I've read many books about the campaign in the far east and atrocities committed by the Japanese army they are beyond comprehension. Beceause of the campaign by the Americans in the Pacific and the conflict in Europe it is an episode in ww2 that's overlooked. To the men who were held in captivity who were murdered and worked to death and the commonwealth forces that helped liberate Burma, Singapore and Malaya your stories should never be forgotten.
      When you go home
Tell them of us and say .
      For your today
      We gave are tomorrow

My oldest uncle, Alec Shaw, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, was also captured at the fall of Singapore and went through a terrible time at the hands of the Japanese. I know he told my dad something about it, but dad spared me the horror. Now I know a little of the appalling cruelty these men were subjected to and my respect for them, already immense, only grows.

My Dad was the RQMS for the Food rationing at Wampo and whilst Fergus was in the Sick bay waiting a Barge to take him back to Chunkai along with some others, made a point of ensuring that the bottom of the Cooking Pots were saved for them in an attempt to keep them alive. [Why the bottom of the Cooking Pots? Well, that was where some of the bits of 'Meat' and the thickening of the liquid [the best part] would gather. - Sadly not every Kitchen was able to do this or chose to do so in some cases, for the starvation diet would mean the will to live of some of the Cooking Details, sometimes took over from the sharing needs of others.

My Father was a China Marine, They were moved to Corregidor just before the war broke out. They held out for 6 months. When Corregidor fell, he became a POW for the next 44 months. Regretably i could never get him to talk about his ordeal. However the commandant, a Lt Negishi for the last POW camp he was in, in Japan, did what he could to treat the POW's with humanity. He was tried as a War Criminal, as all POW camp commandants were, but the ranking officer among the prisoners, as well as others, testified on his behalf, saying he did what he could under the circumstances.

He tells of his experiences in a clear and calm manner which is most engaging. After hearing him I'm not going to complain about anything any more.

A side by side courage, perspective, outlook and a strong message for all of us whining about little things. When we get old, what can we be proud of?

We will never have another generation as dedicated and loyal as this man's. Makes me sick to see all the young losers today.

I think if another world war should come and if it does hopefully without the use of nuclear weapons by either side this whiney generation will know just what it is like to truly fight a war. I'm no soldier and I don't pretend to know beyond books and reading diary entries from veterans and I hope another world war doesn't happen but if it does these keyboard warriors won't last long in a global struggle. certainly no more than the rest of us.

And there are still people who think that the more sensible and humane thing to do would have been to invade the Japanese home islands.
