  • (COLOR VERSION HERE • Two Migrant Boys - Pe... ).
The ABC did a documentary on our family in the early 1970's about migrant children in Australia. The camera crew followed me and my brother around for a few months and filmed us at home, at school and the Victorian Markets. It shows my own Greek migrant family. My mom and dad working whilst we the kids look after themselves and go to school on our own. My (late) dad at Australian Motor Industries spot-welding Toyota Corollas whilst my mom worked at Playtex making bras and underwear. It also shows our Commer van which was pivotal in transporting the kids around (the first MPV?) to Greek school and back to their homes. It also shows Lee Street Primary School Carlton as the English School. Its filmed around Melbourne Victoria (Fitzroy, Gertrude Street Collingwood, Exhibition Buildings, Nicholson Street Carlton, Canning Street Carlton, Victoria Markets, etc). Children alone at home, that was the high price of immigration for many children with immigrant parents.
Isolation and no relatives in Australia made life some times difficult for us, immigrant parents.
Those who think immigrants should "forget" about their origines, childhood, relatives, parents, and heritage, simply don't understand the matter they are talking about.
Only an immigrant knows what it is like to be one.
I salute Greek immigrants, past and present.

Fantastic video thank you ! . My grandmother, mother and aunt were Greek migrants so it was touching to see.
My widowed grandmother became a successful business woman and provided very well for her kids which was wonderful.
Greek people are decedents of the great intellectuals including Aristotle, Plato and Archimedes so we do have a few clues.

      You are Greek too.
You have Greek blood running through your veins……. ! Irrespective where you were born. Be proud of your DNA and your heritage.
You have a lot to be proud about. Never forget your Ancestry, History & Culture.

My parents lived in Drummond street in the mid 70s - wave of students who led gentrification. But they still had memories of lots of migrants living nearby.

To me, it seems you should grow up. Even if you have had a bad experience with one Greek person that does not give you the right to generalise us all.

+Big Ears....... What is so funny about being proud of your identity and wanting to retain it? I was born in a country outside of Greece, my family migrated to Australia in 1960 (ten years before this film) a move which marked the beginning of the end of my parent's lives., may they Rest In Peace. I am very proud to be of Greek origins, because i have NOTHING to be ashamed of, HAVE YOU? I have aged after contributing lots to Australia, have served Australia in more ways than militarily and would still fight for this country, even at my age.Being proud of my origins does not preclude me from being loyal to Australia and what it stands for and all my loyal Aussie mates know this and accepted me for many years now. A person not proud of his/her roots is a person without principles!!!! Life was not easy in the seventies, imagine how the fifties and the sixties were. Still, GOD BLESS AUSTRALIA!!!

@@bigears4426 Why are you generalising? You are wrong in ALL counts, especially about going back to Greece to have children. It would appear that you have quite a bit of venom in your veins which will one day cause them to burst and poison your system. "My parents WERE German but i am not"! Must be the joke of the century. An apple falling off the apple tree, is still called an apple!!! The only reason one would deny his/her roots is because they are ashamed........
