  • Canto five absolutely cooked. I was wondering how they were gonna follow the masterpiece of chapter 4 and they somehow followed that masterpiece. This story is so beautiful, Project Moon should stand proud, they can cook.

My interpretation is that Ahab believes that her crew is an extension of her, and Ishmael especially is like her 'successor'. If Ishmael had killed Ahab, she would symbolically BECOME Ahab, so when she then kills the whale after, it's symbolically Ahab that kills the whale, and the second best outcome for Ahab. Instead, Ishmael proves to her that she is nothing like her by letting go of her vendetta, before kill-stealing the Whale out from under her.
Watching this gaslighting bitch who had everyone by the balls this entire time completely break down into a delusional ball of coping and seething, screaming orders at a crew that no longer exists, was one of the most satisfying moments in storytelling I've ever experienced.

fun? fact: You cannot see clear Ahab's E.G.O sprite before the last fight, but if you brighten up the sprite, you can see the faces of Pip, Starbuck and Queequeg on the gas tanks. Also, if you look at Ahab's SD sprite closely when she uses Pip's ego, the oar somewhat resembles the side face of Stubb, the very reason why he felt guilt and gone crazy

About why Ahab didn't care if Ishmael kills her
One theory I saw was that if Ishmael follows her obsession that she should kill Ahab blindly, she is just like the other crew mates in Pequod that Ahab consider as "Ahab". So even if she dies and Ishmael kills the whale it would still be "Ahab" killing the whale. When Ishmael accepted the offer to kill the whale in exchange to killing Ahab afterwards, Ishmael is already "Ahab".
But Ishmael found herself by deciding to let Ahab live and kill the whale as her own decision instead to take away the purpose of Ahab. It would be Ishmael killing the whale instead of "Ahab" killing it. So Ahab didn't really care if she dies as the "Ahab" would still live on as Ishmael as long as Ishmael follows her blind obsession

      @2sword 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +52

I feel like it honestly wouldn't be strange if Ahab's EGO would spring a trap on Ishmael if she did go through with it via HxH style nen conditions. We already know it that it functions on people who got utterly gaslit by Ahab into being her 'tools'. There's bound to be effects on people who Ahab would call 'one and the same', making it literal.

    • @brandontsui313
      @brandontsui313 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +51

@@2sword The whole fight Ahab had been gaslighting Ishmael so that she would be overwhelm by her guilt. It would make sense if the purpose of that is to let Ishmael lose her sense of self and be consumed by Ahab's EGO. Ishmael was this close to losing herself showing by her being consumed by the pallid membrane from the whale(or Ahab). It was the sinners(Heathcliff and Dante in particular) that held Ishmael back from being consumed and finally found herself. If Ishmael continued her obsession towards Ahab and decided to actually kill Ahab, she might actually be consumed by GasHarpoon as she's one of the same as Ahab now.

We already know that Hermann is likely planning on destroying every reality outside the main timeline from Yi Sang's story, so its very likely that shes bullshitting to get her on board the boat. And then when it inevitably fails, again and again, Ahab is so caught up in her hatred, her vitriol for Ishmael, that when Hermann betrays her (and I know she will, it's basically already in the works), Ahab will just go berserk and distort right then and there.

Ishmael's decision reminds me of both previous Project Moon games. Ahab isn't *technically* wrong (that's just how gaslight works), and Ishmael is justified in wanting to enact her revenge. But, just like Angela or Roland would've played into the hand of the City, the correct choice for Ishmael doesn't lie in taking a life, either. That's for the Library, as for the Lobotomy Corporation - well, Angela couldn't be done with Ayin before the Seed of Light is done, so the only other option would be to steal his life's work, and for Ishmael that works too.
I thought this fight was supposed to have 4 phases, where the extra phase goes before Pip is loaded, and the gem has a yellow color.
People say Ahab should've Distorted after Ishmael's big act. But the thing is, Ahab is too self-centered to hear anyone's voice except her own, and Carmen can't give her *the* Pallid Whale to harpoon.
Given that Hermann intends to destroy the Mirror Worlds, I foresee an event in the future where her interference changes our Identities. For example, we lose Shi Ishmael and Shi Heath now has negative coins.

38:35 "Now we have become one and the same, Ishmael!(27:29)" My interpretation is that Ahab saw that Ishmael was becoming exactly like her. If Ahab couldn't kill the whale, she would at least settle for someone who had "become Ahab" killing the whale instead, since it would still be "Ahab" killing the whale (Similar to how she considers her crew to not be separate beings from herself -- "they are already Ahab"). However, by ignoring her grudge and *not* killing the target of her anger, Ishmael showed that she was not, in fact, "Ahab," so the whale was killed by someone else.

Something I brought up in the prior videos was that despite Ishmael thinking she'd broken free, Ahab had still been influencing her this entire time.
After the incident with the whale, Ishmael: Started using a Harpoon, replaced her soft manner of speaking with a stern and commanding tone, likewise also becoming more commanding, she also grew out her hair, something that Queequeg mentions the past Ishmael thought was just a burden. She also developed an all consuming obsession with killing her 'Whale'. Just like Ahab.
We see it get worse as soon as the Palid Whale makes itself known. Like we literally watch her chapter by chapter lose what little Sanity she has left, until we're witnessing her making her own 'Ahab' speech while commanding the rest of the sinners to row into its mouth.
Combine that with the events of this fight, where Ahab goes 'They are already 'Ahab"' and blames Ishmael every chance she gets during the battle, I think she was, in her own twisted way, trying to turn Ishmael into herself, perhaps even her successor. And if Ishmael killed Ahab, it wouldve sealed her fate as the new 'Ahab'. And since she was 'Ahab', even if the original died, 'Ahab' would kill the white whale, completing her goal regardless.
But through Dante of all people, Ishmael found herself, and killed the whale, not as 'Ahab', but as Ishmael, ruining Ahab's plan. A cruel twist of Fate but... Ahab definitely deserved it for what she has done.

Canto 5 has been great for a lot of reasons, but one thing that really stands out is how hard that POV shot of Ishmael approaching Ahab is. I hope we get to see something like that again at least once or twice because it was really cool.
Also, Tsunul had the exact same thought process I did with targeting the heart early and then targeting yourself when it didn't work- and seeing that again made me chuckle.

Just because I haven't seen anyone else mention it... I understand the preference for short hair Ishmael, but it makes sense she let her hair grow, it makes her hair look like the sunset, which is even highlighted in that final cutscene, where she stands in front of the sunset. It's one of the few ties she has to her old crew.

Just gonna say that I love the use of the little announcer box to have Dante interject rather than text on screen or in a skill check window. A lovely little twist on a familiar yet overlooked mechanic as PM often likes to do
I also feel like drawing a comparison between our last two bosses, dongrang and ahab. Dongrang was with us for the entire chapter to get used to, and largely unimportant to the actual fights we were having, whilst Ahab only appears in part 3 so all her characterisation has to fit into less dialogue (and it was wonderfully densely packed)
Yet I feel their presentation also matches their character to a certain degree. Dongrang, so scared of being left in the background or unable to achieve anything, was repeatedly sidelined for parts of chapter 4. Meanwhile Ahab’s presence is felt throughout the entirety of chapter through Ishmael. She may only show up in the dungeon but she has a grip on Ishmael that doesn’t let go until the end of the fight. By the time we met her we already knew a warped version of her, and she turned out to be even more twisted in ways Ishmael couldn’t show us

39:00 so my interpretation is basically this:
During the whole fight we see that Ahab is a very selfish person who prides herself in having very clear-cut and absolute ideals. Thus she forces them onto her crew and they essentially become her. Much like how in the original book the crew eventually was fueled by the same madness who led Ahab to kill the whale. This is further reinforced by her crew literally putting their lives on her hand and them literally becoming Ahab by the process of her EGO.
Now what she means by wanting Ishamel to kill her is very simple. As you pointed out, Ahab is the White whale of Ishmael. Meaning that if Ishmael killed Ahab she would have done nothing but further reinforce Ahahb's way of life and how right she truly was. But also, just like the crew merges with her as they follow her ideals and abandon theirs, Ishmael too would have become Ahahb. Not literally in this case Ahahb would still be dead but you get the gist.
She wanted to kill Ishmael but the more they fought and the more she saw that they were one and the same (during the fight at least) so in the end, to Ahab it was either killing the Whale herself, or killing it thought Ishmael (Ahab). By seeing Ishmael refusing her ideals, not hunting HER white whale, she has gone against everything Ahab believed in and "someone else" ended up killing Ahab's whale.

In canto 1 and 2 he didnt manage to do anything in canto 3 he managed to help sinclair but he did not manage to understand him,id say canto 4 was the big stride forward with dante but he was still quite passive then HE BECOMES THE GOAT at canto 5 he both understood ishmael and actively helped her to the point where the one member of the limbus with probably the most bottom of the barrel disgustingly traumatising experiences with authority trusts dante like a compass. All im saying is peak character development though it could also help that dante and ish kinda got along from the start if i had to say who dante has had the most positive experience working its probably gregor(but gregor is just chill like that) and ishmael and her not fearing telling the truth (cough cough proffesional boot licker outis).some other notes about this chapter is and id never thought id ever say this ryoshu is actually kinda likable now, faust is standing menacingly at the back in the shadows in the credits and yi sang wholesomely trying to be friends with everyone is so funny

Perhaps something with heathcliff literally or metaphorically buried in a coffin, since him having cathy's coffin opened to see her after death is a famous(ly exaggerated) scene in wuthering heights (and he has both his and her coffins modified so they'll be laying together in death), and ishmael digging him out. So far the Great Lakes is the coolest place in the City to me just because there is so much untapped potential on what can be found there. Sucks we can’t see more of them but the Whales we did see were pretty cool.
Dante’s confidence in this chapter was very refreshing. Not only has he gotten better at clapping back he has also gotten better at stumbling through this world without his memories
I also find it funny that Ahab was the ultimate gaslighter so much so that her E.G.O. was called gasharpoon 😭

Actually, can we talk about Ishmael's hair for a bit? I know I sound like a simp or something but there's something I noticed thinking back on it (or at least, it's my interpretation of things)
Which is pretty much the reason it's how it is: Queequeg.
Allow me to elaborate, throughout all the flashbacks we've seen Ishma has had her hair short ( a contrast so glaring it rivald Angela's own transition from long to short), and when Starbuck recognized her after nearky Harpooning Ahab when we first arrived to Pequod Town he mentioned how she always said that longer hair was impractical thus she'd never style it that way. Which then begs the question, why does she have it?
Well, recall the conversation between her an Queequeg on deck, Ishma is pretty much the reason she likes sunsets and why similarly to a Dying Whale looking for it, a sunset would be the last thing she'd want to see. So taking this AND the fact that Ishma thought she died like the rest of the crew (Sans Ahab) on their first hunt, I could see Ishma letting her hair grow out so that it's easier to Queequeg to look at it from the afterlife since she died in a place where the sun can't reach, regardless lf whether or not she can (so a bit of like a way to mourn her)
Or something like that (feel free to let me know how wrong I am below)

I wonder if your going to do a video essay for Canto V, but one thing I enjoyed the most is how the fact that Ismael visualized herself being in a cocoon, as it means they don't know what to do or don't have a purpose or a path to follow. In the final battle we see that the pallid membrane covered her like a cocoon, and it was Heathcliff that helps her break out. Like the time where Queequeg saves her from the whale oil and the rope and blinding lights representing there bond and a future. But because Queequeg thought she Ismael was dead she buried in mind meaning snapping the bond they had. Captain Ahab, manipulation and obsession was the only thing keep her crew from becoming mermaids, and since Queequeg wasn't able to defy her order's she never was able to make her own chooses or had desires so in a sense she didn't break free from her cocoon. The motif of compass is used a lot, as how Ahab will use her own crew as sacrifices to go towards her goal like a compass will do, and the whole idea as the Mili song call compass, says " my compass was swallowed by the sea" show how Ismael didn't have a reason to continue if she had achieved her goal. Her obession to kill Ahab was at first the only thing driving her the entire chapter, but like how Ahab would had predicted she was just going to follow in her plans, not choosing it herself. Ahab compared how they are similar where she was hunting the Pallid whale, Ismael was hunting a pallid whale with Ahab face on it. As most sinners overcame there trauma in the end, Ismael decides not to kill her as a show of her letting go of that obession that was haunting her. In the end Ismael still seeks to follow her own path, but while there mission / journey is to collect all the golden boughs, she wants to see it until the end. Lastly, her trust in Dante was restored in this chapter and decide to go with them as he became her compass for the time being. I can't wait to see Heathcliff's chapter as I wonder if Ismael will play an important role in helping him overcome his problems. If I made any mistakes in my analysis feel free to point them out.

I know Ahab having her meltdown after Ish killed the Pallid Whale is great, but look at it this way.
A Distortion is usually created from a breakdown of one's world views, like Yan realizing nothing he did mattered and he had no free will. Ahab having her very reason to exist and life's purpose robbed from her should have turned her into a distortion on the spot. But Ahab's will is so fucking iron she could delude herself into thinking it was still alive out there, her belief of that so steadfast and genuine Ahab kept her EGO manifested instead of losing it or distorting. Even in the state she was in when Hermann found her she still had it. That's got to be worth something.
Also fun detail on that scene with Hermann. Ahab loses her special title and color when she's first talking, but once Hermann brings up the idea of there being other Pallid Whale's it causes Ahab to gain her Captain of Prequod Town title and green name color back.
GasHarpoon's a bit of an odd fight in my experience. If you don't level up your Sinners Sanity fast enough, Ahab can really snowball and become almost unstoppable with her insane Sanity restoration since your Sinners won't be winning any clashes to restore sanity. It kind of forces you to spam Fluid Sack or any sanity restoration move if you want to even out the fight right away.
Also she hits really hard sometimes. Pip's attack will insta-stagger anyone not a tank if you let it get off, Starbuck's just fucking murders and outclashed some attacks it really shouldn't have for me sometimes, and I don't remember the issue with Queequeg but I'm pretty sure it hit hard, too.
It's funny. The Ahab, Starbuck, and Queequeg fight is arguably harder but GasHarpoon took me way more tries until I gave up on my self imposed rules and spammed Fluid Sack to restore sanity and force the fight back into my favor. It makes me feel guilty to spam one of the strongest EGO to win a fight, but GasHarpoon was getting on my nerves and I was still sick at the time of fighting.

      Tips for big bro:
Bring blunt damage. Everyone in that fight is weak to blunt damage, and you need to kill BB as fast as possible
Bringing people resistant to blunt is good too because they all deal blunt damage
Stall in the first 2 fights a bit to farm ego materials, so you can spam ego in the end
You have to stagger BB twice or get him to half health to win the fight, so hard focus him. Preferably completely ignore his two grunts, but if you feel the need to deal with them, stagger them without killing them because killing them makes Bb even stronger
Seriously focus fire Bb as much as possible. Use hard hitting EGOs to get past his high Evade so that you can freely hit him in the face
Ishmael literally can’t die in this fight until everyone else is dead, so if worse comes to worse, use her to tank stuff

They really do be messing with us shippers though, all the scenes towards Queequeg really tore at my heart too.
'Compass' & Ishmael's 'Sarajinae' were way prettier than I was ready for too, I wonder if we're going to be getting a Mili song next Canto though considering the news with their lead singer. Curious if they'll delay it for that if they feel the need.

I really like how the Choice prompt at the end Specificies wrath driving Ishmal forwards as mind whip the wrath skill is the only skill that could complete that first check.

Ishmael's story tells how we'd rather stick to what consumes us, as long as it's unwavering; much more preferable than terrifying, paranoid fear of heading int future with nothing firm to hold onto. Since chapter 1 she was looking so hard towards Dante being confident, unwavering, someone who knows what they're doing and who she can follow without fear of stranding. Since chapter 1 she was hoping Dante can be stronger than she is.
Someone mentioned that her conviction was so strong, it was overwriting the crew, so that the whale's influence could not take over - hence membrane grew over only after Ishmael made a dent in their blind devotion. Ahab's conviction was devouring their selves, but it was firm and unwavering: it was pointing the direction for them. And to those lost at sea, the lighthouse is only hope.*
Terror of uncertainty is so much harder to face.
We, too, know this feeling. The fear of going into future with doubts, the fear of unknown and heading into it all by yourself, with noone by your side. I would avoid and put away every smallest change in my life, unless i had something certain, steady rock to stand on. Something to grab tight, to weather the unknown. Something to pin the responsibility for showing me the way.
It was not a sad chapter, yet i could not stop crying for two days: with every chapter PM drills a hole in my heart - point blank where all the sores are - watching as all the dark and muddy feelings are flushed out, like residue sediment collected over years of being smothered inside. It's still scary to look ahead all by yourself and have to pick direction without anyone leading you... but we are capable. We definitely are.
*I now realized that Ishy would be one to fit Index ID: seeking something unshaken to point the way.

The orange light on Ahab's spear might be indication of how much Ishmael is being brainwashed

Canto 5 was amazing from start to finish, as an Ishmael fan from the start. Could'nt ask for more. ¿Did you knew that Ishmael quote on her base ego changes after the final fight of Canto 5?
Now other PM fans can't look at us like we are lame, Take that Outists.

One thing I noticed that made me confused was that we didn’t see Dante’s clock turn like we did with Yi Sang’s chapter.
Just something I expected to happen.

The counter bit in last phase, if no one else explained it, is based on the number if Queequeg EGO stacks Ahab has. For every 10 she has, she repeats it, which is why turn one it hit four times then the following turn it hit three times. Not a problem if you can easily clear her shield, but it can become an issue if she gets more stacks from the shield surviving two or more turns and refreshing.
Speaking of her Shield. It's baseline 10% if her max HP + .5% per Queequeg EGO stack so the first turn shield is really 25% of her HP.
