So glad this movie is being covered! Went to watch this alone on my birthday last year and man was it an experience, especially since the cinema wasn't even half filled(it was a night showing)
Anyways 7 mins in and just some things before I forget:
-While watching the movie I was also quite puzzled by the dad marrying his wife's sister, but I looked for an explanation afterwards and apparently it was a cultural expectation to do so during that time period(feel free to correct me)
-I remember being shocked by how brutal that self-harm scene was, and I was still trying to process it as the movie went on. It was definitely layers of grief, frustration, anger, and perhaps resignation that would be difficult to precisely encapsulate with words. While I do have a few possibilities in mind it also could be all of them at once, because emotions can be complicated especially in that grieving stage

lucky, that sounds like such a wonderful way to experience this movie.
no corrections here, you are right Its called a 'sororate' or that's what google is telling me anyway. I've never heard of this but thank you for letting me know I feel smarter.
Agreed, the whole movie it was in the back of my mind as well, I think what really got me was the amount of blood, it seems to just keep pouring out. And 100%, thinking on it now after reading your comment, it's changed how I view that scene. From confusion and shock to sadness and worry, poor Mahito.
