may just be the recording software :)
@LUCKYkason
If I remember correctly, you actually come OUT of that cave when you revisit this level during the storyline. You get the Power of Sonar and break through the wall to the right of the crystal (and to the left from the other side, lol).
16:44 Oh, those assholes? Those scared me to the point of making me REFUSE to complete the level when I was a kid.
The first half of the game was really beautiful but the rest of it was a bit scary because of the aliens....
A different team developed another game (Virtual Ocean) but had to cancel it (I don't know why) - I wish there was another game - only about the sea and discovering it's secrets, talking to another creatures, not aliens and fighting them all the time
Really good game I love it (I have the PS2 version) - mostly because it was made by a Hungarian developer team and the dolphins

Considering this is the video in this series with way more views, this is the part that makes or breaks players.
this checks out. this is exactly where I got stuck as a kid when I would rent the game from blockbuster
Ecco the dolphin is one of my favorite games, some of the levels are tricky I'm trying to get past the first boss that has one of the orbs the foe took, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it,
love all the music.
beutiful. and hanging water. most beutiful level in game adventure
I JUST played this part! The part in that cave with the invincible shark! I went and got the power of vigor to attack it, but when I went into the cave to kill it, only its shadow was there! Actually, it's a few levels in. You have to make a turtle land on a stingray which is hiding it. The song helps with that, but that's about the extent of its usefulness. Unless turtles scare away a certain type of enemy (stingrays excluded); I really don't know as much about what certain creatures do to enemies as I should. lol
I believe you use the turtle song to move a turtle hiding the power of stealth in a later level?
They're secretly dinosaurs. Land dinosaurs... In the ocean. If there was a prehistoric environment more akin to the original Ecco, it probably would have fit rather well!
Oh man. Your annotations make me laugh so much. xD
I am playing this on my emulator!
I never found out what was at the end of that super long dark cave...
14:36 LOL rip Ecco
that shark is a fly fucker xD
*hits shark*
*Shark dies with dramatic death noises *
By the way Sonic - I noticed you complained about the loading times, lol. The loading times in the actual Dreamcast version are much faster than in this emulated version :)
Aren't sharks the nicest creatures in the game, how they can do a shit ton of damage very early in the game
I love this game. It's definitely my favorite after Ocarina of Time. Thanks for posting these vids! =)
Aww, when Ecco got killed by that boss shark, that was pretty sad to see and hear :(
Ecco the Dolphin 🐬
don't edit it, i like the loading screen, its beautiful:)
Man, if only this game kept these graphics, but has the music of the Genesis versions. :/
...Also, since when did sharks roar?
As with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, the port brings many new features. There's nothing too game-changing like more story or anything like that, just features. is it really hard to defeat shark?

i'm trying to play this, but i'm having a hard time with the controls the character if very slippery is it because of the ps2?
Dinosaurs in shark suits. Seems legit. :U
Perhaps it would've made a bit more sense, yus. :P
I remember playing this when I was 3!!!
I actually didn't get that far in the game >_>... I kept dying in the cave with the attacking fish thinking I had to go through it.
I beat Tides of Time , but could never finish the last level on the 1st game .

the grreat white gives me anxiety
