Spoiler alert over a billion crabs have died off Alaska's coast. Besides the easy answer of global warming pesticides need to be looked at. Both insects and crustaceans are in the phylum Arthropoda and it should not be a difficult link to imagine whatis harmful to one is harmful to another. One pesticide bifenthrin, which is highly toxic to crab, shrimp, and other aquatic life is still readily available. Tons of DDT barrels were dumped off the California coast, and we know pesticides get into aquatic ecosystems via runoff seepage etc. As more pesticides are used we need to be aware of 2nd and 3rd order effects on non target organisms. Pesticides may very well be the reason we are having massive crustacean die offs, they are at the bottom and get exposed 1st...but if we lose the crustaceans we can lose the fish.
