The #15 Grey and Black E36 has the exhaust note I like. They all sound identical, but this one sounds like it has more muscle and less rasp.

An intake, manifold,cone filter probably, headers and decats with an exhaust as well as a seq. gearbox
i would say all the s50 engine components, race exhaust and a rev stop at 9-10k

Cams, valves, exhaust, probably different head or machined head. Many many many factors to the sound. But higher pitched usually also means more rpm.
