A wise man who meditates all day In the mountains while training his sword to flow like water. He has no desires to live for the next day. He lives for the present and protects his family with peace in his heart and mind. He is a samurai one that has accepted death and embraced it. His mind has learnt to flow like water and enter the state of flow. The wise samurai would strike his sword with the flow of life guiding his palm and strike. He knows his time is not infinite but has hopes and a big heart to master the art of flow to pass it on to his descendants long in the future. His heart Is filled with nothing but happiness and joy over the people who has come to learn from his life experiences. They call him... "The master of flowing water"... What is water to the air and thus, the wind? Water is a slave to the form of its molecular structure and to the form/structure of its "container". Water can only flow where it is directed. Air and Wind can take any and all forms in all directions simultaneously. Water is a slave waiting for us to drink it. The Air and the Wind are the sharpest, tghe most durable and the most flexible all at the same time, while also being able to transform instantly to being blunt or soft, allowing for friend to pass through and enemies to succumb to its will. The Air and Wind can cut through or batter down all of the other elements, even when the other elements become tgoo erratic for their master's to control. The wind can even turn each element against itself, while also being able to pass through itself should it be used against itself.

In the shadow of the ancient mountains, a lone samurai named Kiyoshi followed the teachings of the legendary swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. He studied diligently, immersing himself in the wisdom contained within the pages of the "Book of Five Rings." Kiyoshi sought to become one with the natural world, as Musashi had done before him.
Each day, Kiyoshi trained tirelessly, perfecting his swordsmanship and practicing the principles Musashi preached. He learned to harmonize his mind, body, and spirit to achieve the ultimate state of being - the flow state.
One fateful day, a wandering ronin challenged Kiyoshi to a duel, seeking to test the young samurai's skills. Kiyoshi accepted the challenge, knowing it would be an opportunity to apply Musashi's teachings in the heat of battle.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow upon the battlefield, Kiyoshi's senses sharpened. He focused on the ronin's movements, every breath, every twitch of a muscle. Kiyoshi's mind, body, and spirit coalesced, allowing him to achieve the coveted flow state. In an instant, he saw the opening he needed and struck with the precision of a master.
With a single, fluid motion, Kiyoshi disarmed his opponent, leaving the ronin humbled and awestruck. The defeated warrior bowed in reverence, recognizing the power of the teachings Kiyoshi had embraced. The young samurai offered his hand to the ronin, inviting him to join his journey of enlightenment and mastery.
Together, they ventured deeper into the mountains, continuing their quest to embody the wisdom of Miyamoto Musashi. Each day, they trained and meditated, honing their skills, refining their minds, and embracing the ever-elusive flow state. Through their dedication and unwavering focus, the legacy of Musashi lived on, forever inspiring those who walked the path of the warrior.

Long ago in the Edo period, a clan had been formed to unite two clashing villages, which would be known as the Tomanji Clan. The man who had formed the clan was an old samurai, who had fought in the many wars in Japan, but had come to retire.
He had a special technique, which he called "the flow state". He said that for one to enter this state, they had to become one with their sword and body - uniting them. When you entered this state, it's as if you can see everything, and time seems to slow. Your eyes see only black and white, and every part of your body except your limbs felt weak. But, your strike would be swift, agile and deadly.
This technique would die with him, as he could not finish teaching it before he passed away. But today, some say that a swordsman exists that is able to enter the flow state.

Socrates and Miyamoto Musashi continued their dialogue under the vast expanse of the Japanese night sky. The villagers, still captivated by the extraordinary encounter, lingered in the shadows, eavesdropping on the conversation that unfolded between these two intellectual giants.
Socrates: Miyamoto Musashi, your commitment to the Way of the Sword is evident. In my own teachings, I often speak of the importance of questioning and the pursuit of knowledge. How do you reconcile the disciplined practice of the sword with the inquisitive nature of the mind?
Musashi: Socrates, the mind and the sword are not separate entities but intertwined aspects of our being. The disciplined practice of the sword is a means to sharpen both the body and the mind. By facing challenges and adapting to the ebb and flow of battle, one hones not only physical skill but also mental acuity.
Socrates: Fascinating! It seems we both appreciate the idea that true wisdom lies not only in the acquisition of knowledge but in the application of that knowledge to our daily lives. The pursuit of virtue, it appears, is a multifaceted journey.
Musashi: Indeed, Socrates. The Way is not a destination but a continuous path of self-discovery and improvement. To excel in the martial arts or in life, one must embrace change and cultivate a resilient spirit.
Socrates: You speak of resilience, a quality I often associate with the ability to endure hardship and maintain one's integrity. Do you believe there are universal principles that guide us in the pursuit of virtue, or are they shaped by the cultural context in which we find ourselves?
Musashi: The principles may be expressed in different forms, but the essence remains the same. Whether in the philosophy of ancient Greece or the teachings of Eastern martial traditions, there is a common thread-the pursuit of excellence, the understanding of oneself, and the harmonious integration with the world.
Socrates: Harmony, an eloquent concept. It reminds me of the importance of balance in all things. In our pursuit of virtue, we must navigate the extremes and find the middle ground. How does the concept of balance manifest in your martial philosophy?
Musashi: Balance is at the core of the Way. In battle, one must be neither too aggressive nor too passive, neither too tense nor too relaxed. It is the delicate dance between opposing forces that allows for effective action. This balance extends beyond the battlefield to the intricacies of daily life.
As their conversation deepened, Socrates and Musashi explored topics ranging from the nature of courage to the role of compassion in the pursuit of virtue. The villagers, now enthralled by the philosophical exchange, gained insights that transcended cultural boundaries. The meeting of these two great minds became a bridge between ancient Greece and feudal Japan, uniting them in a shared pursuit of wisdom and excellence. The night unfolded with the exchange of ideas, leaving an indelible mark on the village and its inhabitants.

The adventures of the mind and spiritual realms are what interest me the most. As Miyamoto Musashi said, seek nothing outside of yourself and (I don't remember if it was him or someone else who said) Wherever you go, there you are.

    • @FFXI_Addict

Are you actually STARTING with a katana? As in, a metal sword? You can do that, but as somebody who did that myself, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really dead set on going down that path in that way. It's not that it's wrong... it's just bloody and painful.
I began four and a half years ago, using metal katana only. I've broken bones, slashed my fingers, ground down the flesh of my knuckles on the guard by gripping it like a baseball bat. I learn from pain, so I was fine with it. But you have to be sure to CARE FOR YOUR HANDS. Clean and disinfect even the smallest of scrapes or wounds. That sword may be your soul, but if you can't grip it well, then you will become soulless. Care for your hands with extreme diligence.
Personally I recommend new practitioners get a red oak bokken. Red oak is a hefty, meaty wood with some weight to it and it will emulate the feel of a metal katana immaculately. For training muscle memory and improving your grip timing, red oak bokkens are where it's at. You may want a lighter one made of ash wood also, for breathing practice and generally just focusing on form.

    Dear Sensei,
It's been three seasons since our paths first crossed. I was locked in the bitter gall of revenge, hatred, and malice. I guess that's normal when someone attacks your wife, but it wouldn't leave me; those overwhelming feelings of despair and betrayal-all the black anger and crimson malice that sprouted within my heart and soul.
There's still some dark spots of residue that I still need to grind down, until I'm completely free of those past blemishes upon my spirit. Once or twice a month, I sit in a tent and listen to this a few times in a row. It's the only thing that has allowed me to *stop thinking* so much, and embrace that which simply is, for what it is.
This mindset has bled over into every aspect of my life. I ponder over what you've brought to the fore equally, as I do with Biblical sages and the wisdom found in Ecclesiastes and Proverbs. I've meditated on all these precepts for nearly a year straight now, and my life has found increased peace.
I don't argue as much as I used to. I keep a level head more often. I've found myself being more considerate of those around me, as I used to be very selfish.
I have less problems now, and as a result I've found time to appreciate life's blessings and beauty all the more, multiplying my peace even further.
Thank you for what you do, and what you have already done. It has improved the quality of my life.
