Reading about this nurse's case and the other nurse who was shot and killed by a patient's grandson is so heartbreaking. I worked home health many years ago as a cna and I didn't give it a second thought that something could happen. As a nurse working for a large hh company about 6 yrs ago is when I left the field altogether. Our safety was not their priority. I complaind about a patient who would make sexual comments to me who was schizophrenic. He really scared the crap out of me but they kept sending nurses there. My final hh case there was a shoot out that just happened prior to my arrival. Couldn't go and see my pt due to the police blocking the street off. I quit the following day. I just got tired of going into these bad neighborhoods. I also got tired of going into people's houses dealing with crazy ass family members. Home health isn't what it use to be it's just too dangerous now. I pray for the safety of nurses who are still doing it. Just know these greedy hh companies don't give a damn about your safety all they are looking for is the next payment they go get. Not worth it!
I am definitely the Queen of “Get Somebody Else To Do It” I am a Home Health Hospice & Palliative Care LPN and my boundaries are always intact and I stay strapped with protection. Thank you for this video.
Does anyone else’s home health agency expect them to go out in the middle of the night for PRN/on call visits? My agency has the expectation that whoever is “on call” for the night will go out at night if someone calls like for a clogged foley or something and I am just not comfortable going out at 2am to somewhere and someone I don’t know. We are told that it is our “job” to take care of the patients but I’m just not comfortable putting myself at risk like that. EMS gets sent out with at least two people but we have nobody? Doesn’t seem smart to me.
@@AccordingToTawanda yep this is my first time doing home health and I absolutely love it but the on call expectations just stress me out. I’ve spent most of my time as a nurse working in the hospital setting. We also have to take “start of care” call shifts after 5pm. Which has really turned into doing a start of care in addition to your 6-8 revisits on the day of your SOC call shift in order to keep them in compliance with doing the start within 48 hours of the day of referral.
@@maryrudisill2541 Mary, I’m happy to hear that you love home health. It’s one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. I’ve never worked for a HH company with the expectations you’re describing. I’m not sure if this is specific to your company or state. I’d definitely inquire about job descriptions and expectations with other companies before I invest more time with this one. Seems unreasonable for HH. Hospice companies do more after hours work than HH. However, the structure of Hospice is different. Definitely shop around. Keep me updated, and thanks for watching 😊

I’m just glad to know this is not the normal because I feel like these hospital systems gaslight us into thinking we aren’t “productive” enough or that we have poor time management skills. Yes I've heard these stories with home health my friend had some scary stories back when we were in our 20s new nurse's young women were volunerable to attacks as women you're going into unknown area's people's homes you don't know who's living with people and the patients be telling people my nurse is coming today people messed up on drugs and various substances today and nurse's are a target for money they think we carry drugs on us with home care and you don't so sad

"Get somebody else to do it" can so easily be misconstrued as us passing off work. But if you are the nurse that gets a patient reassigned, we need to be strong and tell them NO, you are not passing the buck on me and putting me in a bad situation, admin. Most care centers understand and want everyone to stay safe. If it's a problem at admission, chances are it will be an ongoing problem throughout the episode of care and the office does not want the headache - MOST TIMES. But still important to communicate and reinforce those boundaries.
would you go to an assignment of someone that had just recently been released from prison, or request agency provide a chaperone or another nurse to go with you or even someone else in training to accompany you? or refuse the assignment and ask for a switch? I know someone in this scenario and doesn't want to go ... you're going into someone's home and have no idea . Thank you
Hi Tawanda! I’m in Chicago too, working in the south suburbs like Dolton, Calumet city. I work PRN for a large based hospital HH agency and we get very High acuity pts! I love the Ortho admits when I get them, looking for a change in agency
Hi Tamika! Ortho admissions is like being on vacation, lbvs 😂It’s about 95% of the admissions I do. Most days I only admit Ortho patients. I miss and appreciate high acuity medical patients when I have them. Thanks for watching 😊
I did home health in 2009 and had a client with a very creepy son. He stared a lot and would just give me the creeps. Never thought to let them know that other disciplines would be visiting following me. Good idea
