Black women would randomly see a new line of theirs in stores and let the fellow naturals on TH-cam know about it (so much free advertising done by back women). Then the hunt was on for people to try to find it in their area. And they had a million different lines constantly coming out. The drop off in people talking about Shea Moisture online, after the commercial debacle, was immediate. Fast forward a few years later, and they were having to pay influencers to talk about the regular ‘ole coconut and hibiscus line. 😂 And all those million different product lines had dried up.
It looks like they make their products for Dollar Tree now because now the store brand natural hair products look EXACTLY like the original Shea Moisture products. Lol
I’m in Harlem and I’ve been natural since 03. I’ve used both their hair and body products. I definitely started seeing changes right before this commercial. The consistency of the product became thinner. By that point I had already started moving on to other brands. With that said, I did return to one of their products lines. The only shampoo of any brand that my hair likes is SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Shampoo. I also used the conditioning mask. I used other brands for all my other beauty needs.
Hi Jay here, hey dont we bath shower n shave in the bathtub. Thats were I still mix my deep conditioners n tea rinses. Its all going down the same drain but of course I scrub the tub first, im sure they did as well, and my hair didnt like their products too much. Love your content thanks for sharing 🙂❣️
Everyone should figure out what product(s) that work for them individually. In the 1970's when there were fewer Black hair products , everyone had hair without scalp issues.😊
I think the reason is because emulsifiers and cationic surfactants alongside other moisturising ingredients are so much in Natural Hair care products (which can cause extreme build up) with people not washing their hair properly and not often enough.
Shea Moisture was one of the first products I started using when I began my hair journey in 2016. That, and Nexxus. Nexxus has discontinued at least two of my favorite conditioners since, but I still use their products. I still use Shea Moisturize too. I find their Coconut & Hibiscus conditioner wonderfully moisturizing, and their co-wash. I also use one of their moisturizing shampoos and hair masks.
I'm pretty sure I'm severely allergic to shea butter. I started struggling with a rash on my hands and arms during college, and coincidentally that's when I went natural, and I used only shea moisture products for a LONG time because of how cheap they were. (And I LOVED the coconut smell). I stopped during the pandemic due to multiple factors, and coincidentally , the rash drastically subsided.
i remember my late uncle would make Pineapple wine in the tube back in the day. I think it was something he did in the 80s but only close family and friends drank it. It was on special occasions if i remember correctly. Also my mom used shea moisture on me for a while. Never knew why she stopped so i bought the JBCO clarifying shampoo. Big mistake. The nape of my neck up to the bottom of my ear started to itch and burn. Ive never had that. A stylist i go to told me it has an allergic reaction to something in that shampoo but i never figured out what. Its a process of elimination.
Was your uncle pouring this wine directly in the tub, the same place where your feet would go, etc? Or was he mixing them in other containers and doing *that* in the tub? I just cant see black people being dirty like that. This is not to insult your family, I am genuinely asking. I think this 'tub' talk is being miscommunicated.
@LisePlansandJournals I see your point. I don't have much memory of the mixing process but I think it was done in a spare bathroom no one used. I remember that the wine was put in a container with a nozzle to steep later that I was told not to touch. I think it similar to the ppl that make there own moonshine back in the day. Maybe it was a Kentucky thing. Im sure I'm not explaining it right since I was told this after he passed.
I remember when Rich & Nyema used to sell the Nubian Heritage Black soaps on a table on 125th in the 90's. So i couldn't wait when Shea Moisture came out. It was good for a few years. But when the formulas changed, It was disapointing.

Yes a lot of heavy products like shea moisturize is not going to be good for fine natural hair …light oil for example work better…we talked about fine natural hair on my live yesterday that is timestamped fine natural hair🤎
I did notice the changes in the product. The commercial was a no for me. Shea Moisture is still the go-to product for me. I want to try their low porosity line.
I stopped using them after the controversy. But in their defense we do live in a predominantly not black market so people kind of have to go with the market if they want to make the most money. But it would be nice if they at least kept a line specific for our hair. But we live in a capitalist world so everything sucks.
They had a PLETHORA of lines-more than what I could keep up with wanting to try. I stopped at the Manuka line… but I’ve now gone back to Carols Daughter because it’s always worked.
I did a video about Carols Daughter too but it’s great to hear it’s working for you but as for as Shea Moisture…yes it was WAY too many lines to keep up with 🤎

I’m listening but l think there’s a lot of overreaching. I dont know if the formula changed because l don’t use product. Where l shop there’s more black hair care products stocked than you could imagine!!! 😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing your perspective and I don’t know if the product changed because I don’t have access to the original label. I have used shea moisture many times as stated in the video and for me personally I would have preferred to see kinky coily hair…I wouldn’t have mind the other models as well as long as coily hair was represented as that represents the companies core audience. And I don’t care if white women use black products but I do care of companies are changing formulas without our knowledge to cater to Caucasian hair🤎
I was never impressed with Shea Moisture. Nothing bad just not impressed. The products were thick the shampoo and conditioner. Glad to see a black business doing well and helping our community.
Yes I use to alter my voice to a higher pitch but after some complaints and going live with my real voice I decided to no longer alter my voice going forward 🤎
Not a fan of Shea Moisture, I've tried them all, I went to the Dollar General and I love Bella Curls leave in conditioner, MS Jessica pillow soft curls and Jelly soft curls I buy those online or Target.
I would feel much better with this company was still black-own. I wish these owners would realize that more money dies not man happiness. Shea moisture was going fine the way it was before selling.
As are every group of women. Dont tell black women what to be obsessed with, esprcially when our hair as it naturally grows out of our head, is often politicized and hated, for generations. Women will always care about their hair because hair is tied to beauty and every woman wants to feel beautiful. If thats not you, good for you. Just dont tell other women what to do. The white female consumer market has the largest aisles in any store so believe it or not they are equally 'obsessed with hair'. I'm sure you wont go to them and tell them theyre too obsessed.
Agreed. I love some shea moisture products and I didn’t even know who owned it. I don’t really care either honestly. All that matters to me is, the products work well for my hair and they do not have dangerous chemicals in them. That’s all.

I remember those days…they really dropped the ball with that commercial 🤎
It looks like they make their products for Dollar Tree now because now the store brand natural hair products look EXACTLY like the original Shea Moisture products. Lol
Wow 😮 I gotta pay attention next time I go🤎
I’m in Harlem and I’ve been natural since 03.
Thanks for sharing….what products do you use now?
@@CoffeeCuties777 I use Camille Rose Naturals, Qhemet Biologics & Curls.
@@CoffeeCuties777 I just Camille Rose Naturals, Qhemet Biologics and Curls.
Hey 👋🏾 thanks for watching 🤎
Everyone should figure out what product(s) that work for them individually. In the 1970's when there were fewer Black hair products , everyone had hair without scalp issues.😊
I agree🤎🤎🤎
I’m glad to hear the products are still working for you🤎
Shea Moisture was too expensive for me to even try.
What do you use instead?
I'm pretty sure I'm severely allergic to shea butter. I started struggling with a rash on my hands and arms during college, and coincidentally that's when I went natural, and I used only shea moisture products for a LONG time because of how cheap they were. (And I LOVED the coconut smell). I stopped during the pandemic due to multiple factors, and coincidentally , the rash drastically subsided.
Oh wow sorry to hear that…what are you using now?
@@CoffeeCuties777 Mostly Design Essentials and silk elements. I don't seem to be having any issues with those.
i remember my late uncle would make Pineapple wine in the tube back in the day.
Did they stop making new releases of shea moisture products?
I don’t think so because the rerelease of the porosity lines are fairly new 🤎
I remember when Rich & Nyema used to sell the Nubian Heritage Black soaps on a table on 125th in the 90's. So i couldn't wait when Shea Moisture came out. It was good for a few years. But when the formulas changed, It was disapointing.
Oh wow that’s cool that you saw them from the beginning…but yes it’s unfortunate that the formula changed🤎
I still use a few of Shea Moisture products. A brand that doesn’t get much attention is Curl Junkie. Their products are still great.
I have to look into them🤎
Their products formula did change i stopped using
What do you use now?
@CoffeeCuties777 I use miche, camille rose and goddess curls by another youtuber hazel goddess and I use a few items from pattern and design essentials to switch it up
I hope Pattern Beauty remains true
Same here🤎
I enjoyed their products until they sold it
Same
In the beginning, SM products had expiration dates. Them suddenly those dates disappeared and we have what we have today.
Oh wow I didn’t know that🤎
I couldn't even be mad when it happened. My fine hair has never taken a liking to their products. Nothing ive tried over the years has become a must purchase 🤷🏾♀️.
Yes a lot of heavy products like shea moisturize is not going to be good for fine natural hair …light oil for example work better…we talked about fine natural hair on my live yesterday that is timestamped fine natural hair🤎
Yes. The commercial was EXTREMELY offensive & I stopped supporting them then. 🙅🏾♀️🙅🏾♀️🙅🏾♀️
What do you use now?
I won't be getting this brand again
What do you use instead?
I did notice the changes in the product. The commercial was a no for me. Shea Moisture is still the go-to product for me. I want to try their low porosity line.
I’m happy to hear the product is still working for you 🤎
Never used it
What do you use instead?
I stopped using them after the controversy. But in their defense we do live in a predominantly not black market so people kind of have to go with the market if they want to make the most money. But it would be nice if they at least kept a line specific for our hair. But we live in a capitalist world so everything sucks.
They had a PLETHORA of lines-more than what I could keep up with wanting to try. I stopped at the Manuka line… but I’ve now gone back to Carols Daughter because it’s always worked.
I did a video about Carols Daughter too but it’s great to hear it’s working for you but as for as Shea Moisture…yes it was WAY too many lines to keep up with 🤎
Omg i do remember that ad
What were your thoughts ?
@CoffeeCuties777 I never use them so I never cared.
Since 1912 and no complaints. I would try it. Black folks are generally clean.
Great point🤎
I found & bought an curl enhancing smoothie at Burlingtons many years ago, after they changed the formula. The changed ingredients dries my hair... so I've been holding on to this one because its the last batch of the old ingredients 😩
It literally works well
Don’t have any other brands you’re interested in once that one is used up?
@@CoffeeCuties777 on yea I use other brands now. But I just been holding on to this old curl enhancing smoothie for nostalgic reasons lol
I’m listening but l think there’s a lot of overreaching. I dont know if the formula changed because l don’t use product. I will say the ad was wrong not to show someone like Lupita or Viola using the product on their semi bald, kinky heads 😊 but do y’all seriously think it would’ve appealed to you? The majority of BW are still obsessed and attached to wigs and weaves. The light skin sister with the curly hair appealed to many women of color across the board and across cultures. I know she did with me. I’m a user of the SM deep conditioner to this day. WW of all backgrounds use “black” hair care products and always have.
Semi bald kinky heads???? You mean to be insulting or funny?
I was never impressed with Shea Moisture. Nothing bad just not impressed. The products were thick the shampoo and conditioner. Glad to see a black business doing well and helping our community.
Same for me🤎
But they still got rid of my favorite line which was that red label line that have palm oil in it
I never got to try that line…what are you using now?
It wasn’t “people making fun of her hair” it was WYT PEOPLE they are the only ones who do this to blqs.
And by Wyt I mean anyone from Europe or Arabia and even Asians - they are the ones who despise 3c and 4c hair and make and issue of it.
I agree🤎
Not a problem with them mixing stuff in a bathtub. Rather that than beauty products filled with lmnop lists of toxic chemicals.
Thats true 🤎
I still use the coconut hibiscus smoothie and one of their leave ins with the brown label
Why did you stop using it?
I still use their castor oil line
How long have you been using it?
This is off topic...but did your voice change a bit? I could've sworn your voice was a little higher before...am I tripping yall?🤔
Yes I use to alter my voice to a higher pitch but after some complaints and going live with my real voice I decided to no longer alter my voice going forward 🤎
@@CoffeeCuties777 Ok, because I was like, "now, 🤔 wayment" 😂

@@bre9328 Lol 😂
Not a fan of Shea Moisture, I've tried them all, I went to the Dollar General and I love Bella Curls leave in conditioner, MS Jessica pillow soft curls and Jelly soft curls I buy those online or Target.
I’ve never heard of Bella Curls…I gotta look into it🤎
Shea butter mixed up in the bath tub?!?!?? Staaaaahp! 😫
lol 😂 right!
In the bathtub is crazy, he should’ve kept that part out because it’s no way the tub was clean enough to be doing that lol
Right lol 😂
I would feel much better with this company was still black-own. I wish these owners would realize that more money dies not man happiness. Shea moisture was going fine the way it was before selling.
I agree🤎
We are too obsessed with hair.
Black lead leads to offensive commercials.

Apology absolutely NOT ACCEPTED!
I'm not racist in JESUS NAME..if its a good hair products that's going to be a blessing to my hair in JESUS NAME..no matter the race,
🤎🤎🤎
Agreed. I love some shea moisture products and I didn’t even know who owned it. I don’t really care either honestly. All that matters to me is, the products work well for my hair and they do not have dangerous chemicals in them. That’s all.
@@adjoayeboah9482 any race can do you down right dirty if They not sold out to JESUS ALONE, people better be COVERED in the Blood of Jesus. The Lord will tell you, and allow you to see for yourself what to use. And what not,
It isn't racist to support black owned businesses. It's only black people saying this ignorant crap!
I think no matter what black people will always have something to complain about. These companies were started with us in mind. Small. Worked hard. Got big. And then they share the wealth through philanthropy. Not everything is a conspiracy. Yet another case of us being hypercritical/vigilant because of fear and trauma and yes jealousy!
way to not see the bigger picture. Good for you.
Shea Moisture is fine but I prefer Nubian Heritage.

Both lines are now owned by unilever. The formulas have changed for both brands, water being the first ingredient rather than shea butter.

I’m actually not sure…I do know it was some not so great allegations with him involving women but not sure the race🤎
I still use the Red Palm Oil and Cocoa Butter line. Its so good.
I’m happy to hear it’s working for you 🤎
Tried it only because it was on offer in Boots UK,that stuff dried out my hair. For context (and I know this is not popular to do) I am way in the type 4 region. I make my own conditioner and, yes it includes fenugreek. The slip, condition and strength if not overused has transformed hair that was in serious need of help (need to add I used to have fibroids, so those who know, KNOW, what that can do to our hair). My hair is healing now, so they can keep their additives, chemicals I cannot pronounce and false promises.
I’m on a journey to make my own products as well because I’m cool on all the additives too…good to hear you’re healing and found something that works for you🤎
The same. Used their deep conditioning. Ruined my hair
