South Tahoe Refuse (Residential)

  • On the North side of Lake Tahoe, the family-owned Tahoe Truckee Disposal Service collects California customers. On the Nevada side, in Incline Village, Waste Management has a small operation. But around the South end of the lake is another privately-owned sanitation company, called South Tahoe Refuse. STR is known for having a couple of STS front loaders (if you're not sick of all the acronyms by now), along with some Heils but my luck would be seeing the McNeilus Pacific Series that I didn't even know was in their fleet.
    The company with the orange trucks really puts on a great show. My parents relocated to this part of California, making STR their new trash company and allowing me plenty of opportunity to see more of this. From direct observation and what my dad tells me, I can comfortably say that STR provides some of the highest quality service I have ever known. They make full use of having three-man crews on residential front loaders and return containers to the top of everybody's driveway with lid replaced and any litter cleaned up. I'm told that animals interested in garbage + vacation renters don't mix very well, yet these diligent workers readily gather ignorant people's trash that gets spread all around by local wildlife. This hauler encourages residents to set garbage out the morning of collection for that very reason, but some people don't get it.
    Anyways, it's refreshing to see a company that's contracted to haul trash from an entire city still take pride in the smallest parts of the job. Enjoy seeing these guys and their tricks of the trash ;) To me, this video is all about the South Tahoe Refuse employees, because seeing the show they performed made up for an 'everyday' front loader.

    Amazing how efficient collection is when you have a great crew like this. Great coordination and everyone knows there place. High quality service indeed.

    That was awesome watching the driver ditch the Carry can at a house, go grab a dumpster while the rest of the crew continued loading the Carry can, and then the driver just grab the Carry can and continue on. Not a practice seen too often but extremely entertaining. The crew had a pretty good pace about themselves too. Definitely turned a more common truck into a very entertaining vehicle for sure. Hope to see more from these guys over time

    Wow what bloody legends, total champion crew right here - found myself pretty much mesmerised during the whole video watching team and truck in action. A mountain of respect and praise towards these guys for doing what they do and to the company for (presumably) preaching and ensuring such etiquette and high quality. How about that cooperation and mutual understanding about what to do when, who has to do what and how to do what and when! The job seemed to flow so smooth and flawlessly, looks like these guys go efficiently and safely all day long... the boys were even going out of their way to guide the driver, rather than standing around like clueless dickheads as seems to be more common. The way they hand each other the fresh blue bags, one stands in the property, the other tosses the empty bin to them, etc... downright damn fantastic! Can just imagine the new guy in the property getting distracted by the birds flying in the sky and suddenly he's wearing a can over his head lol Top work at 3:08, drops the carry can off to empty the dumpster, one guy guides the driver, other wastes no time and keeps loading, independently carries the cans away too :D Actually pretty jealous watching these guys working together, I always seem to get complete retards to work with or partially competent individuals... can't even rely on guys to unhook the winch coz they're unable to flick the safety clip, or they can't sit a single bin on the lifter, let alone when they surround you with bins or get you pinned up against a wall coz they're observation is absolutely fucked up. Anyway really love the truck too, as common a model as it might be, just looks and sounds good, suits the surroundings. Then the setting itself is something else, love the tall trees and that houses-in-the-forest look, such a quiet, natural and attractive environment. Spotted a proper tamper proof bin at 6:50, haven't seen a screw on lid yet, those animals will evolve and figure things out one day. Can tell it's the kind of location where old mate will go and vetch the morning newspaper... that awkward moment you step outside and come face to face with a grizzly bear digging through the garbage.

      AussieGarbo you're completely right, it's actually worthy of special praise to think that not only is the company asking drivers to be this diligent and safe, but that they're following through. thanks for your comment, I can empathize with trying to work with someone incompetent. you're still even dealing with helpers? especially on containers and winches etc?

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeh that's it, not often you get the company laying out the rules and having all employees follow those procedures and/or standards... seems like a pretty legit operation, definitely respect to the boys and the bosses here. Shame this stuff is not more common. Note it's not my choice having so-called helpers, a lot tend to be counterproductive dead weight that cause me mental fatigue. If I could do the job myself, I bloody would, and how I wish I could. I actually can do the high majority by myself, but it's seen as ideal by management having a 2-man crew instead of a solo operator due to the steel bins/compactors.

    To call them a well oiled machine nearly feels like an injustice. If there's one thing I love about seeing manual crews, it's tossing the bins from the truck. Add in the ditching carry can to service commercial and I'm in. I also can certainly appreciate their system of returning fresh blue bags. Their entire collection system seems to be the epitome of effeciency. They provide top notch service with maximum efficiency and seemingly no wasted movements. The trash can "lockers" certainly add a layer of uniqueness as well. If I remember correctly, traditionally with the blue bag programs residents have to buy rolls at local stores, which can definitely make me appreciate the fact they provide new bags during collection. The commercial stop around the 10:00 mark shows an underrated advantage to running a mixed commercial/resi route for overloaded dumpsters. You can just load them up in the carry can without having to try and reach the dumpster through a pile of bags. Can't wait to find out if their other crews are this skilled ;)

      Thanks for the comment. I would think with the bags, customers have to buy them if it's payt and they're used for trash. kinda an unnecessary burden on the residents if they're only to keep recycling clean/dry. I was very impressed, hopefully you have better luck finding an STS. I am frustrated to admit I did at one point see one with a stowed carry can roll past me on a main road.

    That's cool! I Don't recall ever seeing a three man FL crew. Although labor would run high, these guys sure know how to work efficiently. I haven't seen a resi. FL drop a carry can to empty dumpsters since Eagle was around. Makes sense, especially in mountain/rural areas. Is it weekly service out there? These guys seem like they are used to working together, so I imagine this is the normal crew? Why do some residents have dumpsters as oppose to trash cans? You'd think it would be mandatory to have either all dumpsters or at least trash cans with locking lids so animals aren't as big of a problem. Thanks for catching this.

      thanks for the comment Aaron. would eagle do this with the carry can and mid-route start picking up dumpsters? they do have dedicated commercial routes, but in residential areas there are some apartment complexes oftentimes. so everything is weekly, they just sell you on a larger size dumpster if that's what your apartment needs to get through the week.

      Yep, in fact the area I saw them do that in was Grandview Estates (dirt roads next to stone gate) I also remember them dropping off the carry can in my neighborhood the day before trash day because they would run commercial the afternoon before and just pick up the can the next morning.

    South Lake Tahoe really should switch to carts. They wouldn't even have to get new trucks; just replace the Carry Cans with Curotto Cans and you'd be all set.

    • @Trashman242
      @Trashman242  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they'd need bear-proof automated compatible carts, probably over $100 apiece and not very many options. over $30,000 per curotto plus the costs of modifications to each truck to be compatible. plus education materials for customers on automated collection with bear-proof carts. while they'd save on labor costs, all those expenses and the difficulty of removing the curotto to do dumpsters along the routes are good reasons to stick with status quo for the length of this contract.

    Great video. Very professional workers. I really liked the parts wehn the driver left the bucket at a stop and went back for a dumpster. Do you know how recycling is handled? (Referring to the blue bags?)

    • @milldogg7311
      @milldogg7311 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brian Spencer STR handles all waste and takes it back to their sorting facility/transfer station. All materials are sorted and separated. Blue bags are voluntary. Either way, recycle is separated and only residual is land filled. They also recover bags of yardwaste and wood as well.

    • @Trashman242
      @Trashman242  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brian Spencer the point of the bags is to keep recyclables clean and dry, and prevent residents from becoming complacent about the whole thing. but everything is run through STR's dirty MRF. and thanks!

    Wow these guys are fast! And that Pete has a nice roar! But how does the 3rd guy get transported back to the yard if the truck can only accommodate two people? Did you get a chance to film any Truckee Disposal trucks? I was up in northern Lake Tahoe a couple weeks ago and saw two Peterbilt front loaders driving by.

      @Trashman242  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GarbageSean they might have another truck grab the other helper, but there was a 320 once upon a time that had a small third seat on the doghouse, so this might have had that. I did not film TTDS. thanks for the comment though

    Is it the norm for them to run 3 man on a truck seating 2? The dumpster stops made it look like the driver was newish.

    • @Trashman242
      @Trashman242  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ATSFpony I kind of thought that too but my guess is the driver knew what he was doing, they just are taught to direct him like that. too many low branches and telephone wires all over. also there was a 320 model with a third seat cut into the doghouse, kind of facing the passenger. forgot to look if this one had that
