This is just superb, been searching for "do collectible coins increase in value?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Wonenry Sonucas Approach - (do a google search )? It is an awesome one off guide for uncovering a proven options trading method to get fast results without the hard work. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my work buddy at last got great results with it.

If you are buying coins from any sight-unseen source, it's wise to buy slabbed coins whenever you can. It's not just an eBay thing. That is why they started third party grading services, so people could buy and sell without having the coin in hand. Of course, buying graded coins only makes sense for certain coins. Thanks for putting this out and hopefully it will help some people, especially those new to the hobby.

I agree. I've bought plenty of lower priced raw coins on Ebay to fill albums, but that's all. If I'm buying an expensive coin, I would only buy it slabbed. I've got a pretty good eye, but when there is a huge difference in value for a single grade difference, I'm not going to take that chance. Thanks for posting this information.

Why do I sell there well I don't have alot of choices honestly we don't have more then one local show. These videos do NOT hurt the good sellers it helps collectors learn who the bad sellers are, ebay has hurt itself and I don't see that changing. You don't need ebay you need a mailing list, start building it and your own website, then you can also sell on USA coin book and Facebook groups. Build your list and clientele. The most successful dealers did not need ebay to get started, it was just one tool in their arsenal of many.

During the shutdown, I started buying on EBay, and your right about the con artist. I am a retired photojournalist. I would say more then half of the coin images are high key, or a lot of shiny highlights and out of focus. It hides a lot. And you can’t correct it buy photoshopping it. So I just pass it up. Out of 10 coins maybe 4 was, actually Doubled Dies. Others were strike doubling or die Deterioration. And the four I bought will not bring any real money. They averaged MS63RD. They were 1963-D the 3 over 3 early variety, 1964 DDR, but you could see a finger print starting to turn. So I bought another one. That was fine except I grade it at MS62RD, then finally a 1972-D Double Die, but it was to me AU58BN. So none of these would be worth much more then 30 dollars at best. I paid an average of nine dollars for each coin. One seller sent me nine other coins with the order, he must have felt guilty. But the coins shows are going again so I am going back to traveling to them. It gets me out of Dodge now and then. Plus I am holding the coin in my hand instead on waiting on the mail.

Great video Dan. As I wrote elsewhere, I use ebay for coins and medals UNDER $300. And I avoid buying MOST classic coins before 1933, finally before I buy I check my blue book and then check the ANA Coin Grading book from 77 and PCGS Photograde. In other words, research.
And yeah, if I am going to consider buying a coin that on PCGS has the potential to resell in the future for many hundred, thousands or tens to hundred thousands I better damn well have a chance to see the coin IN PERSON.
Finally good point about people checking if the dealer on ebay actually has a brick and mortar store or well established and reputable. It is strange, it really isn't that difficult to do and I think by just doing that I have been able to avoid getting badly ripped off (no, I didn't always get the deal I want but that is the nature of ebay).

Absolutely I will share. I'm new to coin collecting and coin roll hunting and I was burned early on with a morgan that ended up being steel. Luckily I do do my homework so I was only out about 22 dollars but lesson learned. And your right about the grading. I have a 64 pennie that I know without a doubt because of the massive die break causing deep indentions in three spots while leaving the pattern and it also broke the collar and is ide guess 20% bigger on the obverse amd the reverse though well struck lost a good portion of the word states and its a looker in my opinion and some SMS sets from 66 and 67 with doubling some severe. And I'll keep an forever if I could never afford to grade them. I haven't had the money but I think I do now and looking for guidance. Thats why I like you, you tell us straight, without the ever so famous so buy my ( whatever ) NOW to prevent such and such. I appreciate as a noob what your knowledge is worh. I mostly use ebay for this stuff but the most i have spent on a coin was $50.
You can make a few home runs but you have to have a keen eye or be pleasantly surprised. Best way I have found is to use mid sized sellers as they seem to not know as much about some of the stuff they sell (or not search as thoroughly). I have gotten a key date canadian dime and some oddly high value coppers out of ebay lots. However, I do not recommend searching them out. there is often no way to tell what you will get in junk silver or bulk world coin lots and if the mistake is obvious then the bid will likely skyrocket or the buy-it-now will be snagged.
I am saying that, though not impossible to snag a home run, it is a very once in a blue moon thing

Thanks Daniel. Between Chinese fakes, eBay scammers, and Home Shopping channels collectibles are hard to buy. You have to find somebody you trust. Establish a relationship with a good dealer. That dealer will guide you to good coins and good buys, a repeat customer is their life blood. They appreciate the business and do their best to give you a deal. When they get a great buy, you will be their first call. But if you just want to buy low, low, low... you will get scammed, ripped off, and taken.

I always stayed away from buying coins online but particularly from eBay. However, during the lockdown I wanted coins/silver but wasn’t able to access my LCS. So, I gave ebay a shot. There are definitely a lot of shady people selling fakes or waaay over charging you but you can find great sellers and deals if you look and do your research. I’ve been 50/50 spending on constitutional silver that sells for melt roughly and buying foreign silver for my collection. The key to not getting ripped off is being patient and or doing your research so you know what something goes for. I once found someone selling a couple of Austrian 2 Corona’s from around 1910-1915.. that range but they wanted $80 a piece. At first I thought that might be a reasonable price because it was difficult at first to find listings and they were in decent shape. BUT.. I am forever grateful that I had the sense to google the coins first and found out that even in MS condition.. those particular coins were only valued around $12-$15 by PCGS or NGC. Now, I know people gotta make money and I understand raising the price enough to compensate for what eBay takes but that was just ridiculous. I sent him a message and told him I would be happy to buy them but was only willing to go as high as $20. He replied and said “he would have to discuss it with his partner but that he didn’t think they’d be able to accept such a *low figure..* but he would get back to me in a day or two.” Ever since then, whenever I go to buy a foreign coin or anything that’s selling even remotely above spot.. I always look up the value for that coin according to PCGS or NGC. If it’s no higher than 15-20% the stated value, then I get it. Of course, I always go the “make an offer” option if it’s there but I don’t low ball them. eBay also has protection for its buyers now if you get ripped off and you can get your money back. Still, it’s best to do your research first but they do have that safety net. I also recommend looking at sellers ratings first as well.. if it’s lower than 99% positive feedback.. then I probably wouldn’t risk it but if it’s lower than 95-97%.. then definitely don’t do business with them. Especially if they have a low communication score. Since March I have made several dozens purchases through eBay and have only had one package not come and given the current state of affairs.. I am chalking it up to an error on the countries postal service where it came from as it could still show up.. it is a month late but that’s not overly surprising atm. Sorry for the novel lol

I was gonna get a cc Morgan from a guy but then I saw in his reviews “please also leave me a positive review” hinting to a positive review for positive review meaning who knows if he just noted his reviews with random people by offering good reviews

Evening Daniel!! I don't understand why it's so hard for people to think "REPUTABLE COIN DEALER"!!!!!! One question. Are shows and auctions where you turn to if a customer wants you to find a key coin for them?

I've bought multiple coins off that guy. And you're right, he's dishonest. But once in a while, something will slip through the cracks and I've gotten AU or almost AU polished Morgans for 19 - 24 dollars. That was before the spike in silver price. I don't trust him at all, but his coins are genuine meaning really silver and not fake, and like you said, you need to understand what you're looking at. If I can get them for the right price, I just pull them out of the marked up holder it's sent in and throw it in a tube. It may be just me, but I'd rather have a polished AU than a slick natural. Again, this guy is not honest, you have to pick your auctions wisely.

Awesome video! eBay is bad, except for government sealed coins ( proof set and/or mint set in original government packaging with CoA). I’ve never gotten a bad mint set or proof set!

The saying that "Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it" I believe applies here. As well as to a lot of whats going on in America today but I digress..lol..Becoming educated in any way possible is the learning of history. What Dan is saying here comes from experience and if ignored chasing a "score" youll likely have bad results. Which were unnecessary listening to what Dan said...lol...There are finds to be had on ebay but you gotta learn the warning signs, know the important details, weigh the feedback, etc, or else your only wasting money proving what youve already been told. But again, ANY of these blasted with funky lighting listings are almost a guarantee somethings hidden or being misrepresented. Happy huntin!!! Thanks for the videos Dan!!!
