      Edit (5 seconds later): My own build (In a Corsair 900D) only has RGB strips around the inner part of the case, Nothing internally, fans/mobo/coolers/RAM, or anything else has RGB.

    I know that because of the way you measure pressure in a hydraulic system in any form of liquid system, you consider it a pressure drop. It's actually a pressure gradient, more specifically pressure is theoretically produced by something being in the way. So on the side above the obstruction from the direction of flow you see a significant increase in pressure whereas of course on the other side you see a significant decrease in pressure. I know I'm being pedantic but it really bugs me because the design is not to reduce the pressure drop the design is to maintain laminar flow, and it's often indicated by a pressure gradient difference but not always... This technicality actually matters in so much as what their designing and how they're achieving the heat transfer

    Welcome back, Jay. This is clearly a premium niche item. However I question the mounting on this design. That rubber gasket will "relax" over time a lot quicker than metal would, especially under a heat/cool cycle. It means you would probably have to regularly check the torque on your mounting screws. With all the manufacturing that’s involved and CNC machining I think the price is very fair. Is it worth it compared to some simplified stamped parts I don’t know, without a performance test it’s hard to say, but from simply a component manufacturing cost to selling price I don’t think they are gouging at all. This type of thing happens with R&D and pricing. The problem with a company like EK doing it VS Nvidia is their products have no intellectual property hurdle. You cant reverse engineer a GPU like you can for something like a water block. Eventually other companies will just make the product for far cheaper, it just takes time to catch up. Look at keycaps for example, companies like GMK were charging a premium and no one was really in their league at all, but now other companies are now within reach or even better then GMK and are charging a fraction of the price.

    • @letalissonus
      @letalissonus ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ironically, EK is one of those that used to be notorious for creating cheaper knock-offs, preferring always being the first to offer products and being known to have them in stock over creating actual quality products. There's sadly only very few reviews comparing water cooling blocks, but of the few I encountered EK's blocks always tend to be on the lower end - abysmal flow and bad to mediocre temperature deltas seems to be a very common thing with them. There's even been a few occasion of them stealing design ideas straight from pictures of other manufacturer's prototypes. Not to mention their preference for extremely cheap acryl glass - it might be the better choice for slapping RGB onto everything due to its transparency, but compared to e.g. acetal it's a really bad choice if you want durability. Acryl glass cracks easily and will develop micro fissures after a few years, which may at some point cause leaks. If you're like me and don't like replacing your entire PC every 3 years, using an excessive amount of acryl is a really bad idea.
      Just as a reference, Watercool's TR4/SP3r2 Threadripper/Epyc block is just half as expensive as that EK cooler, while being a single massive chunk of over 1kg of copper that covers the entire giant heat spreader. It performs extremely well, especially compared to EK's TR solutions, because they still put actual engineering into that block instead of just throwing more copper onto the problem - many of their products are actually follow-ups of custom designs developed for industrial customers. The difference in material cost is so huge that trying to explain these EK price increases with R&D is just pure BS, they're just money-grabbing.

    @marcm. ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just because I'm being pedantic today, while I agree with you 100%, that that is beyond the price point of most people, even the ones who would normally consider doing water cooling. The amount of engineering that went into that product, the new designs that sometimes not always, require new forms in which to make the stamped product, or the machining that is involved in the fin stack, where adding just a couple millimeters in each product adds significant time in the production cycle for 100,000 of them, I get why they're charging that much. They just can't amortize their tool costs which includes the software and the hardware, used to design this and make it, on enough of a scale to make that cost disappear. So it's not a case of they're just doing it to be more expensive, it's just that when you get to a certain amount of quality and low production, the price just gets controlled by the initial equipment tool and design costs... I'm actually not defending them on this, I think they should try and aim for a wider audience with a nearly the same quality that they're giving you there... 98% of the quality would probably reduce their initial and continual costs by 20%... So they might be able to bring that same product, well almost virtually the same product, for about that say 15% lower price than they're charging now so 30 to 40 bucks less... That might put it right at the edge of where a lot of people would be willing to pay

Only the block has been replaced to match the CPU. The original was a Danger Den MC-TDX 775.
      On top of all that, it was the first loop I ever built back in 2007. 😂 It's practically an antique but still works great.

    Jay & co - can we get maybe like a "water cooling at 3 different price points" video or something? See how cheap you can realistically water cool a PC, then a more typical 'budget' loop that your "average" enthusiast is likely to build, then a high end loop(without getting obnoxious with limited production stuff or whatever). It would be great to get this overall view of the current landscape.

You just line up the shapes. Like the triangles on the corner of a CPU.

    The team did a admirable job filling in for Jay, but also glad he's feeling better. Custom water cooling is just bound to be pricey, they have to account for the volume of likely sales and the quality of the product moreso than air coolers. You have to have some kind of cooling and there aren't any waterblocks for 1660's and core i3's out there. Few people can really swing a x090 nvidia card and a ryzen 9 or i9 rig and those that can may find value in a custom cooling solution or for practical reasons will make use of a very high-end AIO.

My first loop did cost less than that single block, but i did buy alot of 2nd hand parts thanks to users on OCN. Also the pricing is why I'm looking to just go 10th-11th gen Intel since my x99 Supremacy Evo block is still compatible and I love that block (last I checked Intel HEDT from x99/x299 have a larger IHS than 12-13th Gen).

    Glad to see you back Jay! I've been watching your channel since nearly the beginning and greatly appreciate your honest opinions. So thank you very much for your honesty! Kind of like you, Im an old dog and I have been building computers for a good 30+ years and water cooling for the last 14 or 15 years. As for EKWB I think they are trying to be the "Apple" of the water cooling world, but at some point given how much competition they have, they may learn a hard lesson if their stuff stops selling as much as they would like. Don't get me wrong, they have some nice quality products but they are quickly approaching a point where their products are not accessible to the vast majority of builders. After my last issue with one of their products and the insane hoops they made me jump through to warranty a blatantly obvious factory defect, I have washed my hands of EKWB and will probably be a very long time if/when I buy any more of their products. Even that aside, these new blocks would be a hard no for me.

    For me cost/performance is the major measure. Aesthetics do factor in but not at any price. More rubber seals equals more failure/maintenance points - also a thing.
    Optimum Tech tested Magnitude CPU block against Velocity a while back and found no difference in performance under stress. This made my decision really easy.
    There is no way on earth I would pay 250USD for a CPU water block unless it made a proper difference, I’m talking 30%, not the 1 or 2% (if that) margin of error. But as Jay said we are already at the max of what water cooling can do so even 5% is a fantasy.
    When putting people on the moon 1% matters, when cooling a cpu 5% is neither here nor there. $250? C’mon EK, are we all stupid or what?

    I've built computers for over 30 years, and I've never gone full-watercooling before. an AIO to the CPU has been enough. the pricing of this kind of product (especially here in Australia where everything is almost twice as expensive) really puts me off as someone trying to venture into 'hobbyist' territory for full watercooling options. watercooling here has never been cheap or popular, but price-gouging for the sake of it is uncool (pun intended).

    Welcome back Jay, glad to see you back in the studio. I also have mixed feelings about this block. Yes, it's a really expensive way to cool your CPU but looking at the ridiculous amount of machining and productization that is going on here it's completely understandable. EK are not going to get rich off this block but they are walking into the same problem as with all migrating products. The more expensive the product the less you sell so you have to put the price up. So, the less you sell. I know you're an enthusiast so you want the most balls to the wall of everything and that costs. Me personally I've got off that journey and I'm now playing with 'The most cost effective system that fits my needs." which obviously is highly subjective but nonetheless is interesting to a large number of people. I'm currently running a 12600K on a Prime Z690 MATX motherboard with 32GB of DDR4 memory. The GPU is an EVGA RTX3060TI and I'll probably spring for a RTX4070 later in the year. Maybe I'll eventually go for a 13700 but right now the 12600 plays the games I play and does the 2K Editing and 3D printing CAD that I have fun with. Maybe you could step back a bit and show what is a good balanced system from time to time.

    • @malphadour
      @malphadour ปีที่แล้ว

      There are other more machined and better made blocks on the market (Optimus and Techn to name just 2) that are close to half the price. EK are currently in a space where they are using brand power to drive up profits. If you talk to peeps who build open loops, very few use EK any more because there are comparable alternatives for a lot lot less money. I've not touched anything of theirs since the days of the EK Supremacy's - their last great performing but also well priced block. Since then they seem to have followed Corsairs model - everything now has an EK tax....
