  • Dr John McDougall, the renowned author and physician known for his advocacy of low fat plant-based diets, has died aged 77.
In a statement, his family described him as a “beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor and friend,” and said that he died peacefully in his sleep last Saturday (June 22).
Dr McDougall pursued a healthcare career after suffering from a stroke aged 18. He was left with a lifelong disability as a result of the stroke, which gave him a passion for transforming the healthcare system.
He wrote a number of books on diets, including The McDougall Plan, which was a New York Times bestseller. He was a member of the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine, a nonprofit health organization promoting preventative medicine and advocating for plant-based diets.

Dr McDougall saved my life. It does kinda piss me off though, that he didn't outlive my mom who was morbidly obese and lived on grease. But there is no diet that can guarantee longevity. Any one of us can die at any time, for any number of reasons. Many of us are walking around with congenital malformations or inherited disease that we don't even know about. Dr McDougall didn't just have a stroke. He had a massive stroke with major paralysis. He blames his childhood diet, and i believe it because as a child, he had a host of other health problems as well. He went on to live a very unhealthy lifestyle as a young adult until he figured it out. I see a lot of people commenting that they want to know why John died. They want his family to go public with any details. I don't think it's anybody's business why he died. Personally, i don't need any reassurance that his diet works. I went from needing a walker, unable to lift five pounds, to super fit following John's recommendations. I am forever grateful. Thank you John. May you rest in peace.

I came off blood pressure medication on his diet 7 years ago at age 48, and I still don't need it and never will. I also prevented he need for statins very quickly. I need antidepressant but that is all. I probably didn't get the covid disease severely because of the diet. I got a bad cold once; just coughing, but I got better.

unfortunately his family are refusing to release his medical records, and they denied an autopsy. He acted neurotic and strange in some interviews. It may have been dementia, but who knows apart from his family. It looked like he had sarcopenia, he was very frail. You'd think they would be happy to release the medical records and show how healthy he was.

I never met the man yet this news makes me very emotional and sad. His lectures and plant based starch diet improved my life so much. In early 2019 before I began Dr McDougal’s diet I was literally afraid to get out of bed. I had been suffering with back pain for 16 years after breaking my back in 2003, but in 2019 it really flared up due to inflammation in my body from all the wrong food I was eating. Within about a week of starting the Dr McDougall diet my severe back pain went away and that inflammation just drained out of my body and I’ve been doing well since. So sad to think Dr McDougall is gone.

Almost all non-religious western people who became vegans earlier than the 70's had some serious health issue, and in fact many were/are victorious against the predictions of a short life, by their conventional doctors. A relative of mine had a severe kidney-disease in her twenties, her doctor predicted she would never see her 30th birthday, but she did live, and seemingly vitally, until she was 78 - she was vegan/vegetarian and avoided all white "poisons", too, sugar, salt, and white flour. Such cases of healing against all odds, are strong evidence for a healthy plant-based diet. In my own case I strongly lean towards ethical motives, too, not just my health. Thank you for a warm tribute to a passionate Hero.

I can think of several other well-known and respected plant-based doctors who likely would not eulogize John McDougall. You see, McDougall and his "best friend," Jeff Nelson, attacked and ridiculed other plant-based doctors, burning several bridges in the process. I'd settle for an autopsy. McDougall even attacked Dr. Atkins after his death, reading from his autopsy report. He also created a fake photo by pasting Dr. Atkins' face on a shirtless obese body. How would you eulogize John McDougall?

I think 77 is actually a good age, especially not living with any debilitating health problems in the run up to his death, like so many do. My dad died at 56 from heart disease, caused by a diet heavy in dairy & meat. I myself was diagnosed with heart disease at 45, as well as type 2 diabetes & hypertension, but after going vegan for the animals, I reversed all three & I'm now extremely fit & healthy. So every day I'm thankful, I got a second chance of life. I just wish I got chance to tell my dad to change his diet, because I'm sure if he had gone plant based, he would still be alive today. It's so important to spread the message of a plant based diet, because it is rarely promoted mainstream & it could save so many lives.

It is devastating news. He was still well enough to be doing everything as normal. But I remember him explaining the history of his stroke. He suffered a permanent disability when he had that stroke. So I can only imagine it was something to do with that disability. It's sad because he had begun to really campaign more intensively for the planet more than just on the diet side of being a vegan since he had given up seeing patients. He was really keen on campaigning for the kids who are inheriting our Earth. But that is still there for all of us to follow in the footsteps of his legacy.
My special thoughts for his wife Mary ❤

Guaranteed some people will take this and use it as an excuse to keep eating animal products while completely ignoring the fact he had a massive stroke at 18 because of animal products and the only reason he was able to live as long and as well as he did was because of his diet.

With time, the actual facts would suffice to replace the speculation.
Whatever the case, his legacy of nutritional advice will live on and continue to benefit so many.

I do not know how the heck I missed this!! Dr. McDougall was my start into plant-based dieting when I was 16. I had read his "12 Days to Dynamic Health" book. It was life-changing. Unfortunately, we cannot know what the actual cause of his death was because that information has not been released. And if it ever is released, carnivores will point fingers and have a new "what about." The fact is, all of us are not only dealing with diet but also with genes. The important thing is, let's live as well and compassionately as we can while we are here and plants help us do that. RIP, Dr. McDougall.🕯

A stroke early in McDougall's life might have something do do with his death at 77. Leukemia in his 40's might have something to do with Nathan Pritikin;s death at 70. Thank you so much for this. Rest in peace Dr McDougall. You’ve done so much for the world.
Also, just want to mention Dr Colin T Campbell age 90 and Dr Caldwell Esselstyn age 90, both still working as vegan doctors. Dr Ellsworth Wareham was a vegan cardiologist who turned vegan around 45YO after seeing what diet did to his patients. He lived to 104 and continued to train residents until well into his 90s. I’m not saying this because it’s a race. I’m saying this because each human has their life span, it’s not a uniform thing. You can see in these two doctors first mentioned they’re not only still alive but still very sharp and still full members of the community, helping others. Dr Wareham was the same. He was still sharp and aware and loving until he died at 104.
For the majority of people, eating fruits and vegetables is a compassionate choice that will improve your health, increase your life span and make life better while you’re here if you decide to do it.. To be working as a doctor to help people in your 90s is not usual! Nor is doing what Dr McDougall did, working right up until he passed at 77 then dying peacefully in his sleep. It’s extraordinary when most 77 year olds are in nursing homes or require constant care. I truly do not understand this antagonism towards people who choose to eat plants and encourage others to improve their health. It’s saddening. Again thank you for making this video and celebrating the life Dr McDougall gave to serving others. It’s an inspiration❤

Indeed, stroke at age 18 means serious genetic predisposition to such an illness and thus having a high chance of re-occurrence. Fact he remained healthy as a horse for almost the next 60 years after is a true testament of the power of a plant based diet. Carnists can mock hi and the diet as much as they want, but the fact is no one on their diet would last that long under the same circumstances.

77 is hardly an early demise. It’s about the average for a male in America. On top of that it sounds like he obviously had underlying health issues due to a stroke at such a young age, regardless of his diet back then. The man lived a long , rewarding life and if anything, extended it with his diet, seemingly still active and useful right up to the end.
