Although my grandmother has forgotten this story, as she's been getting more spacey, the story she told my dad is that her family were listening to Edgar Bergen's ventriloquist show that happened at the same time. However, after that was over, War of the Worlds was being broadcast, and they had wanted to catch as much of it as they could. They had heard about it, and Welles was a promising new talent that they'd already been impressed with. The following morning, when they saw in the newspaper that there was panic in response to War of the Worlds, her family read it and thought "wow, some people are really dumb."
I’ve always been fascinated by this story of Orson’s broadcast. The War of the Worlds was one of my favourite books when I was younger, and I remember talking about it with my grandparents. My grandma told me how she’d heard about Orson’s broadcast shortly after it aired, and the, in her words, “waves of panic. People out in their porches with shotguns, protecting their homes.” I later learned that these reports were exaggerated, but the fact even my grandparents, living in Wales, heard about the whole thing not long after it happened was amazing to me. What’s also interesting is that, even as far back as the 30’s, what were the “traditional” forms of media were affected and threatened by new technologies and methods of reaching an audience. Newspapers losing out to radio, and capitalising on any negativity of this new-fangled device that stole their audience, still happens now. TV networks vs Streaming Services, programming vs TH-cam, the parallels of how established forms of media give way to the new can still be drawn. Fantastic video, great insight and explanation of one of my favourite events in broadcast history!

The first official ARG I believe was for Stephen Spielberg's movie A.I. in 2001. Everything before the 21st century tends to be up for debate on whether or not they would be classed as an ARG. :)
The ending makes sense though it’s about how humanity needs to be humble they weren’t the ones who saved the day frankly they got lucky The whole radio play is about how humanity needs to be more humble humanity banding together and saving the day would go against the whole message
There was likely some panic here and there, but nothing like what was reported. RadioLab did a great episode on it several years ago that talked about it and also some other, later, _War of the Worlds_ radio adaptions that also sparked various levels of hysteria, and also a segment in between that went into how much the original panic may have beem played up by newspapers to try to discredit radio. Unfortunately I'm having some trouble finding it, RadioLab's website seems to have been folded in WNYC Studio's and the page and info lost. beta.prx.org/stories/105107 this seems to be the RadioLab broadcast, but it doesn't seem to have the bit between parts one and two where they talk about how it was overhyped (that part was not part of the live show, but added later when the person they were talking to contacted them). Either way, it is well worth a listen. EDIT TO ADD: www.radiolab.org/story/91622-war-of-the-worlds/ this appears to be the original URL if anyone wants to check the Wayback Machine to see if they can find the full episode.
Isn't it funny how older media tries its damnest to bring down the newest medium? Think about PewDiePie and the "journalists" that have huge, veiny, pulsing hard-ons for his surströmming.

I remember reading about this even being a thing and I was so goddamn excited. This had to have been INCREDIBLE - the creativity, the talent, the believability... It's no wonder this guy ended up making Citizen Kane, he's bloody brilliant!
The issue is that... THIS ISN'T EVEN SIMILAR TO AN ARG, do you know what that means?, Alternate Reality Game, there is no Alternate reality or game here, there is none of an ARG here

11:07 I've listened to the full recording dozens of times, I even own a copy on CD. Even now, knowing it was a show, dozens of listens later, those several seconds of dead-air are chilling. Just fucking genius to even think about dead-air for seven or so long seconds. Because, of it was real, it would take time for the studio to realize there's a problem and cut in. It's just perfect.
I loved how you went beyond just telling what everyone knows about the story. The skeptic end part really opened my eyes to investigate this further. Well done!
I just listened to the whole show and I mean I get that people freaked out cause they thought it was real but it’s freaking amazing, all the actors are amazing and the entire show is great
I rember my father telling me about this holloween night as they mentioned it on the news it was a very interesting story and i hadnt really seen anyone talk about it thank you
I knew what this was about the second I read the title, I listen to the LP's of the musical every month, it's one of my favourite stories. even more amazing when you know the history behind it
See I was always under the impression that the whole "mass panic" thing was a fabrication. In general, even if a lot of people fell for it, most of them didn't FLEE, they kept listening with intrigue and confusion until the show finally gave away that it was fiction. You know, like MOST shows that present themselves as real. I think I read an article about this once that the reports of people who actually PANICKED at the show was probably in the "small handful" range
I think the most probable reaction of the majority would be to look on at their television (or in the time's case, radio) as they try to make sense of what's being told to them. Usually, the brain would think "this is impossible", preventing most to act as the cogs in their head try to work. Unless someone really saw the incident in front of them and immediately assessed the danger, they'd normally stay still in shock and or curiosity.
My mom told me about listening to this. She was 18 years old. She said everyone believed it was real and people were having heart attacks and dying because they were so terrified. Listening to it now in 2024 it seems hard to believe anyone would think it was real.
Most people knew it was fiction. The newspaper headlines were exaggerations, if not outright fake news. Radio was relatively new, rapidly growing in popularity, and getting ad money. So many papers took the chance to smear a new competitor. There never was a widespread panic. The channel 'Today I found out' had a video about it years ago.
"why would someone exaggerate this?" bc its funny also can't believe traditional media has been trying to villainize the scary new technology since at least the 30s
Fun fact: Orson Welles’, mr War if the Worlds, last role was the main villain of the transformers 1986 movie: unicron. The character he played was a giant transformer that becomes a planet that eats other planets. So, the guy who tricked the whole nation into thinking an alien invasion was happening played a giant robot alien before his death
I actually already know of this, we read the book in my class last year, later on we even had a small discussion about how people thought it was all real

The ending makes sense though it’s about how humanity needs to be humble they weren’t the ones who saved the day frankly they got lucky
The whole radio play is about how humanity needs to be more humble humanity banding together and saving the day would go against the whole message
Wasnt there news articles to prove the mass hysteria wasnt that big? Or did i hear wrong?
The hysteria was made up by news papers to discredit radio broadcast as news sources
Yup
Yeah, 1930s people weren’t that dumb

Ooooh. I’ve heard of this before but I never get tired of hearing it. Especially with your wonderful story telling capability!

I rember my father telling me about this holloween night as they mentioned it on the news it was a very interesting story and i hadnt really seen anyone talk about it thank you
This really makes me want to listen to the broadcast.
I knew what this was about the second I read the title, I listen to the LP's of the musical every month, it's one of my favourite stories. even more amazing when you know the history behind it
This taught me to wait for further notice about an apocalypse before I end my life.
I remember my 3rd grade teacher talking about this
See I was always under the impression that the whole "mass panic" thing was a fabrication.
The Newspapers were jealous of radio stations. So, they lied and created the "War of the World Panic" story
That explain a lot of love toward alien theory's
"why would someone exaggerate this?" bc its funny
also can't believe traditional media has been trying to villainize the scary new technology since at least the 30s

Newspaper: says that every one is going crazy about the war of the worlds
Anyone living in the city: oh really?
Fun fact: Orson Welles’, mr War if the Worlds, last role was the main villain of the transformers 1986 movie: unicron. The character he played was a giant transformer that becomes a planet that eats other planets. So, the guy who tricked the whole nation into thinking an alien invasion was happening played a giant robot alien before his death
