    For me, Final Fantasy III has one of the worst final dungeons EVER. Not being able to get out of the world of darkness after 5 bosses and doing the final boss without a chance to save your game after like 90 minutes of dungeons is just dreadful! Long live save states!

    Remember that part in the original Star Ocean when you see a meteor fall on the other side of the world and you have to walk all the way to another continent just to see a minute long cut scene... and you have to walk back to where you started. Doesn't it suck when you want to go to the next pokemon gym, you got the right pokemon for the job and... you notice your mon's 10 levels lower? Welp screw grinding, it's annoying but needed SPECIALLY in nuzlockes

    I love the FFIII job system, but I'll never understand why they made it so annoying to switch jobs. The whole "adjustment phase" where your characters had reduced stats until you won a few random encounters was completely unnecessary. knowing you would have to do a bunch of random encounters after changing to an all mage party for the mini dungeons, and after changing back, made the dungeons so much more annoying.

    If Genshin Impact was a JRPG it would be on top of my personally most hated segments list because you do interesting stuff then you have to grind your adventure level up a bunch before you can do more of that, and then you gotta grind up that adventure level even more, and back and back again and it's in the way of me ability to get places in it. Despite being so actually genuinely good and full of waifus and husbandos!

    Dorter Trade City, especially on my first playthrough was a huge shock. I didnt think that battle would be a train wreck that early in he game. The grinding you have to do here takes forever. I do appreciate the beatdown they give you here because it sets a tone for the game that tells you "pay attention and BE tactical", not rush through everything.
    Shining Force 2's dark cave I had long forgotten about. This kind of a battle does not work as well for a tactical game as it does for other styles of RPGs, good pick.

    Traveling to the past and the final segments of The 7th Saga comes to mind.

You have to talk to an NPC after getting so many pieces, back track, up smack, turn around, go downtown, and then finally you do it, you get all 7 pieces of Alumina... You're left at first with Karol (who only knows one healing arte) and later Raven (who also only knows one good healing arte) until you regain Estelle. After three dungeons.
    At the very least they give you a punch of healing save points to make up for it.

    I remember those segments in Sailor Moon Another Story. The only way to get through them was to run from every encounter until you found the power up item, usually hidden somewhere, then backtrack to do actual fighting. Though with the power up item, literally impossible encounters suddenly turned into easy mode. There was absolutely no in-between. I remember it was pretty irritating, especially having to do it for everyone.

    Most of the dungeons in Xenosaga: Episode 1, but especially freaking Cathedral Ship.
    They had Yasunori Mitsuda with the freaking London Philharmonic Orchestra, and terribly underutilized him. Most of the dungeons are already boring sprawls, but having ZERO music on top of it is almost insulting. But I digress-
    This dungeon is mostly a monochromatic hell, I can't really make sense of where I'm going until the mall. The previous area with enemies had them somewhere between level 7-9 I believe, and the boss was MANAGEABLE. Here, the enemies are level 15-18, which is already a big difficulty spike. The save point doesn't come up until over an hour into this hell. Ziggy, who you were probably using because he's still pretty powerful at this point in the game, you can't use because most of the enemies absorb his techs. And the boss here is probably the hardest in the game. And did I mention THE MOST POWERFUL CHARACTER IN THE GAME doesn't learn techs with levels, but through stupid ass email attachments, so she can't exactly shine here either.
    The only good thing to come out of this dungeon was finding MOMO's first magical girl tech that allows her to steal from enemies.

  • @raina1848
    @raina1848 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Secret of Mana magic grind is truly mind-numbing. Same with learning magic from espers in Final Fantasy 6. I try to make it more engaging by not doing it all at once and putting on some music in the background, but I still have found my eyes drooping and almost falling asleep in the process.
    OMG, thank you for mentioning Sailor Moon Another Story with the individual senshi parts! That was so hard! And the boss in Mercury was impossible to the point where I had initially thought that that was a fight you were not supposed to win. Also, Prince Demando's dungeon was such a pain with how long it was and that you don't have Sailor Moon with you then.
    For a new video idea, how about most annoying and difficult to remember "windows of opportunity" for getting special items and stuff?

    They definitely improved the gummi ship sections a LOT in Kingdom Hearts 2. They actually feel like rail shooters, are fun to play, and if you don't want to go in too deep with them, you don't have to. :3
    *cringing at some of the examples of Secret of Mana magic grind* Um, a little piece of advice. If you don't cast the spells in a place where your weapons are out, you only get half the grind points. Grinding in inns and houses is a major time waste. :3

    Nice shoutout to The Guardian Legend! That game is amazing! My pick for part four is getting the Eclipse torch in Phantasy Star IV. Losing Raja, going through the Air Castle, and then going through the tower after you get the torch is draining. It's where the dungeons get longer, tougher enemies, and then you have to fight a boss at the end. It's a slough.

    For Sailor Moon you just need to use the right formation and place the unit in the right spot on the formation. Depending on what formation and placement you use will either rise the unit's attack power or defense. I recommend attack since after a level up or two you can wipe out your enemies with one attack very easily.

    I have a few in no particular order:
    - Any dungeon requiring Flash in the early Pokémon games, back when it was an HM. They’re not very long, but if you’re not prepared for it, then you either get stuck with flash on something for a long time, or you have to go find a flash hm slave.
    - chapter 3 in mother 3. It’s such an unbelievably good game, but this chapter kills the pacing for me every time. Yes I feel bad for salsa, but the entire chapter is basically delivery quests one after the other
    - reclaiming the throne of barona in tales of graces. While I love the game to pieces, and I don’t mind this portion plot-wise, you are thrown into some of the worst dungeons in the game in quick succession. Wallbridge ruins has terrible music, is awful to navigate, and feels insanely tedious. Wallbridge itself isn’t much better, as every place looks the same, making it difficult to tell where you’ve already been. Not to mention the ridiculous difficulty spike in normal encounters. Topped off by barona castle, another dungeon where everything looks the same and terrifying normal encounters lurk around every corner, I dread this sequence every time I play tales of graces
    There are definitely more but these are the ones I can think of for now

  • @Dhalin
    @Dhalin ปีที่แล้ว

    There are ways to mitigate the Secret of Mana grind...
    1). Use the Wind Temple as your grind spot once you get there (and before you get there, there's not much grind to do). Free refill, without the sleeping animation, plus plenty of closeby enemies who, later in the game, can't hurt you whatsoever. Magic XP does not care about strength of enemies (just like weapon xp).
    2). When leveling with the girl, if you are less than Lv5, make sure you cast her spells somewhere your weapons are drawn. Otherwise, you get less XP per cast.
    3). Obviously, use the spell that costs the least MP to cast. Lumina and Dryad are terrible because their spells are so expensive, but most other elementals have 1 or 2 MP casts.
    4). When using Saber spells, position your characters in a line so that whoever you're not controlling is standing immediately in front of the girl. This shaves a second to a second and a half off of each cast, as the little orbs that fly around to the recipient spawn ontop of the recpient.
    5). Some spells such as Freeze can be chain-casted, which shaves a lot of time off and lets you cast all 49 of them on one enemy before the damage registers. Other spells such as Fireball cannot be chain-casted.

    As much as I love the PMD games some sections are just tedious as heck however the Mankey storyline is the PMD DX is one of the most annoying imo:
    *The enemies in the Uproar Forest dungeon can be pretty tough for that point in the game.
    *The Mankey boss-fight at the end can be pretty difficult.
    *You need to repeat the dungeon in order to get the chestnut (which is a missable item) in order to progress the game.
    And after all that "uproar" your base becomes personalized. That's nice and all but how does this relate to your character being turned into a Pokémon or the natural disasters that caused Groudon to awaken? absolutely nothing that's what (it legitimately feels like a filler Pokémon episode from the anime).

    I vehemently disagree with your assertions about Wild ARMs 3! Boring, you say? It's likely my favorite PS2 game! The four intro segments and the Guardian Shrine really should only take about 2 hours. That said, if it's not your thing, that 2 hours is gonna be a slog. Personally, I would put the hunt for the four Guardian Figurines near the end of the game as my "that part" of the game. There were several instances where the game gave you a conundrum to deal with and expected you to backtrack to all sorts of places you have no indication you should go and piece together clues that will maybe, sorta, kinda get you close to one of the things you need to actually find the main thing you're trying to find.
    The Guardian Figurines were the worst of example of it, especially the Lion Statue. You had to go to some town, ask around for a clue to allow you to activate the dungeon on the world map (it uses that same bullshit radar system introduced in WA2 where locations don't appear until you have the right clue and you scan the right area). Go through the dungeon to be placed back on the world map on a cliffside that your airship could not land. Scan that area to make a signpost appear. The signpost gives a vague clue about needing a better way to search for items. Then, you have to go to another town, get the clues that direct you to a colosseum town. Enter the little fighting pit event, and complete it (you are limited in the number of turns you may take to actually win and it can be a challenge if you aren't prepared). Your prize is an item that shows a mini radar on the world map which displays the items and other things to find with the scan feature. You take that thing, and go BACK through that dungeon to the land your airship can't land, and only THEN will the Lion Statue actually appear when you scan. And that's just one of the four you need.
    I still love the game, but I won't ever claim it's perfect.

  • @letterm6656
    @letterm6656 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For me, it's definitely the entire Trails franchise. Who would've thought that I have to look back to catch Fie tailing me or that I have to run from coast to coast to maximize a sneakers' worth..
    The worst are in Trails in the sky fc and Cold steel 3. In TitS(lol) most of the game, you play as Joshua and Estelle, while other members come and go as the story process. Than 3/4 of the game, your party split into 2 groups. Joshua took charge of one team, while Estelle lead the main team. Than falcom made you to fight Loewe the Blade fucken Lord with team Estelle. Up to this point, the main duo covers each other short coming. In this boss fight, you're forced to use Estelle and 2 throw away characters. If you want to maximize your reward, you have to come out on top of what arguably the hardest boss fight in the entire franchise.
    In CS3, they introduce a new card mini game. At some point, you have to beat a certain spoiler bad guy in the game of card. Problem is if you haven't been invested in these card game, you gonna have to play with your shitty hand. You can choose a preset deck, but it will penalized your AP gain. A new mini game over the previous is nice, but being forced to play is kinda low...

Example, if you're broke in the Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask, a game with a bank that if you deposit money anytime before the 3rd and final day and reset time + your current ammo going back to the 1st day. Whatever you deposited into the bank will still be there ready to be used (which will frequently happen) or keep depositing money and reset time to continue becoming richer. If your not doing this in that game and struggle for money then your doing something wrong in the game. I think it's a unique idea that might have its own top 5.

    Thank you for your videos as always! Our taste in games usually aligns, almost to a scary degree, but I absolutely LOVE Wild ARMs 3. Granted, I did not play 1 or 2 (well tried 1 much later but it's pretty dated) so lots of what made it unique to me would not be the same to series veterans. I did however most dislike the part when the main girl get afflicted by an uncurable curse where she can't be healed by stamina until you get it removed in the story.

    These days the grind around Mandalia Plains in FFT can actually be considerably shorter thanks to mods. FFT WOTL Tweak actually makes all your characters have inherent JP Up. You then can put that time into actually playing the game and maybe grinding a bit for the Dark Knight if you want, which needs just Black Mage level 5 and Knight Level 5. I personally prefer to plan for a longtime goal and grind for a Dual Wield Monk with Shirahadori (Especially for those crazy Chapter 3 fights), but for those who want to test everything from the get go it's a very welcome addition. Wonderful mod, really.
    Anyway, keep up the great work, David.

    This might be an obscure pick, but the last dungeon in Arc The Lad: Twilight Of The Spirits. 10x longer than any other dungeon in the game and full of elevators and warp pads, it completely stops the game dead in its tracks, and right before the end too.

    The worst section in my favorite JRPG (FF7) is the first visit to the northern continent. The moment after Aerith dies, the game drops in quality for about 1-2 hours and becomes super boring. The only good parts of this section are the cabin in the middle of nowhere, being a nice checkpoint-resting area, and the fights against the giant icicles and two headed dragon are pretty cool. Another section would be the huge materia missions, with the worst one being Fort Condor, which is by far, the worst minigame in all of FF7, I usually just set the speed to X3 on the remasters, wait 10 minutes, lose, and then fight the boss (which is piss easy btw), and there, about 5 minutes of my time wasted, and what’s worse is that in the original, it could take FOREVER since there’s no speed up (and I hope your disc isn’t scratched and you have a good working PS1/PS2 cause if you don’t, your in for a bad time. I know I’m over-exaggerating at this point but I hope that Intergrade fixed the mini game.

    Final Fantasy IV, the trap doors in the Sealed Gate. Even in the easy North American (I was a kid at the time) version I almost always had to revive whoever was targeted, and screw getting 90% of the treasures without fighting them. It's the reason I took advantage of the Rydia warp glitch/exploit in the Dwarven castle after she rejoins the party.

    OH GOD! The Sailor Moon RPG is a SLLLLLLLLLOG! I had to do so much grinding in that game.
    By the way, Sailor Moon RPG's mechanics are totally abusable. I don't remember exactly how it went, but I beat the end boss without her ever attacking me. I think one of the girls has a spell that is the equivalent of STOP from Final Fantasy, which works in the final battle. Then there's an item that instantly restores *all* MP, so I just kept feeding my freeze spell caster MP restoration with one of the other girls. And then the other three just attacked non-stop. It was the most ridiculous end boss I've ever experienced.
    I mean, I'm glad I beat it. It was the first fan-translated RPG I ever completed, and I did it on my Gamecube SD Launcher, which was an amazing peripheral for its time. But jeez, that game.

    I'm gonna tell you my hated sequence: Level Grinding in Kouryuu Densetsu Villgust (SFC/SNES)
    Villgust have an unconventional way of level grinding. Let's just say that things are not the same when you level up too much in one area. It still makes you avoid random battles in the dungeon of said area, but still...

    The only shining grace in that Shining Force 2 cave (see what I did there 😉) is when you go into battles that cave backwards is awesome. But everything else, no thank you!
    Having to level up the girl at the end of Secret of Mana drove me insane. I powered through but man I did not care for that.
    I literally was about to play Final Fantasy Tactics for the very first time but got something to eat and watched this first and now I'm having second thoughts. I'll play it but at the moment I'm in no mood for anything aggravating like that. The irony though is I thought about playing Star Ocean 2nd story as I started it but stopped just before the air ship and thought I'll go back to that. Then saw it come up and I cursed under my breath.
    The reason why I'm not in the mood for such shenanigans is I was playing Arc The Lad Collection on PS1. I figured it's Working Designs so I'll enjoy it. After 70 hours it broke me and made me quit like you did Sailor Moon. The pacing is glacially slow. Battles take forever. No matter how much you level up (I got pissed and just grinded for like 10 hours so I could just one shot everything) the enemies seem to scale up with you so the battles just get harder and harder until they're one shotting you, which just drags everything out even more. Then the game throws random bullshit at you that makes no sense just for padding in an already way too long game. One part that infuriated me in this way was the main villain brings back to life someone who died and didn't fulfill their hearts desire. So you assume bad guy. Nope! It's the father of one of the characters who trained him to be an honorable man and skilled fighter who was the town's protector. His unfulfilled dream was to murder everyone in town and kill his son. That's like bringing Dumbledore back to life, fully in control of his mind and actions, but sides with Voldemort because he wanted to kill Harry Potter. It makes no sense and is a colossal waste of time.
    But that's not the worst part! There's a dungeon called the forbidden cave. Nothing says it's optional so I assumed it needs to be completed. It takes FOUR HOURS! NO SAVE POINT! All you get for it is a new character that you can only use in like 3 areas in the whole game where the enemies are weak at kittens to begin with. It should have been removed entirely from the game. It's THE worst rpg I've ever played. Story and world isn't half bad but the game play and pacing is cruel and unusual punishment.

You have to level, you have to learn skills, and you have to set up a multiple class party - just like the enemies you will face. Dorter is only a difficulty spike if you're choosing to ignore the game mechanics and trying to go from battle to battle with the same party of squires you started out with

    Golden Sun Dark Dawn has a annoying sequence where Sevta the Lycanthrope Jupiter Adept of the party leaves the party for a while in order to learn how to control her beast form, and it's a annoying sequence mostly due to the massive unfair difficulty spike caused by the fact Sevta besides being a tank for the party was also the party's primary healer which means you no longer have access to multi-party healing, and reviving spells which means you're literally forced to rely on recovery, and revival items just to survive and to add more annoyance you're now dealing with a increased random encounter rate with enemies that can deal massive damage, or straight up one-shot you if they land a critical. Let's just say I was grateful for the next sequence which starts Sevta returning to the party besides having a new useful ability in her transformation ability which boosts all of her stats while it's active but you now regain access to the multi-healing, and reviving spells due to Sevta also being the party's primary healer.

    One part that I hate is in Dynasty Warriors Gundam where you are FORCED to use shitty Units, even if they're Gundams! Not all Gundams are amazing, unstoppable beasts! I struggled a tad with the GP01fb as it has weird moves; the V2 is woefully underwhelming; and Heavyarms Kai? That... THING... is a Gundam in name only, focussing entirely on missile and bullet barrages with NO melée capabilities... in a game centred on hacking and slashing, made fun by a little weapon that is standard issue on even Grunt Units, the Beam Sabre! Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot; the Heavyarms has a tiny, as good as insignificant, barely noticeable bayonet on its forearm! Zakus have axes! They're the oldesr Mobile Suits around and they have more practicality... than a GUNDAM!! Jus digest that little tidbit for a minute! And jus so you know, I had, what I would call, a pretty good set of Plans on Reborn (Rank A, good stats, Stage 2 reinforcements for armaments)... and nearly failed a mission I had to use Heavyarms in multiple times! Had I been using, say, the Mk. II, even the TITANS one, it would have been a breeze! And, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Heavyarms supposed to be... better!? Different Timelines aside!

    Here are my top five parts in JRPGs that I couldn't stand. In no particular order.
    5. The introductory sequence of Kingdom Hearts 2 with Roxas - Remember those long-ass intro sequences in Suikoden V and Dragon Quest VII? Much the same, here.
    4. A tie between Legend of Legaia Rogue's Tower and Noaru Valley, both Point of No Return dungeons until you complete them. One's a teleport maze that'll take you a while; thankfully, Rouge's pattern is simple. Noaru Valley just has the third and final battle with Songi at the end, who will bring the pain. Legend of Legaia's...*not* an easy game.
    3. Kingdom Hearts I's Hollow Bastion - Mostly the unskippable cutscene crap, which I have no patience for nowadays, but Dragon Maleficent and Ansem-Riku were nothing to sneeze at. I got the original PS2 version, by the way.
    2. Final Fantasy VII Great Glacier - I might not agree with you on Midgar, but the navigating part of the Great Glacier was a real pain, to say the least.
    1. Final Fantasy XV, Zegnatus Keep... I got the original version of the game, so let's just say I experienced all the tedium for myself in this penultimate dungeon.

    Ah yes, the good times that is leveling your Magic in Secret of Mana. To be fair, weapon leveling is also annoying, but at least you don't need MP for it and the others share exp (even if it's little). I can count the amount of times I thought I was being smart by leveling the girl in the inn for quick recovery... If only I had known at that time that she receives double exp on a battle map. Oh well, 8.99 magic animation da bomb. Plus, you gotta go through the final dungeon countless times anyway for all of the orbs. If you're into that.

  • @tommyhatcher3399
    @tommyhatcher3399 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    RPGs don't have that problem. They were made in the 80's and you play as a black slate. They're basically horror movies. Your role is just a barbarian, in a dungeon, killing nasty monsters and rats and bugs. Since the game leaves so much to your imagination you can be realistic, meaning the barbarian is depressed and angry and traumatized and the place he's in with all the magic and monsters around him is straight out of a Freddy Kruger dream sequence. Absolute hell. Annoying parts in games adds to that realism. Dragon Quest 1 was the only true Japanese RPG. If you knew a magic-user and you're a fighting-man and you're both on your way to slay a dragon and dark wizard, it would not be a cute journey. It would be a horror movie, or a war movie with dark fantasy and war movies are horrific enough as they are. It's not about making a depressing game, it's about making a game that suggests the world your heroes in isn't depressing. Black slate heroes are far better than happy or sad heroes. Of course they're generic. If you went to war right now for real you would be disposable. Not "The One," but just another generic solider who is scared to death. For the most part, JRPGs aren't role playing games, they're character playing games. Western RPGs only deserve the RPG title, as well as DQ1, and maybe the most brutal JRPGs that give the characters you play as a desperate quality.
