    Fascinating stuff. Gives a little background on one of the key figures in "Reilly: Ace of Spies".

    BBC Reilly Ace of Spies, excellent series.
    When Sydney Rosenblum was asked who starts wars, that quite simply answered Bankers. Zarharoff was a Lord of war. Rothschild, Maxim, Basilous Zarapoulous all shared a common ancestry.

    Probably the best documentary I have seen. Thoughtful, balanced, and the "blame" ? Well, it lies with all of us, in our stars, perhaps

    People oftentimes think a war economy is good when in fact the war economy benefits the munitions makers to the cost of countless (millions) dead. While it is true that the war economy of the 2nd World War ended the Great Depression, it did so at cost to 60 millions dead in Europe and Russia. Contrast the post World War II peace economy and the consistent growth since that time, that has continued well into the modern era. War, and war economy, simply disrupts and disturbs economic growth.

    • @StevenTorrey
      @StevenTorrey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The other side I hear is that somehow, munition makers encourage or cause war is another outrageous fallacy. They feed on the war hysteria to supply a need for armaments; they are NOT the cause of the war.

    • @StevenTorrey
      @StevenTorrey 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The notion that the populace wants these wars is equally ludicrous. Oftentimes it devolves alone to the megalomania of a Napoleon, a Kaiser Wilhelm, or an Adolf Hitler. And we see this unfolding in modern time with the lunacy of a Kim Jong Un where the stakes are now even higher for total annihilation. How do other states respond when a Megalomaniac rules the day?

    Fantastic upload, thanks. I don't agree with the conclusions though. Sir Basil facilitated the conflicts through his deals. He has a lot to answer for.

    Zaharoff sure don't sound like a Greek surname, maybe Greek in the sense sabattai zevi is Greek (cousin of "ataturk")

    Bismarck also said " The whole of the Balkans is not worth the bones of a single Pomeranian Grenadier " he had little interest in war in the Balkans but rather in benefiting from Austria's position there....

    Peter Martland's glib comments and summary - that ZZ was an ordinary capitalist - seem incredible in context with the cascade of outrage screaming about ZZ throughout the documentary. Why on earth was Martland allowed to sanitize the reputation of ZZ?

    :o up until the end I thought Zaharoff was made up and the whole thing is a mockumentary about war mongering in general (consider my self a history buff but I never had heard of Zaharof up until now :/ ) excellent work by Angelos Abazoglou check out his recent donumentary on the post ww2 Marshal plan Welcome to Greece Mr. Marsall (2007)

      ...no? Basil Zaharoff was Greek, he just happened to be born in the Ottoman Empire. There was a large Greek minority in Turkey(and a Turkish minority in Greece) until the 1923 Population Exchange agreement.

    • @thesoundinyourhead1782
      @thesoundinyourhead1782 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RaptorJesus there was also a large minority after 1923, 360.000 Greeks of Constantinople, imbros and tenedos Islands, excluded from population exchange.

      @@RaptorJesus just a correction though the turkish minority of Greece was nothing less than islamized greeks who most of them could not even speak Turkish. They exchanged with the Christian Greeks and settled in the same regions Christian greeks used to live, north east coast of Turkey (trabzond) and western turkey (Antalya, Smyrna, Ephesus, Nikomidia, Prusa)

    i'd be interested to know what Richard Davenport-Hines connections are. those who made this documentary shouldn't simply leave his opinion as fact, which they do by presenting him only as a member of a historical society, if he is well-known to have an agenda, as i suspect. he seems to expect the audience to dispense with common sense, which is either arrogant of him or desperate.
