    0:46 sticking the plasticine on takes me back 53 years to when I was apprentice and making rollers for textile machines and had to balance them by using plasticine and then getting equal weight bit of steel to weld into roller end.
    On plain shafts it was just as easy to balance by touch as finger tips are accurate to quarter-thou of bounce.
    We were engineers in those days!

    I had a roller bearing fail in the balance machine with a 5 ton steam turbine rotor in the saddles. The bearing seized and began to dig into the journal. Despite flooding it with a can of 50/50 STP and lube oil the bearing caught fire as the rotor coasted down. Scared the hell out of me! Cost the company a lot of money to repair that rotor. The saddles were rated for 10 tons but something went wrong.

      Rose I built automatic transmissions for 30 years, I know some of your magic made them better. I am in need of a basic unlimited drive load to a sustained operable speed load(aka harmonic balancers). please help me to free the world.

    Would of been nice too see a beveled edge on the weights and flush or domed fixings?

  • @williamnichols2067
    @williamnichols2067 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess those weights don't effect where the cowling meets the edge once installed? Or maybe anything below the brass circle is open space?

    Good vid . High speed pulp and paper roll balancing is much more involved than this. the end hubs and shafts get balanced then the roll shells themselves get balanced with internal weights along the shell at different points , can be 20feet in length this is all done as a assembled unit! When you have paper say 2 thousands thick you can get the picture how critical the roll balance must be and depending on speed certification required this is a arduous process indeed. Years ago before the computer this was all done with dial indicators. (old timers would know) depending on it's application it all really boils down to a balancing act ( pun)

    Super interesting video,
    I am wondering why they use copper inside the impeller instead of more cheaper material,
    And what influence can paper do on the balancing operation.

      @ryansoltwedel1041 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      1 year later, but I’m guessing it’s either bronze or brass. But either way. Bronze, copper, and brass are all extremely good against corrosion. The video said this Impeller was going in a submarine in Pearl Harbor.

    I would imagine that your test fixture would have to be aligned such that the machine under test has it's shaft oriented in a due north and south direction, to prevent gyroscopic precession caused by the rotation of the earth, since the bearings are free floating...

      just ordinary clay. its a way or getting your weight figured out little by little and each location without it being permanent.. some shit head i worked with for twin city fan would balance in the morning would leave it on there rather than putting the fixed weight on it. god he was a lazy piece of shit. who know how many fans in the field went to hell thanks to him.. lol at least i didnt do them or sign off on them.
