A fun thing me any my friends did was three player Dukematch, but set the one bot to the highest skill level. Then we would hole up somewhere defensible and venture out to hunt the Evil Duke. If a hunt went wrong the remaining players would retreat back to the base and defend it from the Evil Duke. The respawning player had to avoid him long enough to make it back to safety. It was SUPER tense and incredibly fun.

Something I appreciate about Duke Nukem 64, is that for the most part the secret levels feel like natural progression paths in the game. Yes, you can now play Duke64 in multiplayer on PC :) Now we just need someone to be crazy enough to reverse engineer the Saturn version... Hey mate, I just wanted to say I was really surprised/mpressed by the production quality and the information provided. Please keep it up, you're only bound to be successful! Great work!
While the biggest complaint most have with this version of the game was the lack of music (outside of the main title theme remix, which is IMO, the best version of Duke's theme), I actually didn't mind it. Granted, this was my introduction to Duke, but even in retrospect, after having played nearly all of the various other versions of the game, I actually kinda prefer the ambience of the N64 game. It's probably got a lot to do with nostalgia as well, but there's something about Duke 64 that feels much more atmospheric and many times times, genuinely unsettling. Not to mention that Duke 64 was the first version to feature true 3D polygonal environments. I recall playing the original PC Duke, as well as the X360 'remaster'back in the day and being immediately turned off by the screen perspective warping every time you look up and down. Of course newer ports of Duke 3D now feature true 3D environments just like the 64 version did, but even when I play these versions, I find myself muting the BGM just to fully immerse myself into that nostalgia-filled romp through Duke 3D's early 3D interpretation of LA (and the moon). Not to mention, without music, Duke 3D really gives off the sensation of 'liminal spaces', which has become pretty popular these days.
My brother and I first experienced Duke 3D on our Saturn in 1997 or so and we enjoyed it a lot. Then, later in the 2000's I got used to the PC source ports, but I still fire up the original 1996 release on DOSBox as it has a unique atmosphere and charm that higher resolutions can't match. A few years ago I decided to play Duke 64 on Retroarch (Mupen64 Core) and the good thing is that you can adjust the controls as you'd like. I didn't know what to expect aside from the game being toned down, but I enjoyed this version quite a bit, the differences more than make up for it and I noticed that what makes Duke 3D a great game isn't its macho tone and sexualized women (but even so, the game has more than enough of that, specially on secret areas), the new weapons are also great. Like you say, the total conversion for PCs is the best way to play it today.
I agree with almost all the points you made regarding the game. The change in how babes are approached especially is something I feel like future Duke games can learn from; He's a hero, he may be a bit of a chauvinistic prick at times, but when it matters, he does the right thing. Duke64 on Rednukem is my favorite way to go through the game again unmodded these days.

I'd love a video about the game's maps! I had no idea they were expanded like this, I really like it. I'd be awesome to have a version that captures all of the version's differences!
Awesome! I've never looked into this version of Duke3D, but it seems to be one of the more interesting ports. Now I wanna get it for my N64 lol. Great video as always!
Remember renting this with my brother, we loved it so much we managed to steal it from the video shop by swapping the sticker on the cartridge with Mario 64.
I owned duke 64 as a kid. Had a blast with it, especially death matches with my brothers. I dont think itll ever get to the same level of respect today as doom 64, but it was a worthy port.
Same here, man. I had a blast playing this with my brothers. I think the fact that Doom 64 gets so much more attention is probably because it's an original game. While it's great, I still prefer Duke 64! Thanks for stopping by. :)
@revenantevil I agree with a lot of what you say in the video. I love how you can save the babes, it adds an interesting new gameplay mechanic to things, and the way the levels are fleshed out with more detail makes them all feel more lived in and realistic than even what the PC original managed. I also agree the lack of music makes the game world feel more immediate.
Really enjoyed that, never played the console versions and you have a good clear overview of the highlights. Just subscribed to avoid Duke giving me the mighty foot 😅
I find it cool how you can see Gun Crazy from Rabid Transit. I always theorized that they included the reference because of the fact that Gun Crazy is one of the only levels that you don't get to nuke with the exit button. (Unless you take the secret exit for Duke Burger)
It really is a fantastic version, definitely my favourite console port! The weapons kick ass. Had a ton of fun playing it co-op with my brother back in the day. Thanks for watching :)
Always preferred this version over the regular 3d. The grenade launcher, the special ammo types and coop made things so much more fun. Plus the bots on death match were always fun to play against.
In my opinion this is a really solid way of playing DN3D, or better in some cases, especially with all of the cooler things about it like weapons and extended levels
I was always curiose about the 64 version, once I found out it has diffrent looking / acting weapons and some maps been expanded up on. I kind of drew parallels to Doom64 with was also diffrent from its PC counterpart. I never got to play it. But I think if i would play now it definitly would be thougth the total conversion on PC. For the port, I think what I like alot is the safing of the babes feature. I kind of wonder why this was never part of the orginal game. Considering how Duke one liners "nobody steals out chicks". Would make you guess its in his interest to safe them rather just leave em in the green goo? Also like to convratulate you for reaching your 1000 subs. Love your Duke videos. Always a pleasure and watch.
Doom 64 is great but a completely new game. I recently played it thru and had a blast. I'm with you on saving the babes, it's a great feature and probably helped them with some of the censorship hurdles. Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it! Cheers! :)
even with all the flaws, ill STILL take the N64 version over the PC version, any day! the 2 player mode was also fun, if you die u just respawn at start. jump on the other player's head to get on higher platforms. with monsters that had a rare chance to insta kill you, even with 200 health and 100% armor! (that not many people talk about) and multiplayer... That was best to play with real people because the bots can be very dumb most the time! like getting stuck next to a door! not to forget the OP explosive shells! flying around with a jetpack, 1 shot killing anyone that gets in your zone lol
That's what I did last time I played... got TH-cam up and played the right music for each level. Bit of a chore for something that should already be there though, right? Lol. Thanks for watching :)
Memory would definitely have been an issue, not just storage space, but also how much you can load into memory at once. Every texture, every sprite, every tile that makes up the interface and menu, that all has to be loaded to be used, and it all adds up. That's together with everything else which needs to be loaded into memory too. This is why loads of compromises had to be made for all the console ports of Doom and Duke at the time, cut down and simplified level geometry is one thing, but you've also gotta reduce the variety in textures used, and sometimes in monster variety. Looking at Doom, the big Spidermind boss is very seldom used (even being omitted in all levels in the Final Doom port), because the frames are huge and takes up lots of memory, and he sucks anyway, while the Archvile is plain too many frames to handle period. For PSX Duke, the explosion sprites are cut in half and then mirrored, no doubt the music is absent in Duke 64 because they just couldn't fit it in.
After decades of playing the n64 and pc 3D version, only now watching this video I spotted this Easter egg: on the first level, at the sign that in the 3D version it asks "Innocent?", the later n64 version has "guilty!". 😮 So they answered the question.
This version is the best in terms of gameplay, the weapons are way better than the 3D version... I really wish there was a stand alone mod for Duke 64 that directly ported over the weapons. The SMG are able to actually target more than one alien at a time because of the auto aim and them being dual wielded, the grenade launcher has way more utility and the plasma cannon has a NUKE... There are also more than 30 levels if you count the deathmatch maps. You can play this natively on pc with Red Nukem and it's honestly the better way to play it over the original hardware, PLUS with Red Nukem 64 you can play with music and turn off texture filtering.
@@revenantevil Yeah I've played the TC, The native Duke 64 PC port "Red Nukem 64" is better since it's using the actual ROM from the N64. The TC just tried to remake the game from scratch, so when I play it I end up noticing all the things wrong with it like the Grenade physics and SMG only damaging one enemy instead of two at the same time.
I was hoping you'd be able to tell why they changed the Ripper to the SMGs or the changes at all really. Guess this will always be a gaming mystery to me. Although I did like the new ammo types.
I don't know for sure, but I imagine it was just to make it stand out. I found a tiny bit of beta footage of this yesterday that was using the PC's pistol. Wish I'd have known about it while making this video. Thanks for watching!
Honestly, I didnt mind the no music. I remember making the game more scarier and serious. I personally didnt mind the censorship. I olayed the multiplyer to death with my brothers. I miss those days. I wish there was more content, Total Meltdown saw a new episode, would of been nice to have seen this version expanded.
Interesting Port, censorship aside, the gameplay and its weapon rosters feels like a remixed or an enchanced version of Duke 3D until the Legacy Edition arrived and it became the real deal
Some of the censorship is baffling, like replacing sexual themes with gore, but I quite like the mechanic of saving babes. Duke64's implementation is a bit cartoonish, but it works. One thing about losing parallax skies is that it makes the space levels a bit bland, as they couldn't add a lot of geometry outside the playable area. Anyway, a deep dive into the level changes would probably make an interesting video.
Agreed. Those babes are gruesome! I noticed that episode 2 has barely any changes. You think it's because of the sky box? I'll have to make sure I properly research this if/when I do the levels video. Thanks for the comment! :)
@@revenantevil It's probably because of the theme, it's hard to come up with new geometry you can add in space, at least outside the playable area. I only wish they came up with some way to render stars, so you are not staring into the black void, but it's a only minor gripe.
The fact that the PC game had adult content for it and certain things, Doesn't make the 64 pale. I liked the ammo types, you could have other explosives than just the other weapons. In a way the replacement of the RPG to the grenade launcher added some tactical use of the weapon and also it has a lot of ammo. while you can carry less, you had 12 rounds per pickup, which is easy to fill and encourage its use. My only gripe is the ammo types weren't easy to switch, I do think the PC mod have the switch available by changing weapons. so you can use them by just alternating between versions of the weapon. Actually a nice duke mod can be a various inclusion of various weapons that appear through the games. I don't mean all but at least some who had a particular functionnality at least. Zero hour had a lot of weapons for example. So duke can get a subsequent arsenal to blow aliens up. My main gripe here is that duke nukem doesn't have a proper sequel even if the current 2001 DNF is having a proper treatment. Which is something that was missing from the actual DNF. They planed a lot of ammo types, a nice arsenal who was a lot diminished in the final game. (they basically took the old stuff and added 3 alien guns) meh ! I kind of like having original weapons in my FPS and considering the whole trend of oldschool shooters Duke have its place :)
This version had the best weapons, the RPG, pistol looks way better, the plasma cannon is pure destructive ASMR and the SMG's are, in my opinion, cooler.
If you read my sources (in the description), the one from Nintendoplayer... you'll see that, according to Nick Dry, who worked on the game, it was all Nintendo. There's also a bit from George Broussard in there criticising Nintendo and their censorship. But I was just having fun in the video anyways :)
@@revenantevil Having spoken directly with the heads of both GT and Eurocom, no. It was done internally anticipating the demands. Games like Shadow Man, Doom 64, Resident Evil 2, all made it to the console uncensored.
@@OpenMawProductions I can totally believe that actually. I'll take your word for it! Do you have them on record saying that? Either way, that's really interesting, and you're right, those games are uncensored. I wonder if Capcom voluntarily put the blood colour option in RE2, then? Thanks for the insightful comments :)

@@revenantevil TTK I think better balanced as in levels, humor, etc. Duke 3D for Megadrive/Genesis was always an interesting oddity. Waiting for your video ;)
I want to see a video about the level changes. I actually like Duke 64 more than the base version, it was the first version of the game I owned myself as I was too young to play the Pc version and my dad wouldn’t buy it, though I played the shareware episode. DUKE 64 was definitely one of the better ports made for a game I really prefer the different weapons and updated looks in Duke 64, the weapons feel bland in the original version to me. But World Tour doesn’t give an option to use the Duke64 weapons Its multiplayer mode sold me on the game, I played it a lot in solo deathmatch against bots. For some reason I had so much fun playing that I also owned Total Meltdown on PS1 and I didn’t like it much because the framerate was always bad and there was no easy way to play multiplayer except with a cumbersome link cable
@@revenantevilthank you very much, and for making this one too! Always wanted a video comparing 3d to 64 that was thorough I’m still watching this video too, the music at 17:58 sounds a lot like it’s from Blackthorne..
The increased gore at the expense of anything remotely sexual is actually mocked in the second level of the game. If you look at the neon sign for "Simon Coe's Gun Boutique" you'll notice the "mon" isn't it up, making it say "Si Coe," or "psycho." The game still had an 18 rating in the UK due to the violence, which meant all the mature content from the original game could've been left it with complete impunity, so it's almost certainly making fun of American censorship standards. It was ported by British people after all.
I have to agree - really impressive for the most part. It's a shame they didn't manage to put some music in there but it's still fantastic overall. Thanks for the comment! :)

Remember renting this with my brother, we loved it so much we managed to steal it from the video shop by swapping the sticker on the cartridge with Mario 64.
Amazing vid, bro! keep the king alive. I usally drop your vids in fangroups
Legend! Thanks man, I really appreciate it! :)
I actually consider it my definitive version of the game - all the extra details in the levels really tip the scale for me.
It's amazing. I love the changes for the most part. What is your favourite aspect of Duke 64? Thanks for watching :)
Good stuff keep em coming brotha
Cheers man! :)
Really enjoyed that, never played the console versions and you have a good clear overview of the highlights. Just subscribed to avoid Duke giving me the mighty foot 😅
Haha cheers dude! Appreciate it :)
I find it cool how you can see Gun Crazy from Rabid Transit. I always theorized that they included the reference because of the fact that Gun Crazy is one of the only levels that you don't get to nuke with the exit button. (Unless you take the secret exit for Duke Burger)
Had a blast with this game. Played tons of Co-op and multi player.
Lack of music sucks but I loved the redone weapons even more than 3D.
It really is a fantastic version, definitely my favourite console port! The weapons kick ass. Had a ton of fun playing it co-op with my brother back in the day.
Thanks for watching :)

I am interested in a deeper dive in the hidden areas / differences with the N64 version. Or any of the Duke 3D ports for that matter.
It's a great version for sure. Definitely worth checking out if you've only played the original
Duke nukem 64 always felt more classic duke from 1 and 2
Quality content as usual 👋 Thanks
Thanks dude!
I like the weapons skins o the 64 version and the dukematch was amazing. I playes that so much
Brought back good memories and was very insightful! Plan on doing Zero Hour at some point?
Thanks man! I've recently played through Zero Hour so I'll have to make a video soon! Cheers! :)
Yes, i would like to have a video about the level changes of DN64!
(that not many people talk about)
and multiplayer... That was best to play with real people because the bots can be very dumb most the time! like getting stuck next to a door!
not to forget the OP explosive shells! flying around with a jetpack, 1 shot killing anyone that gets in your zone lol
It's just pre- Ion Fury on N64
Mann do a video about the extra secrets/ out of bounds with no clip on or similar. I would love to see that!
Great video!!
16:46 same here 😂
Let's play together, brother! :P
😆Really nice video by the way, hope you do some for Quake 1 & 2, Turok 1 & 2 & Doom 64 😎 @@revenantevil
@kawamikazecheant definitely have those games in my sights, man! Love them all! :)
funny thing is i had this as a kid and could never find the grocery store it wasn't till i saw this video that i saw how to get to it lmao
as a kid i always thought the blurry textures were a form of censorship, never occurred to me that it was a hardware issue lol
My biggest gripe was the lack of a soundtrack. I used to play the total meltdown ost while playing duke64.
That's what I did last time I played... got TH-cam up and played the right music for each level. Bit of a chore for something that should already be there though, right? Lol.
Thanks for watching :)
This is how I first learned of Duke.....
It's a great version :) thanks for watching!
I always thought this version had the best rendition of the theme song
Really is a great version, such a shame they couldn't fit the rest of the sound track on there! Thanks for watching :)
Best way to play this game:
RedNukem Port + PSX ost
The lack of in game music always gave this version an eerie last man on earth atmosphere to me
Completely agree. It's kinda spooky in a way. It is a shame there's no music though. Thanks for stopping by :)
Everyone talks about the Face on Mars, but why does no one talk about the Butt on Mercury
Lmao. Is that what's in your display pic?
@@revenantevil No, I am the Eyeball beneath the Pyramid.
What about the fissure on Uranus?
This seems like a very worthy port. Which means I'd not be pissed if this was the only Duke 3d the world ever got.
Much unlike the PSX counterpart...
You left out that you can modify the controls to “control stick move”which just makes it like goldeneye but aiming up and down needs the d pad
Ah, so this is where Alien Armageddon gets the arsenal.
Nice review
Thanks!
17:22 it's a Wolfenstein reference.
21:23 it's called data, not 'code'.
Yeah I picked up on this too but still failed to mention it! Thanks for the correction :)
Duke 64 is enough of an improvement and change that it's worth playing along side 3D.
Now the only Duke Nukem 3D ports left is the GameCom and the Mega Drive versions.
Am I brave enough for that? Probably... :p I've been looking into picking it up for Mega Drive but it's pretty pricey.
@@revenantevil no one is gonna blame you for emulating it just make sure to have a NTSC filter on while recording
Used to play multiplayer with bots all the time. Was fun mimicking their movement. 10/10 liked it more than goldeneye
I loved both games so much as a kid but would end up playing way more Duke because of the co-op mode. Great fun! Thanks for stopping by :)
After decades of playing the n64 and pc 3D version, only now watching this video I spotted this Easter egg: on the first level, at the sign that in the 3D version it asks "Innocent?", the later n64 version has "guilty!". 😮 So they answered the question.
Well noticed! Both signs appear on the PC version, but I'd have to check if they're both on n64. Thanks for the comment! :)
Hail to the king baby!!☢️☢️☢️
Hell yeah! Thanks for watching! :)
The weapons kick ass, especially love that grenade launcher. Have you played the TC? :)
No music is no problem, I like to play my AC/DC records while playing this game.
Good choice! Very fitting. Thanks for watching!
@@revenantevil Yeah man, great video!
Best grenade launcher ever.
I bought this game as a fan of the PC version, then took it back. The lack of music was depressing. It's totally unacceptable.
The lack of music was my only complaint about this port of the game.
When ports actually meant something.
I kind of like having original weapons in my FPS and considering the whole trend of oldschool shooters Duke have its place :)
i liked the N64 version of duke nukem 3d but hated that it had no music
This version had the best weapons, the RPG, pistol looks way better, the plasma cannon is pure destructive ASMR and the SMG's are, in my opinion, cooler.
No arguments from me dude! I freaking LOVE Duke 64.
Thanks for watching :)
5:38 Nintendo was not responsible for the censorship in Duke Nukem 64.
That was solely the work of Eurocom.
I’m here to kick ass and chew bubble gum and I’m all out of gum
I just accidentally came across this video. I enjoyed it and subbed your channel. Are you gonna review DN: Time to Kill?
Glad to have you here! And yes, I do plan on doing TTK and LotB. Also Zero Hour. Thanks for the comment! :)
@@revenantevil Great! :) nice to hear.
@@revenantevil I think TTK is kinda underrated game, but LOTB I find it way too juvenile (as DNF).
I agree that TTK is the better game. It's not perfect by any means, but it's great fun.
I should hopefully be releasing a video tomorrow (Duke 3D for Megadrive/Genesis), so stay tuned for that if you're interested! :)
@@revenantevil TTK I think better balanced as in levels, humor, etc. Duke 3D for Megadrive/Genesis was always an interesting oddity. Waiting for your video ;)

i always felt the Duke Nukem 64 version was more Horror like with the lack of music
I know what you mean, definitely makes it a bit more scary when there's no music pumping!
Can you please do a video on Hexen beyond Heratic? it's one of my fave games and is also on N64 and pc [steam]
I want to see a video about the level changes.
I actually like Duke 64 more than the base version, it was the first version of the game I owned myself as I was too young to play the Pc version and my dad wouldn’t buy it, though I played the shareware episode.
DUKE 64 was definitely one of the better ports made for a game
I really prefer the different weapons and updated looks in Duke 64, the weapons feel bland in the original version to me. But World Tour doesn’t give an option to use the Duke64 weapons
Its multiplayer mode sold me on the game, I played it a lot in solo deathmatch against bots. For some reason I had so much fun playing that
I also owned Total Meltdown on PS1 and I didn’t like it much because the framerate was always bad and there was no easy way to play multiplayer except with a cumbersome link cable
I will make the video when I get the time :)
Duke 64 is my favourite too. Thanks for watching!
@@revenantevilthank you very much, and for making this one too! Always wanted a video comparing 3d to 64 that was thorough
I’m still watching this video too, the music at 17:58 sounds a lot like it’s from Blackthorne..
Have you tried Doug Huggem yet?
The increased gore at the expense of anything remotely sexual is actually mocked in the second level of the game. If you look at the neon sign for "Simon Coe's Gun Boutique" you'll notice the "mon" isn't it up, making it say "Si Coe," or "psycho."
The game still had an 18 rating in the UK due to the violence, which meant all the mature content from the original game could've been left it with complete impunity, so it's almost certainly making fun of American censorship standards. It was ported by British people after all.
Only thing I was disappointed about with this port was the lack of music
I have to agree - really impressive for the most part. It's a shame they didn't manage to put some music in there but it's still fantastic overall. Thanks for the comment! :)
