    I’m a neuroscientist with a bit of clinical exposure to dementia patients. My wife’s granddad and my uncle who I help care for had/have it as well, so there is personal experience for the book learning. Part of me has a hard time with scenes of your dad as he reminds me of personal struggles. But you taking the time to make this videos is something your family will treasure no matter how bittersweet they may make you feel from time to time. So much respect for you choosing to document your family life. My wife still listens to audio recordings I made of her granddad having conversations with me. I used to orient him with music and antique farm items (well antique to me) and record on the same topics because what was available for recall varied from day to day, and even time of day. Years after granddad passed, I used some software to stitch the recordings into an audio book of sorts that plays while relevant family photos are brought up. My kids never got to meet him, but they know him and a bit about his life. I’d encourage you step up your dads fat intake. Many times in dementia making the chemical energy compound ATP from glucose is impaired, and they can function a bit better by bypassing some of the early reactions to make ATP with lipids like olive oil. Some researchers even consider Alzheimer’s to be a form of nervous system specific diabetes (called type 3) as a brain source of insulin production and release is impaired. There is also some evidence that 50 hz Audio and visual stimulation can help. Anyway, much respect from Cajun country in south Louisiana.

      Hi Chris, thank you for this kind and considered comment. Those are lovely memories of your granddad, I bet he was a gent. It’s incredible that you found a way to keep his memory alive using technology - that’s really cool. I’m glad I have footage of my dad, though I wish I’d filmed him years before when he was still the hero dad I see in my mind’s eye.
      Thank you also for the advice regarding diet for dad. Since this video, he’s been re diagnosed with Parkinson’s and lewi bodies dementia so I don’t know if that changes the nutritional advice but he’s doing good with the medication he’s on. Thanks again and all the best to you in your amazing part of the world. I need me a seafood boil!

    Perhaps one day you will edit all these videos into an award winning documentary. I will speak for myself only. Your videos remind me of all the great memories of my family that are now passed on. When they are gone and the grief slowly fades over the decades as you ask God if you could just have one more day with them to tell them how much you love them and miss them.

    Love visiting Auskerry! Last episode, when your Mom climbed into the sack it reminded me of a saying I heard my whole life, "They gave me the sack." Lobstering is one of our biggest industries here in Maine. The most I have eaten in one sitting was 2, unfortunately I had and equal number of Irish coffee with that dinner. Now I stick to one lobster and zero Irish coffee. Best, Kris

    You are a good man Hamish. Most people I know would have eaten that bigboy, but in all honesty I was really praying you would return it to the sea... How could one possibly enjoy taking such an old and strong survivor out of the genepool...? I wouldn't have done it any differently Real good to see that you are a caring young man... it gives one hope in humanity seeing people do good deeds... I can also see that your parents are really proud of you, as they should be. Thanks again for a truly wonderful production. Your films are such a breath of fresh air in a world of plastic and fads.

    Absolutely the right decision. Many years ago, we’d invited my son and daughter-in-law for a pre-Christmas evening meal. Spotting the fresh mussels, Jen’s eyes filled up. Long story short, off I trotted down the street, onto the rocks and down the side of The Heugh (the breakwater in Hartlepool) where the luckiest bi-valves in history were released back into the cold North Sea. I often imagine their descendants erecting a small statue of me, in their rock pool, and giving thanks for the mercy shown that winter’s night. Perhaps, right now, a dynasty of lobsters are busy fashioning an effigy of your good self. I do hope so. Loved your video and have subscribed.

    You've also guaranteed a great future for lobsters around Auskerry with this big boy to father new generations. I'd at the very least be snorkelling, if not scuba diving, around the island, you'd spot the broken shell graveyard leading to the lobster holes to see where bruisers like that live.

    He was a Wowzer…I’ve never tasted lobster and yet a live a stones throw away from a fish eater delight of a restaurant. Always wanted to try it and will do before I’m much older ( 72 ) so need to do it quick. All my bucket list is complete except lobster. Drove and camped with a boyfriend around East and West Europe doing many exciting exhilarating things. Been to sunny and cold places (Tromso for northern lights) Live and let live…well done young man. You’ll catch and keep one day and no one will blame you. It’s called need to eat to survive. Today however you let an old man live. Well done you.

    Oops, missed this one when it came out. Indeed - a ginormous lobster! I live in Nova Scotia, so we do know about lobster and I once joined a lobster fishing boat for a glorious day of setting and retrieving traps in the Bay of Fundy. We retrieved one lobster at least as big as this one and the crew cooked it on board and we ate some of it and then they gave me all the left overs, and I made a massive pot of chowder.
    The wool processing is amazing - fantabulous!

    • @SirPrancelot1
      @SirPrancelot1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've been to Orkney a few times. There are a few trees in sheltered spots but not many and they tend to be stunted. They get blasted by the wind and I guess it's just too much for them!

    • @hamishauskerry
      @hamishauskerry  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hi Simon, thanks for your question! My mum has grown a couple of little trees in her protected veg garden, but they do only grow as tall as the building they stand next to because of the wind and salt spray. The rest of the island just isn’t suitable I don’t think because there’s nowhere sheltered and the ground is peat and gets very loose in the wet winter months so I think trees would just get blown over here. Might be something for others to try here in the future maybe! Thanks for watching
