She now opens the door for so many contemporary singers, and they owe her a hell of a debt. I grew up listening to Pat Benatar and many others of her generation back then. I was a teenager during the 80s, so I'm thankful I could experience all of this growing up. I'm so glad you are discovering what actual singing is and what true rock and roll is keep it up. Promises in the dark is another one of my all-time favorites of hers. I think it shows her vocal range probably the best.
I just saw her in Atlantic City July 2, and she sang this song. At 69 years old she hit every note, and sounded like she did 30 years ago. Amazing concert.

The initial guitar riff was made up on the spot by Neil Giraldo after almost coming to blows with the drummer in the studio (recorded with full band like live) because they couldn't agree on how to start it. Ended up being this angry intro. It also has a mistake in the second verse when Neil plays the wrong chord. They decided to keep it in as it made sense with the lyrics. Or maybe because no-one wanted to do another take that day? lol. Might be worth noting that Neil and Myron are best friends and Myron is Godfather to Neil's daughter, so all is well after that day. Pat and Neil's sound progressed to much rockier as they went along. The 90s stuff is hard rock. Really good too.
Is Pat Benatar Rock or Pop? Well.....she's actually opera trained and went to rock because it was something she enjoyed then the record company had her do some pop for the money. She and her husband (the guitar player in this vid) also did an album of nothing but jazz work as well. And its funny you mentioned Lizzy Hale and Halestorm.
